    Do you play....
Do you play a musical instrument?

I am looking for someone in particular that plays violin. Can you give me an idea on the cost for a 'beginner' violin? Is there such thing as renting a musical instrument as well?

Hey. Yes I play an instrument, two in fact, but neither is the violin. However, I do know that renting instruments, especially orchestra and band instruments, is entirely possible and done regularly by those just starting who aren't sure they want to continue with the chosen form. :) Just looking online or in the yellow pages under instrument rentals should bring up something.

FYI - I play piano and recorder, but my main instrument is my voice. :D

cool, thanks for the tip on looking in the yellow pages. I've tried googling it and go the history of, what it sounds like, local makers, blah blah blah. I never thought to actually open the phone book...man sometimes us and these computers..........

edit: How long have you been playing?

Oh sweet...I opened the yellowpages, found rentals, found someone in an area I know and even passed before, they have violin rentals for $16.00 plus a $4.00 maintence package. How cool! Yeeee I am so excited.

On a personal note, I've been trying to become more scholarly if that's the right word, with the world. Dreaming dreams then making attempts to catch them. I want a fufilling life and to be able to tell my grandchildren, I played violin, or I learned how to crochet, or I can bike so many miles. It's a great feeling guys, to make plans and then even take baby steps towards them. Even if it's just researching something...it feels really good. :c)

FYI is For Your Information. And a recorder is a plastic piccolo type thing. Kinda like a flute but you play it vertically instead of horizontally. Us children in NE Ohio played it in elementray school. Drove our parents crazy......heh heh.

once you get your violin, get some lessons. i started playing violin in 5th grade and played in an orchestra all through high school. the thing that helped the most was private lessons, although i most enjoyed playing in quartets and in regional level orchestras that were more advanced than my school's orchestra too. it's not an easy instrument to learn but once you start picking it up it's a lot of fun.

if you rent for a few months and decide you really like it you should be able to buy a beginner level violin for $200 or so, which i'd highly recommend over renting once you think you are going to stick with it. of course, once you pass the beginner playing level you can start looking at the $10k+ violins... :P

yeah i play trombone- started in 4th grade and i'm a junior in high school now. but the lessons do help the most, i must agree. i'm also taking a beginning strings class right now. we learn to play violin, viola, cello, and bass all in a semester unfortunately. i'm on my last one, cello right now. but my favorite so far has to be the bass. it rocks! do you mind me asking why you want to learn violin?

Heh... he kinda beat me to it, but yes...a recorder is a woodwind that actually ranges from tenor up to sopranino(i.e. piccolo level) and I play soprano. Mine, however, are made of wood not plastic :) Pear and Cherry to be exact.

Oh, and I've been playing recorder for 20 years and piano about 25 years.

I've always found it a pretty instrument and that it made lovely sound. I think I'd like to learn the chello too, but the size of it intimindates me, lol. I know you can get it in different sizes, but... I think I'll try the violin first. I remember as a teenager (which wasn't long ago lol) my mom asking if I could pick one instrument to play what would it be and I had a tie between a flute and a violin. So yeah... :)

I come from a really musical family but somehow the gene passed me right on by. I can't play a note to save my soul and my singing voice has been likened to a cat giving birth in a spinning dyer (and they were being kind!)

Anyone wanna jam with me????

A good IRL friend of mine started playing the violin not too long ago. He took on a rental through a rent-to-own offer at a local music shop. Using a rent-to-own program is great for any instrument.

I play the harp (*points to avatar*), and when I started I rented for several months from a business that offered to apply a percentage of the rental fees to the cost of a purchase if you bought through them. It knocked several hundred dollars off my final bill when I bought! You should check around and see what offers are out there.

I also highly recommend finding a qualified teacher. There are technical aspects to playing an instrument that you will greatly benefit from learning through a professional. Also, having somebody to correct you is invaluable and with a good teacher will help you rapidly grasp and improve on the instrument.

Find a teacher that 'clicks' with you; ask if they offer introductory lessons. If you don't get a good feeling from the teacher (who may otherwise be wonderful, just not the right one for 'you') then try somebody else. Being able to have a strong rapport with your teacher is so important.

Teachers for violins are not usually uncommon, much like piano teachers, and so their prices tend to reflect that in being competitive - well, depending on how many are actually in your general area. Do your research on teachers in your area. Also, sign up for a Violin mailing group or message group - you can find lots of helpful hints from current players.

I hope this helps! Good luck on your journey to music.

I sing, and can play the Piano.

I tried the Flute, Trumpet, Violin, and Clarinet before I gave up and just sang.

    So I sing.

Yes, you can rent instruments, and at a store here, you can get a violin around $1200.

I play clarinet, piano, guitar, flute, trumpet, sax, bass clarinet and contra clarinet. Although the three clarinets are the only ones I can (or could) play more than just simple things. I haven't played anything in about 3-4 years now :'(

Sounds cool, that you want to take up an instrument :) I would definately try oue out before you buy. I played a violin once, and a cello (the same day) and Wow, it was challenging to me, being someone who had never touched one before! My friend plays violin.. her husband is getting her an electric one.. I will run it by him and see about them price-wise.
I play guitar off and on. I took lessons and can read sheet music, but I really just like to sit and jam with a few people, some drinks, and a campfire. I definately want to get another electric.. my husband plays awesomely, and was in a Slayer cover band for awhile.
Jackson guitars are awesome. Mark had one for awhile and I had a nice 2002 Les Paul but we had to sell both when we needed to buy a truck. We both regretted it (don't even have the POS truck anymore!) Jacksons are a staple for many metal players who like something with fast frets. Les Pauls are heeeeavy!
