What a waste!!
Woke up this morning and went outside. My girlfriends new jeep liberty was majorly trashed. For about 3 blocks apparently some kids took large rocks and everything they could get their hands on and trashed several vehicles. We had to have it towed and go thru all the hassle with police, insurance and car rental.:taz:
I can't stand the way most kids are allowed to run the streets these days. I brought mine up telling them, "I brought you into this world and I can take you out". Never would have followed thru with it, but respect for the property of others was well ingrained. I hate living in the city and have less use for a large part of society as time goes on.
What ever happened to kindness and respect? I know there were bad people before, but let's face it, it is scary when people look at you funny for saying thank you or holding the door for a stranger. I actually had a woman yell at me for holding a door open. Told me she could get it herself!!

Re: What a waste!!
Last winter my dad went to warm his car up for work early in the morning and found somebody had tossed a brick through the windshield. There have been cars vandalized on our street before, but it was an extra low blow because it was Christmas for gods sake!
We know from neighbours that there is a group of kids who don't even live around our area who wander the streets late at night. When I say 'kids' I mean 10-14ish. Where are their parents? I live in a pretty good neighborhood too - not that you'd know it with the response time of police. With the taxes we pay you'd think they could at least round up a group of pubescent hooligans.
You need a license to have a dog, but anybody can have a baby. Its scary.
I'm sorry to hear about the damage that was done. Hopefully the lil'punks will get caught and you will recover some of the loss.

Re: What a waste!!
I've done some stupid things as a kid that really got me in some deep doo....but nothing that would ever cause literally THOUSANDS of dollars worth of damage. It's just stupid. I hope they catch these jerks.

At least you got a response, we call them, they tell us they will take a report over the phone. We were supposed to wait for them to call back. as far as I know , they haven't !?

Yeah, sounds crazy. Some of the cars were damaged more than ours. I'm not really violent, but it is better for them that I didn't catch them in the act. Better the police catch them.:rage:

Re: What a waste!!
Sorry about what happened to you and your girlfriend...i agree people's morals get lower with every generation in my opinion, I'm 19 a sophmore in college and there are some kids that i wonder how their parents must be if that's the way they act. Kids are drinking at a younger age, smoking pot at a younger age...i feel like kids/teenagers are given an inch and they take a mile and parents don't really do anything about it...when i lived in Mexico and even when i moved here if i did something wrong i would get a spanking...not like bruising and all that but i feel that that's part of the reason i am how i am, all parents do now is just put their kids in time out and take away their toys...there's a differecne between child abuse and discipline, it doesn't make you a bad person if you want to discipline your child. Rant over.

Re: What a waste!!
That really sucks man. Hopefully they get caught and a judge doesn't go too lightly on them. I see you're in Rockford. When I lived in Westmont a family moved into an apartment across the street from me from the Westside projects. They were evicted after 3 weeks, but in that time, they and their friends slashed tires, robbed and vandalized 73 cars on my block, and pretty much just f*ed things up every night while they lived there. They even poured Muriatic acid all over a bunch of cars and put a corvette on blocks and stole the wheels. For one apartment, I swear there were at least 15 kids from a few months - 21 years old staying there, and about 10-15 tweens hanging out front every night. I think we need to start looking to Singapore when it comes to punishing vandals, punks and thugs like this. On NYE when I was 19 we caught a few guys slashing my friend's tires. They were driving a new Monte Carlo themselves. Let's just say they and their whip didn't make it home safely. :O

Re: What a waste!!
The best was when my brother-in-law on the Southside caught a group of gangbangers spray painting Latin King graffiti on his fence. He went out and threatened them, then told them to come back that Saturday to paint over it, or he'd go to where they hangout and kill them. They all showed up and painted his whole fence and washed my sister's car.

Re: What a waste!!
Oh man what a total bummer.
You are right, kids (as well as some adults) have no respect anymore.
No one teaches their kids consequences anymore, even the courts give them a slap on the wrist.
I did things when I was a teenager that my mom would have reemed me for, but I never disrespected someone else, or their property.
I will tell ya, if I EVER catch my kids or find out that they have done something like that. They better hope the cops catch them first... thats what my grandfather used to say to me. He'd also say, it wouldn't be wise to call me from jail. You will sit there and think about what you did.
Kids just aren't held accountable for their actions anymore.

Re: What a waste!!
I blame the parents who are so afraid of their children and I blame society for allowing children the weapon of calling Deyfus or other child services. dont get me wrong, child services has its place in our societ, but when children know that they can wield it as a weapon against their parents that just sends a red flag up in my head. My 10 year old has received the "I brought in I'll take you out" speech.. and in public too. I've gotten looks but so far no one has made a comment to me. As far as Im concerned it was good enough for me, its good enough for my kids. all those violent video games and tv shows out there that kids can watch doesn't help them either. as a society we've become desensitiized to violent actions in general. and thats a shame. okay, I've ranted enough. sorry about your gf's car and hope you get some justice done in your favor.

Re: What a waste!!
The problem is parents have had their recourse removed. When you messed up as a kid what was your biggest fear? DADS BELT. Over the last generation parents and kids have been told that punishment is not excitable. As a side effect of that kids have figured out that if mom and dad won't "Really Punish" me and the law won't touch me till I'm 18 where is my incentive to not bust that car up, or shoot paint balls out car windows. The big thing here is for kids to drop 30lbs concrete blocks off over passes late at night as car drive under them.
Saw a news story this morning; 15 year old kid steal a 55,000.00 car and leads police on a 45 minute high speed chase. When he wrecks the car he jumps out and runs. As he is running away he turns and "Fires 9 shots at police" critically wounding one officer and was shot and killer by the other. Now heres the kicker. he mom is on T.V crying at the loss of her child (as she should be). Her response to the incident "Had the police not been chasing him he wouldn't have gotten scared and felt like he needed to defend himself against them. Thats why he shot at them cause he was scared and felt threatened"
Threatened my ASS.
When we as a society refuse to punish for actions like this we may as well pass out the bricks ourselves. We have been told that punishment and failure as children may cause low self esteem and cause further problems later in life. Ok fine we tried that and not having it cause problems sooner in life.
Should parents be held responsible? Why would you blame the parent for their children's actions but not let them respond to those actions in a disciplinary manner. It would be like putting a double arm amputee in the boxing ring with Sugar Ray and then scratching your head when he gets his ass beat.

I completely agree, and I hate hearing stories like this. It's really sad that they are pretty common place these days. Bring back the belt! I think parents should be held responsible to a point, with a minimum of parenting classes. I got the belt, but if I didn't, I'm sure I would have after my parents returned home from a mandatory parenting class they had to sit through because I was a jerk.

Re: What a waste!!
Some kids these days, spared from being spanked, belted, and the like, are never taught that there are consequences to their bad behavior, and that those consequences are undesirable. Take this IDIOT on a show I watched recently, about real-life situations in prison (san Quentin.) The genius was about to be released after completing his sentence, and they asked him "would he be back?" LOL.. he said... "I don't know."
Any human with half of a brain cell, after wasting away in jail for 5 years like he did, would stop and assess things. Why am I doing these things that'll land me in a place where my very freedom, loved ones, are taken away? Greed.. stemming from being a kid who always got what it wanted.. I guess.
I have an acquaintence, and I swear her kid will be the next Jeffrey Dahmer. The kid gets away with murder.. he will openly defy his mom at a store, say; he'll do bad things to get glee frmo being yelled at! This I am sure is being acted out in many households in America.. it puts fear into my heart knowing that these kids will one day be adults with cars, money, and access to drugs (if not already!)
I know a man who was imprisoned for 10 years for bank robbery. He had a Heeellluva time making honest money at any job when he got out.. big deal. He formed his own business and is now doing much better than the average joe. Some people can learn from our penal system I guess.. others might as well be locked up for life.
Are people de-evolving in intelligence though? To readily admit that they might go back to prison after having wasted years of their only life in there?!!?!

Re: What a waste!!
Yeah, I understand the parents suffer from DFS pressure. I will not back down from spanking my kids or grandkids. Abuse is a totally different story. Many parents need to get a backbone or stop having kids. Why have kids if you can't stand up for whats right?
We rented Kelly a car from Enterprise. The key would not come out of the ignition and the locks didn't work. They told her she would have to take it to the garage and have it fixed!!! They had no cars available. Can you believe that????:rage::rage::rage:
She's driving my truck now. I went down and insisted on a refund for her. Maybe they should read their own policies on roadside assitance!!!!!:O They gaurantee a replacement car if that one doesn't work. But heaven forbid if you bring it back with a one inch scuff mark!! You will pay!!:taz:
-
Re: What a waste!!
Argh. Not only the whole thing that happened.. now they're giving you grief about a rental car! I swear, when it rains, it pours. I am glad that you stuck up for her and demanded a refund. What an insane world this is sometimes..
I had my share of punishments as a kid! My grandma swatted me with a coathanger once.. looking back, I completely deserved it. It was simple.. do something bad, you will get caught, and you will regret it. These days it's let's do whatever we want for so many kids..

Re: What a waste!!
Neither I nor my sister were ever spanked, and certainly never belted. We did have a ‘time out’ chair that worked pretty well, even though I had fantasies of chopping it into firewood when I missed part of Care Bears. However, my parents were far from lax in their parenting. I saw my first ‘horror’ movie (“Pet Cemetery,” although I could only finish half of it) at the age of 12, and junk-food was a no-no.
In contrast, I knew a boy who was punished with spanking whenever he’d do something wrong, and he is currently unable to return to the country due to outstanding warrants. His parents were also quite good folks, and I don’t fault them for spanking him if they felt that was what he needed to lean,* but clearly somewhere along the way he didn’t.
People are individuals and while I think we should definitely be asking the parents where they were at the time, the kids should be held just as accountable. Any good parents out there with a troubled teen can tell you that even when you bend over backwards to help, they can still go off and make the wrong choices. “You can lead a horse to water…” and all that, I guess.
* I believe parents should be able to raise their children as they see fit, including spanking, within reason. Obviously outright abuse shouldn’t be acceptable, but I understand that is not what we are talking about.

Great point. Not all kids learn from spanking. Even the best intentions raising a child backfires. Yet, as I watch peoples children scream and cuss them, out running all hours of the night, I have to think it's because for most cases, the parents have lost touch with who is supposed to run the household. In most bad cases they had coddled the child too much creating a self centered little monster with no regard for others. Kudos to the parent that can raise a good child without being physical. :gj:

Ha thats funny. I haven't yelled at anyone yet but sometimes it does annoy me when people hold the door. In a situation where you aren't close yet and you almost feel like you have to hurry your pace possibly even throw in a jog because someone is waiting on you holding the door for you. but if I am right behind the person of course the door hold is nice but I always have my hand out.
As for city's being the problem I grew up in a town of less than 10,000 and its just as bad if not worse than the city of 650,000 I live in now.
