Urgent Plz Help!!!!
my buddy has a leopard gecko that has been sick due to not eating and is unbelievably thin lately and he has no food so i took him here to try and feed him, but nothing is happening really, all there is for food for him is dead dried out flies, im just wandering if theres anything that might be around the house i could try and feed him:(

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
why dont you run up to the local pet store and get some crickets or meal worms!!! why isnt this person feeding his (or her) animal?!
-
Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
we have no ride to get over to a petstore, car is uninspected, and they are only 10 yrs old and doesnt know what hes doing, do you know anything we can do to save this animal

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
Animals need food to live...I suggest you buy it some proper food.
Crickets, mealworms, cockroaches....something...otherwise it will probably starve to death.

Leos like their food to be alive and moving...its not going to eat dried flies... Pick up some crickets...make sure they are gutloaded and then fed off.

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
Do you know what the temp in the cage is? Could the animal be impacted? (Sand bottom of cage)? Temp and humidity are big ones for leo's. You may have to try some treats such as wax worms and such to stimulate feeding even though they are not as good for the gecko. Can you give some more info?:snake:
P.S. I remember something about feeding leo's fruit baby food but let me check before doing that!

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
If the leo won't eat on its own, I would first take it to a vet and get it check out for internal parasites.
Second, if it still won't eat...what I have done in the past with rescue leos was to make a slurry of crickets, mealworms, superworms with pedialyte and literally syringe feed the leos. After a few feedings I found that they would take right to the syringe without issue.

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
leos will sometimes take turkey flavored baby food--i would recommend this over fruit because it has high protein content which leos need. i have used turkey baby food with mashed mealworms and waxworms in it to handfeed before--after a few days the leo started licking it from a dish of the mix left in its enclosure. once strong enough to start hunting for food i started feed live insects.
i'd recommend a trip to the vet as suggested to check for parasites and possibly impaction if the leo was kept on loose substrate.
leos need a warm side of about 88-90 degrees and a cool side of about 78 degrees. you should have a cool side and a warm side hide--the warm hide should also be a humid hide to help with shedding. a dish of water and a dish of calcium should be kept in the enclosure at all times. you can also keep a dish of mealworms in the enclosure for him to eat from as he wants once he starts eating insects again, supplementing with crickets, phoenix worms, feeder roaches, etc. every few days.

the thing is with that, the person i got it from wasnt taking care of this gecko at all i get to his house the heat lamp is dead and all the food is dried up so i brg him here to try and save this gecko's life but i dont have an extra heat lamp or gecko food (only collecting snakes right now) so yes i know i was unprepared to take this animal but better me then him at this point

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
go outside and find some rollypollys.(the black bugs that turn into little balss when you touch them and move really slow.) i feed those to my frog sometimes. try that. it mite work with a leapard geco. you can also go look for other things that seem edable outside for him. crickets and pill bugs are your best bet.(pill bugs rollypollys) hope this helps.

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
i wouldn't necessarily recommend feeding bugs you catch outside unless you are positive that they haven't come in contact with any sort of pesticide or fertilizer. you are better off just going to petsmart and picking up some crickets and a cup of mealworms.
you can use flexwatt or a uth for the leo the same way that you do for your snakes, you just need to set the thermostat for 88-90 for the leo. belly heat is better for them than heat from a lamp anyhow. if you can't get him set up with heat immediately try to keep him in a warmer part of the house (but quarantined away from your other animals) until you can.

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
If you have no transportation you could use a regular light bulb to provide heat. You don't need a special bulb.If he has not had a heat source, that is certainly part of the reason that he is not eating. Secondly a hide is just as important to make sure that he isn't too stressed out to eat.You can use a toilet paper or paper towel roll if you have nothing else to use as a hide. If you provide him correct temperature and a place to hide it will take a couple of days before he will begin eating. This will give you time to come up with crickets or mealworms from somewhere.I am presuming that he is not impacted but if he is, providing warmth will help that too.As soon as you are able get some calcium powder and put it in his enclosure. But heat and a hide are the first things to provide. Without these you dont stand any chance of saving him.

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
My leo stopped eating for about a month after I moved from WA to MT, I'm guessing he was stressed. I tried everything finally after about a month he FINALLY ate wax worms! I would try them. I fed a metric butt ton. He lost so much weight in his tail I was getting scared. But now he is back to being a fat happy leo!:gj:

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
hmm, a metric butt ton...i can't find the conversion for that into grams. :P :D

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
It's about 12 wax worms. Or until he stops eating whichever comes first. :D:rolleye2:

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
Seanmcginnin - How is it going for the leo? Is he improving? Getting worse? Still the same? What's new?

Re: Urgent Plz Help!!!!
Well that's a shame. It looks like it was already too late at the time that you became involved.
