why did YOU get a morph?
I have wanted a spider for sometime.. have even been facinated with a few other morphs and in April we will have the extra money to get at least one morph of my choice (not like a pie bald but something nice) my husband is always looking for the money aspect in everything. April I will be able to finally get a morph of my choice. ((insert happy dance))

For me I want a morph for me. I like the look, enjoy having something that isnt as popular, exc. My husband wants a morph only when it comes time to breed (he understands needing to raise up a female or getting a young male but needing something to breed to, thus the hatchling female for now) His mind thought is needing a morph only to breed.. otherwise why bother. Do most people get their morphs to breed them strictly or more for a pleasure aspect?

I'm right in the middle on that question.

In a sense, I am completely and totally in love with the snake itself and how it looks, their personalities, etc.

But then again, I love the thought of producing my own kick ace snakes!

Re: why did YOU get a morph?
Well, I don't have one and probably never will... but if I ever could get a BP morph it would be for the pleasure of owning, seeing, and handling a beautiful animal. My current favorite morphs are some of the most expensive: Pewter, Bumblebee, and Super pastel.

Oh...that's right, I DO have morphs: Corn snake morphs. :) Though they probably don't count, I can say that I got them because they're beautiful, dutiful eaters, over a year old, and in the case of my ghost very sweet and docile.

Just remember, no matter what the looks of the animal, what counts is that you have a great relationship with them.

Re: why did YOU get a morph?
Just out of curiosity, how would getting a morph be different than the two normals that you had?

But to answer your question, when I finally decide upon the morph that I want to get first (they are all so beautiful) it would be because a particular snake has caught my eye and to add a little variety to my collection. For me it would be more for the pleasure of having a morph, than for the breeding of them. If I end up with all normal looking BPs in the end (as I do have one poss. het albino), that would be fine with me too. They are all beautiful in my book, normal or any of the morphs. :):)

I think people get them for both reasons. I got my first morph for breeding, but also for having a beautiful snake. If you are thinking about getting a morph, think about what your goal is first. Then work from there. Thats what I did. Right now I want to make super pastels. Then Bee's, meaning I need a spider :P.
Either way, I hope you find something that both you and your husband will enjoy!
    Good luck!

Re: why did YOU get a morph?
I plan on breeding the morphs that I absolutely love, not at all for the $$ aspect of it. If you're just breeding for a quick buck, I personally believe that you're in the wrong hobby, and are pretty close to being on the same level as puppy mills.
Really this kind of thing applies to all animals for me. If you're going to breed any animal, breed them responsibly, provide them with the best environment while they are under your care, and take the time to learn who you are selling the animals to so you can make sure that they are going to have a good life. Don't just pawn them off for a quick buck. *walks away from soap box*

    edit-

I am in no way directing this toward any member here, just posting my personal point of view. I'm sure that all of us 'regulars' provide all of our animals with the best captive care possible :gj:

Re: why did YOU get a morph?
Someone wise once told me "The fastest way to make a million dollars in the snake business is start with 2 million and work your way down".

I love many of the ball morphs. I have lusted after bumblebee balls since I first saw one. I came to the conclusion way back then that I would eventually have one, no matter what it took.

This year I bought my first bumblebee.

So yeah... don't get me wrong... I intend to breed her, but I firmly believe that bumblebees are about as good as it gets in herpetaculture.

So to answer your question... is it the love or the money? Yes.

just to put it on the table.. im not intending to breed, know nothing about it, not in it for the "money" i was just asking :gj: everyones point of view on the subject.. i understand most people have their critters as pets before profit...thats definetly what it is here

Re: why did YOU get a morph?
Pets before profits always... Buuuut with that said it never hurts to be able to make profit on your pets... I got my first morph like many others to make bumble bees... When I first got into BP's last yr I saw a bumble bee and was like hot diggidy dog that snake is sweeeeeet looking!!! saw the price tag and went hot diggidy dog thas a lotta mooolaaaa!!... Picked up a female spider and male pastel and hopfully next yr when i breed them I get my bumble bee... Although my first goal was a bumble bee... now that ive been exposed to this crack like habit called BP's my goals have expanded :)

I buy morphs because this hobby is as addicting as pokemon to 3rd graders. I gotta have em all! I buy hets so I can hatch those beautiful pastel orange ghost bees. That's why I buy morphs, for the living art and having a complete collection. :D

Yes, what is the difference? I remember now you gave them away because you didnt want to feed live rats. Have you decided to go with F/T or Mice? It's great to hear your getting back into Bp's. :)

The first time I saw an albino ball I had to have one. I started out buying a pair of hets, planning to breed them to get my albino, but I couldn't wait so I bought an albino outright. The first time I saw a spider I had to have one, so I saved and bought one. The first time I saw... well you get the idea. I have always been into ball pythons as pets, but I'm breeding to produce combos and to holdback offspring that look even nicer than their parents. I also like my hobbies to make some kind of return so I can buy better supplies, paints, snakes or whatever, without going broke.

I am also in the middle of the question. I love the snake for itself and enjoy having it. But I also want to produce some really nice snakes with the morphs I get. Next on the list. Spider!

i have the morphs that i do because:
    1. i love the way they look
    2. i could afford to buy or trade for them
    3. i want to make more of them or use them to make something else

at this point, i can't justify buying a snake if i don't love the way it looks, even if i can use it to make something i do like. i guess the exception is hets--for example, i bought a male het pied so i could work on producing pieds--but i did still choose a snake who's looks i really liked.

My thoughts exactly. I love many different morphs, but am not in a financial position to shell out for pieds, bees, etc. I am fond of Pastels, and I really love Spiders. Honestly I would probably not be into Pastels if they were not an ingredient to producing bees, which I am in love with. But I also love the way my Pas male looks; like others said, he was the snake I "had to have" and even when my racks are full of pieds and bees, he will still be here :) Unless I choose to include him in "trading up" dollar-wise for different morphs. This is the fun part of this hobby. Sure, you can produce, buy and sell morphs without ever doing a trade or even seeing your business partners in the flesh. But the fun part comes when you find someone on a local level (or who is willing to travel!) who you can enjoy the hobby with and strike up a trade; awesome stuff!
My Spider was a double bonus. He has awesome looks (in my humble opinion) was within my $ budget, and is one of "those" morphs that I love. Yay! But like Mlededee said, I could not keep a snake around whose looks and general being did not impress me. I have a normal-as-is striped male (see avatar) that might never prove to be genetic, but I love him as a snake.

I have to agree with Emily on this one she pretty much summed up my feeling's. I'm looking forward to trading some bp's at the end of this season and acquiring morph's I don't have in my collection. I wanna make some bad arse ball's for me.;)

Re: why did YOU get a morph?
When I first got bps, I actually didn't much care for the morphs... I know... seems odd now.

But the more snakes I looked at, the more I appreciated the variety. It became an extension of liking normals with lots of blushing, burgundy hues, or heavy etchings.

Then I saw a pied... then a LA Pied... then it was all downhill. I remember seeing snakes that absolutely took my breath away. Ebonies, Ivories... etc. Wanting them, but not being able to afford them.

Buying morphs was the first step to producing my own combinations. But admittedly I had to be pragmatic and start small. Buy the "ingredients" that would produce the morphs, and also fund the future acquisitions.

Yet at the same time, as another poster noted, I have two het ghosts that even after I produce the ghosts that I want (and variations thereof) I can't imagine will be going anywhere.

    Bruce

But on another note. I love BCIs, and have plans of investing in a morph purely as a pet, with no intentions of breeding.
