At a loss...
Doing my weekend check on everyone today and refilling water dishes I came across one of my female possible het pieds lifeless and obviously dead....:(
I really didn't see this coming, I know a lot of us who keep live animals will at some time or another experience a loss, but this girl just days ago was lively when I had her out and looked physically healthy and plump.
She had fed for me five times on hopper mice, I had caught her drinking on several occasions so I know she was intaking water, and she was passing urates and waste...
From examining her I only noticed a small disproportion to her shape, there was a small lump to one side of her body in the abdomen area. The tissue looked dark and discolored....
I guess I really just wanted to share my loss... she was a little smoking sweety of a snake... all I know is I'm VERY disheartened...:tears:

Re: At a loss...
wow what a bummer man that's pretty bad :( Sorry to hear about this. Hopefully you'll take it in to a vet and see what the cause was?

I will probably try to get her into the vet for a necrospy, unfortunately the vet is closed today and tomorrow so we will see.
I'm thinking it was an internal rupture of some kind because of the dark tissue (blood filled?)...but I don't know. Hopefully my herp vet is still there, I haven't had to use her in well over a year.

Re: At a loss...
So sorry to hear that , Jason... I experienced a loss just a couple days ago... it was a snake I knew was ill when I brought it home, but it seemed to be doing so well, and I had just started treatments... I was really taken aback to see it had died. I hope you find out what went wrong, and very sorry for your loss.

Thanks Justin. It was a thing I knew could happen, just didn't expect it to. I'll be watching all of her sisters like a hawk.

I appreciate it Charlie, she was one of my favorites of the group, really nice het markers, but even more...awesome temperment.
I appreciate all of the support guys/gals.

Re: At a loss...
Oh Jason, I'm so very sorry to read of her loss. It's never easy to hold them and know there was nothing you likely could have done...so frustrating and very heartbreaking to say the least. Mike and I have had two babies die in our hands and with them, there was never much hope, but you hope anyways and wish it could have been different. One of them (Teagan) had that dark discoloration you mention and from what I could find out it was likely some sort of liver failure with her.
I know you care and this hurts but don't let what's happened hold you down. Even in these hard situations, I think we as keepers of snakes, do learn something to take forward into another day.

Sorry to hear about your loss J it's worst when your not expecting something like that. I hope the necropsy shed's some light on why it happened.

Sorry about your loss. It's bad to deal with, especially when it wasn't expected.

I hope I can take something from even this experience. I appreciate the thoughtful response Jo! Keeping animals sure can be trying sometimes.
Was the cause of the liver failure found? If the vet says the same thing I'd definitely be curious to see if/how it can be prevented...

Re: At a loss...
Sorry to hear that Jason, It happens and it's never fun. I just lost one a couple of days ago too. She was fine last week, then I found her dead on Friday. Anyone who keeps a lot of animals is going to have unexplained losses from time to time. BTW, the dark discoloration is probably the gall bladder, that seems to decompose rather quickly and I've often seen it on animals that have been dead for more then a few hours. But if thats the case, it's probably not the cause of death, just a natural byproduct of decomposition.

Its too bad that living things that we cherish at some point succumb to death, she had big plans ahead of her. I was going to call you this morning, to see if you'd have insight...but I just couldn't deal with it at the time. *sigh*
It means a lot to me bro. (NH)

Mark, thank you for the insight, and I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I checked in on her, and actually held her saturday around 6pm and all seemed well.
I found her this morning at around 9am so I'm not sure if the decomposition would set in that quickly, but I check the anatomy via VPI book, and the dark area was in the gall bladder region so I think you may be right on. Hopefully she's not too for decomposed for a successful necropsy.
Thank you again everyone

Jason, I think in Teagan's case it was Mike and I simply being stupid. We purchased her from an unknown at Taylor. I now believe she was likely captive hatched and simply had not been hydrated properly or even started at all after shipping in. We very stupidly fell in love with this young snake and didn't make the correct inquiries about the seller or ask enough questions.
It is my understanding that liver failure can occur with these babies if they aren't dealt with correctly after importation. If Teagan was the import I suspect she actually was, then a lot of the issues with this particular baby snake make more sense now. At the time it was just sad and awful.

Sorry about your loss J! You become attached to these animals, and it's very hard when these things happen.....keep your head up bro, you couldn't prevent this one, and it's not your fault!

Thanks for the input. This girl came with a group from a good breeder, my guess is that it was a random death. Hopefully I can find something else out.
