petsmart feeder problems
so ive had my bp almost 3 weeks now. i live in a relativly small town with only one petshop, petsmart. i just bout my 3rd mouse from them today and th girl there was starting to give me all these wierd looks and asking if 'these mice were for pets?' and thn th employees were all group-heddling and wispering and pointing at me etc while i was checking out. all the employees there are that female 'oochie-coochie' pet people, not to be sterio typical.
is ther any chance they would stop selling to me?is there an official petsmart policy against buying live mice as feeders?

Oh yeah! I work at a Petsmart in Montana. And yes, we are not allowed to sell mice as feeders. Heck, we can't even sell guppies as feeders! It's frozen or nothing!
I hate that crap. But what can you do. I would recommend buying frozen. They can and will deny you live mice. They can't ban you from the store. We have an Asian man who comes in and tries to buy koi to eat. We let him in, but we won't sell him anything.
That sucks that's the only place you can get feeders from. If I was in charge I would allow the selling of live feeders.

Re: petsmart feeder problems
do they sell frozen then?? that really sucks! im in college right now (ithaca NY) anyone know anyother places locally to buy live mic or rats?? he snaps them up like a champ in like 15 seconds after putting them in so i really dont want to change. and i really dont want to spend like 60 bucks for frozen mice online, hell thats more then the snake itself cost! not to mention storing them will be a huge hassle for me in my situation. and watching him 'hunt' is just so damn cool!
back home, rochester ny, they have a petco with littrally 100 mice in a cage. i was buying my tank supplies there and they guy in front of me was buying a guinea pig and knew the exact ammount it cost without being rung up, the casheer was impressed and he nonchalantly said, "ya i buy one every week, only thing my snake will eat" and they didnt even bat an eye at him.

Re: petsmart feeder problems
yeah, petco don't give a damn. I wish petsmart was like that sometimes. I disagree with a lot of their policies, but hey, I get a 15% discount and I get to talk to people about animals all day!

Re: petsmart feeder problems
Yea Petsmart is weird like that. When I went in to purchase a male mouse to use as a breeder, my friend kept telling me it was so mean to kill off his to be babies. I actually had to sign a paper saying I would not mistreat the animal (that included feeding him to a snake) and everything. I told her I would take good care of the male, but his babies were another story. :) Its crazy. I wish we could bring up a point about live foods. They sell live crickets and pre-packaged dead crickets so what is the difference in selling live mice as feeders . Is it because they are mammal? Arg! Good luck with finding the live mice you need. Its hard here too believe it or not. We have Petco (far drive), Petsmart (no live feeders), Off the Ark (long drive) and the new petstore that I can't remember thier name (bad store).

Yeah, we also sell gold fish as feeder fish. It's lame. I wish we could sell live feeders. Fortunately I have a few options, but it sucks for people who only have a petsmart as an option.

Re: petsmart feeder problems
Yep, this is something I never understood myself when I worked at Petsmart. They treat their animals lousy and cram way too many into a single enclosure...yet they refuse to sell any mammal as feeders or even breeders! They have 'pet contracts' that customers have to sign stating they won't mistreat the animal...which is rather pointless. I had no problem selling rodents to people I knew were using them for breeders or snake food, and I just warned them not to come in to any one store too often to do that. If they wanted to spend that much (mice are $5 a piece, rats $10) on feeders I wasn't about to refuse. However, I seemed to be an exception.
Good luck.

I live in a smalll town we have two small pet stores.. One is a group of 18 year old girls who are selling hoppers mice as full grown $3 each.. The other is a family owned pet been open for years they take care of their animals for the most part well. Both want $6 dollars for small rat.. I checked the notice board on the walls and found a local girl who breeds them for herself and her bother both have multisnakes.. She cost me 1 per large full grown mouse.. i got lucky..:)

Re: petsmart feeder problems
You don't have to tell them your feeding them off. And if they ask you next time, get all disgusted and ask to speak to a manager, then give the manager hell. (Have a good reason why you continue to buy mice of course) That's what I would do, what are they gonna do? Stop selling to you? Eh, whatever I say.

I’m not sure about that one. Rats used in Universities often come from one department to another, and you don’t know what they or their parents have been through. A good friend of mine is finishing a PhD in Genetics, and the rats they experiment on are often engineered with all types of ‘quirks’ to assist in testing and experiments.
While measures exist to protect against such animals getting into the general populous, I’d not flirt with chance. Accidents do happen, and I’m sure the last thing you’d want is for your snake to pay the price.
(Although, if comic books have taught me anything, it is that a slim chance might exist for Mr. Snake to develop mutations and super-powers after eating such a rat. Hmm….)
In any event, why not buy through an online frozen-feeder store and have them delivered to your door? (That's what I plan to do, since somebody I live with has allergies to furry animals, so breeding my own/keeping live ones is not an option.)
