Right now I got my ball in a storage bin that is semi see though with u.t.h. underneath with 2 identical hides. If I use a total dark tub is hides required ?

Mine are in tubs on my rack...

The big ones do not have hides but will use their paper to go under and hide sometimes...The young ones have hides but tend to use the paper more.

It really depends on your bp.

If he uses it...keep it in. If not...take it out.

All my racks are black.... so the tubs are like a hide inside the rack, I don't use hides at all. None of my bps have hides.

My rack is black so the only light coming in is from the front. I do not use hides since it stays pretty dark in there. My male normal tends to use the newspaper as a hide.

Actually come to think of it, my corn snake who is in a clear glass tank hardly uses her hides. She likes being under the newspaper more.

We offer hides in some of the big tubs that aren't in racks. If the snake wants to use it, it's there. For the snakes in tubs in the black rack, we don't offer hides as basically the rack acts as one huge hide.

I have black racks and almost all of my ball pythons still love their hides. I've taken hides out of the tubs that have breeding pairs in them, but everyone else who wants a hide gets a hide.

I keep hides in the tubs of my smaller snakes, and not in the adults' tubs. I have 41-quart tubs in my rack, and the hidespots in the smaller (8-1000 gram) snakes' tubs, helps to make it more cozy for the smaller snakes. The big snakes just move them around and they make it cramped.

I offer all of my snakes hides .... some use them, some don't, some use them sometimes.

    Hope this helps.

A hide doesn't have to be elaborate. I used crumpled up newspaper on top of the substrate (keeps them from burrowing under their newspaper substrate)

funny that you say this.........i have one girl that i tried this with because she hates hides, and loves hanging out under her paper. i thought i was smart and balled up paper towels for her to hide under/or around, and it didn't work, she still got under the paper and left a nice LOG for me that was stuck to the tub!
