I prefer nikon... But thats just it, a preference. My new camera plans have gone to the wayside so I haven't been researching as much anymore, but Nikon has always had great reviews.

I'm buying from B&H, and this package here looks to be cheaper than what you listed, and has the same lens as well as a 2 gb sandisk card

edit: Also, if you're going for more professional photography for your snakes, then I would take this approach....well.....it's the approach i AM taking :D

    I'm buying a D40, rather than a D40x. The big difference is the D40 is 6megapixel and d40X is 10.1.

Megapixel really isn't THAT important. I've seen some REALLY good D40 pictures, and that's why i'm going with it.

The regular D40 is cheaper than the D40x, which gives me a little extra cash to spend on a good flash...Lighting is everything ;)

    Here's my wishlist:

I prefer Canon. I currently have a Canon DRebel XT that I adore. I have friends with Nikons but they don't seem nearly as 'user friendly' as Canons.

I have heard Canons accesories are alot better. But I'm looking at the Nikon D200 right now.

I have the Nikon D40x...I couldn't be happier with it. The ease of use and it is realitively small for an SLR camera are my 2 favorite features.

If this were 3 years ago I'd say go with the Canon without even having to think about it. But, it's not 3 years ago anymore. ;) Canon use to be the king of the Digital SLR world, but everyone is catching up, unless you are interested in higher end D-SLR's like the EOS-1Ds Mark III.

Just go with what camera offers the features you like or want and which can provide quality accessories at the right price. Either the Nikon or Canon will be a great camera.
