i got my husky puppy!! (DUW)
i got him yesterday and i got to meet his mom and other brothers and sisters and i picked this one out because he seemed the one to come to me the most so this is the one that i took home with me. my famil and i are still debating what to name him, and so so far i like the name "Cerberus".

    OMG I WANT:D

He is adorable, I love him.

A few words of advice on Huskey's. Leash and obedience train him NOW. Start right now, and always be consistant. Especially with the leash. THey are built and born to pull and work, trust me I learned that the hard way.

Beautiful pup, he will make an awesome friend for you and your family.

THAT i know. i was training him on the leash to follow and listen to me. he did ok, not that i expected him to listen to every command.

I love Huskies! (dang you all for getting puppies - makes me want another one!) My sister probably doesn't share that same love since the one we had as kids chomped down on her neck. So I'm Kristy, make sure to get that baby socialized and obedience down pat.

    One word: Halti

Harnesses and Huskies do not mix. There's no control when using a harness.

Re: i got my husky puppy!! (DUW)
I love using a halti with my dogs. (Even though I have heard that some dogs trainers think of it as the easy way out and your not really training your dog...???) But I do agree with not using a harness. They are only good, IMO, if you are going to train your dog to do some pulling later on...

Very cute puppy though!!! :) Makes me want another puppy too!!

He is BEAUTIFUL!!! And yes, everyone is right- your going to have to do alot of trianing. But as long as he knows who the "dominant" one is, training wont be too hard for you. Congrats, and good luck!!!

Re: i got my husky puppy!! (DUW)
I'd agree on the harness thing with Huskies. Since their instinct is to pull, harnesses tend to just trigger that so aren't always a good choice for walking control. A Halti style or even a classic training collar might be your better choice. When the pup is a bit bigger though a proper pulling harness where he can pull a cart/small sled for you is a great idea. These dogs love to pull so it fulfills that need. Watch the pup for climbing fences and don't let him off lead where you can't get him back. Huskies (and all northern breeds) tend to be runners and are hard to confine to any yard as they are very agile climbers. They are also "talkers" LOL.

We had a lab/husky mix years ago. Shad loved to wear her pulling harness and give the kids sled rides, helped us haul wood at the cottage, etc. Basically anything that allowed her to work under harness.

Huskies also have a pretty sharp prey drive so watch him for chasing cats and for mouthing/heel nipping a lot so he doesn't end up a problem as he matures.

Learning to stand quietly for grooming is a huge deal with these sorts of dogs. Even our part-Husky blew out her coat like you wouldn't believe every year and it would have been hell to deal with if she wasn't good about standing quietly while we dealt with all that undercoat.

    Lovely pup!

Man I want one sooo bad tooo!
I'm getting a house soooon I hope... so then I can get me a dog. I was gonna go huskey but they are a ton of work. But now that your showing us pictures I might just change my mind and do all that work just for the awesomeness of the huskeys! Lab would be nice too... but Huskeys are just crazy!

Re: i got my husky puppy!! (DUW)
I completely third the harness comment. I tried my husky on a harness for a while, and if anything it encourages them to pull rather than preventing it. Now I use just a collar and leash (which took a lot of training to keep her walking NEXT to me and not pulling me like I'm a sled!).

    SO CUTE! Congrats!

PS. Your puppy is beautiful! Beware you are going to see A LOT of hair in the up coming years. Go out and get a good brush and a dog grooming rake. A grooming rake will be your new best friend when it comes to getting all of that under coat out!!! I personally LOVE grooming huskies at my job. My coworkers who are groomers also think I'm nuts.

Re: i got my husky puppy!! (DUW)
I was always amazed at the undercoat Shad had. She actually was likely only about 1/4 Husky. We got her up in the Canadian Yukon where many sled dog racers will breed a little Lab into their pure Huskies to calm them down somewhat. The pups that come out too much Lab are often just given away.

Even with only that touch of Husky in her, Shad loved to pull and was awful to train on lead. A Halti saved my sanity and my shoulders with her. She had a Lab coat but had the Husky undercoat and it was absolutely amazing how much grey fur we got out of her each spring. I swear I could have created a lovely small fuzzy grey dog out of it LOL

    thanks for the info.

whats a halti? i've never heard of that. yeah while he was on the harness he was pulling on me quite a lot excpet when he sat to lay around.and i noticed he like to nip at my feet, socks, pants, and everything he gets his teeth on which is why i bought him like 4 toys yesterday(which he loves!!). and also the bather from the grooming salon told me that she'd give him a quick bath cuz he was dirty(for free) and even she told me that he was not happy to get a bath. as for shedding, i'll get the furminator as it's one of the best tools out there for shedding problems so i'll get one while they're still on sale.

Here's a couple of links to the halti. One is a pic of how it looks on a dog and the other is what the package looks like.
    http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...cfm?pCatId=875
    http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...gkw=halti&sr=1

There is another one out called a "Gentle Leader" but I don't like it as much as the Halti.

They work much like a horse bridle(?) works, by controlling the head of the dog so that he won't pull. If the dog pulls with a halti, his head gets pulled around to the side, then they stop pulling. The halti's are great too in that the part that goes around the mouth will close as it is pulled, pulling the mouth shut. Which I have found very useful especially with my lab that likes to investigate trash that he finds on the road. I just pull slightly on the leash and his mouth closes so that he can't pick it up and possibly eat it....YUCK!!!

almost forgot to ask, what do the husky owners here feed their dog? i was gonna go with Hill's Science Diet: Nature's Best, but the guy was feeding them Nutro Max large breed puppy formula. so i went with the Nutro ultra for puppies since a step higher than the nutro max.

Ya know I've always thought those things looked goofy and uncomfortable. I guess that if everyone is pleased with them it's the way to go. I personally always used a choke chain and leather leash.

Go with something really good, stay away from anything with corn. Make sure real meat is in the first few ingredients. I fed mine Natural Balance, it was incredible food. I also like Eagle pack, royal canin, Nutro (make sure it doesn't have corn), Canidae, Natures recipe, Chicken soup (the dog food not the soup lol), or there is Raw diet, which is incredible, but also very expensive, and you must make sure you have it all right including supplements.

They are expensive brushes, but they are awesome and will cut down on the shedding like you would not believe. You can find those at Petco and Petsmart I believe.

Also, don't use those stupid flexi-leashes - we did that with Diamond, never again - never! You really have no control over your dog, and it only teaches them to be the leader, not the follower. Not to mention in the summer when they whip around you and that leads cuts into your legs - OW!!!!

Typical Labrador, Sunny, they'll eat anything that they can reach. I swear that Labs have some goat blood in there somewhere LOL. Halti's are a godsend for keeping dogs from snatching up anything on the ground during a walk.

Snake, basically the concept of the head collar is that where a dog's nose goes, so goes the dog. When you control their nose, you control them and they can't do much about it really. With other collars that go around the neck or chest you are working against some of their strongest muscle mass (depending on breed) and especially with big breeds, you are going to have a grand old time if the dog is stubborn or dominant by nature. A Halti is not a muzzle though. It does not keep your dogs jaws closed when there is no pressure on the lead.

Most dogs will fight a head collar at first. That's totally normal but they generally give in very quickly and work well with them. Even a short woman like me (I'm barely over 5 feet) can easily control a strong dog using a head collar. If you can move a cow or horse by a halter, you can move a dog. :)

If you haven't got the pup a Kong yet, I'd suggest one. They come in tons of sizes and really stand up well to heavy chewing. You can hide kibble treats in them or even a dab of peanut butter. All our dogs have loved their Kongs and they actually last a good while.

Don't be at all surprised if he fights the halti at first, most dogs do. What we've always done with ours is just let them fight it a bit, call their names to get their attention and when they stop fighting the halti they get a treat (not while their fighting it though). As soon as they walk nicely, another treat or some verbal praise. If the start pawing at it or fighting it, no treats, no praise. One our our dogs was an adult the first time she had a halti on and it took her about 2 days to accept it.

    Very adorable.

The halti was the only thing that helped my sister get hers to walk managably. Starting at 5 months or so and going to 10 instead of walking he'd chomp on his leash and pull you, even though prior to this he would walk perfectly and had completed obedience training. It did wonders for them and they don't even need it anymore (so that is a point against the trainers - their obedience school trainer told them it would take them 4 years of very firm training to get him to calm down for walks when they took him back. It did take him about a month to no fuss put it on though. It probably would have helped my Dads because he just strangles himself on a choke chain, but now thats he's 7 he's naturally calmed down.

Beautiful colors on him so far. It'll be interesting to see how they change as he gets older!

My Alaskan husky is a former sled dog and one of those nose-leading leashes (I guess it's a halti?) is the only way I can walk her at all. Once those dogs get going, absolutely nothing can get them to stop short of extreme braking/pressure... or having their nose turned. :D

And the "Furminator" is my best friend. I even use it on really bad spots on the carpet where she lays down all the time. It's appalling how much fur is still in the carpet even after a good vacuuming.
