I have seen setups like these before, usually they use the same principals as if you were to take a straw, put it in some liquid, put your finger over one end and then lift the straw out of the liquid, the liquid will stay in the straw. I can't remember the fluid principles name off hand.

Those are really neat. It is funny how the higher-level-type fish stay in the upper half, while the bottom-feeder types habitate in the bottom. I saw some going in-between though.

It does look impressive but I can see maintenance and such being a total pain in the sit-uppons.

Also if the air tight seal on the top elevated sections fails he is going to have one wet carpet in a manner of seconds.:D

But he has a bubbler in that section going up, so I think that is where the lower half gets the water from the waterfall. I think it sucks from the top there, and puts it back in the lower half. Very cool though, I would like to know how it works.

I think the airstone is to create a current to prevent it going stagnant? But your probably right about the waterfall as I can't think of any other way to fill it in the first place.

The reason it stays full of water is simply the air pressure on the surface of the water in the open section as far as I know.:confused:

I might try and find out how it works later if my evening turns out as boring as I wish.:D

for the water to flow out of the top section, an equal space of air has to flow in to take its place. if the front wall of the top section extends far enough below the surface of the bottom tank, and the top secion is sealed off at the top, no air will flow into it and therfore no water out.

the bubbler must be drawing air from inside the sealed top tank, not outside, otherwise it would slowly pump all of the water out.

the waterfall probably pumps out from the top section to create an overall current and circulate the water. waterfall to lower to upper.

Submersible biological filter in lower tank helps to maintain clear water. Water change and massive cleaning is minimized. Cleaning is also make simple. Partial change of water and removing of dirt particle, if require, is carried out in the lower tank that include feeding. All rocks and plants in top tank are placed 12cm above bottom tank to allow easy access should siphoning of dirt is needed. Rocks need not have to be removed while cleaning is in progress.
Water current in top tank is activated by air pump.
Fish able to move from bottom tank to top tank without restriction. Mini waterfall in lower tank is to provide extra oxygenation of the water.
The open bottom design allows replacement of plants and decoration as often as you like.
