sorry for the stupid question..

i have read and heard about the snake soakin in the water before they shed... but i was wonderin if they like to just kinda skim the top.... my snake will not soak but he will kinda skim the top and rest a min.then slide a bit and put his belly on to for a bit then let the rest just go over it when he moves.... is that ok ??? sorry for the stupid question

I'm sure that it is just fine. My ball never saoks before shedding, in fact I don't even know that he uses his water bowl for anything except an occasional drink. As long as temps and humidity are correct, then you probably don't need to worry so much about how your snake uses his water dish.

Contrary to what you read healthy, mite free BP that are provided with proper constant humidity rarely soak.

Out of 17 none of mine soak.

The most important if for you to provide your BP with 50%-60% humidity at all time which can be bumped to 70% during shedding, off course this also mean having an accurate reading with a digital hygrometer.

We soaked our BP prior to his first shed with us and might have screwed it up. Turns out you can soak a BP AFTER the shed if it goes bad then help them. See this sticky:

btw only stupid question is a question not asked :) no stupid questions here. pretty sure someone is wondering same thing.

lol still feel silly for askin it :P but im not sayin he soaks...ive never seen him soak.. i just see him skim the top of his water... was just wonderin if it was odd or not

not odd. my burmese python skims her water once and a while. but if you look closely she's drinking as she does it for a minute or two. not a big deal. i know her temps are on point too. no mite problem or else you can DEFINETLY see it in a albino. no worrys. but like they have stated if you see your BP soaking.. thats a different story. soaking=mites/humidity problem. if you see your ball soaking for like a day or so then look closely at the husbandry/mites.

I totally agree that there is no stupid question when it comes to husbandry- so much has been learned about it that even experienced herpers are still learning. :)

Mine never soaks either- I will occasionally catch him taking a random drink, and he always washes down his mice with a big swig or two, but no soaking... :)

ok well since we are on the subject of stupid questions.. i have noticed that my snake tends to go back and forth between the warm and cool side...but has been stayin on the cooler side longer and longer... the temp in the tank did change when i put my heat on.. so i lowered his back so it will get stable again.. but he stil remains on the cool side... sorry for all of this.. its just that i know nothing but what i have read about them and just want to make sure hes ok

Yesterday, my snake must have gone back and forth 4 or 5 times! I hope it's normal. I think they're just regulating their own temp....

just as you said regulating temps. my 7 foot albino burm does that. they moving alot at night? if so they are nocturnal. sometimes they are just curious and checking 1 side out *kind of like a walk :P* then they see a dark spot and go in there. then come back out. slither around and find another dark spot and go in there. as long as your temps are on point and humidity is correct then i see no problem. sometimes my snakes are active moving around from side to side and some days they lay there lazy like if they are just bored. perfectly normal, no reason to worry... not a stupid question neither. i wouldnt call it stupid questions, id say your more worried about your babys :)
