I even looked on the Guinness book of World records website and they had nothing to do with snakes, except rattle snakes...
    You got me wondering now!

But what do you mean by biggest??? Longest or heaviest???
Anacondas are the heaviest I believe and retics the longest!

You got me interested too. So I started looking around and came up with:

Longest - was an Anaconda discovered in Columbia from the 30's that was 34' long (though there seems to be several 30+ foot snakes (a retic though appears never "proven")

Heaviest living snake - dated 2006 was a 403 Burm located at Serpant Safari in Gurnee, IL

    Hope this helps,
    Sean

I saw a follow up to this article that said a British newpaper reporter was sent to cover this story and when reviewed they said it only measured 21 feet and about 220lbs. :confuzd:

I have read abput this particular snake before. A tribe in indonesia had claimed they had a 49 foot almost one thousand pound snake in their possesion. When the herpotologist actually bought it from the tribe and got it back to the zoo and measured it. It was only about twenty one feet in length.

From what I know, a Reticulated Python shot in Celebes, in 1912. The snake measured 32' 9.5". I'm looking around for any records. Best bet would be to contact Bob Clark, Dave Barker, or Dr. Owens on the subject. They could possibly assist you more. After that, Baby the Burmese Python was measured in at 27' long and 403lbs. She was documented by Guiness world records. She's now deceased...

Heres an article from Reuters that confirms the "41 foot snake" was really only 21'. The largest discovered snake was also a reticulated, which was 33' long.

KENDAL, Indonesia (Reuters) - It's still a big snake, just not a record-breaker.

When a recreation park in Indonesia put a huge reticulated python on show last week, keepers insisted to reporters it was 49 feet long. That made it the longest ever caught.

But amid growing skepticism of the claim, a photographer working for Reuters returned to the Curugsewu park in the small central Java town of Kendal Wednesday with a measuring tape. The snake's true length -- around 21 feet

"I have no idea why the snake has shrunk," said one keeper when asked about the discrepancy, as the snake lounged on a tree branch inside its cage.

According to the Guinness World Records, the longest discovered snake was also a reticulated python from Indonesia. It was 33 feet long when found in Sulawesi island in 1912.

In 2002, Samantha, a 25-foot snake which was dubbed the largest in captivity, died in the Bronx Zoo in New York. Samantha came from Indonesia's side of Borneo island.

Record-breaking or not, word of the huge snake in Kendal has spread, tripling the number of visitors to the state-run park, normally known just for its scenery and waterfalls.

that story is a lie...when the snake was measured to be only 21', they claimed it was not the real one and that they had a 49' retic but wouldnt show it to the public because it was some religious thing to them. in other words, their shot at publicity for their community went sour so they tried to salvage their rep by lieing horribly and saying it wasnt the real one.

largest snake i am aware of is the 32' retic found in 1912.

    http://www.mccarthyboas.com/BSTerryM...assius26ft.jpg

i am told that is a pic of the 32' retic, but not sure.

up until last year baby was the largest living snake at 27' and 400+lbs, until she died of "heart failure" and was cut up and tossed into a field by her spectacular and wonderful owners, from serpent safari, in gurnee illinois.

    http://www.mccarthyboas.com/louisbaby.jpg

as of right now, the largest living snake to my knowledge would be fluffy, bob clarks retic which is 22 or 23'

Anacondas are the heaviest I believe and retics the longest!

well a little bit of both i guess cuz i heard the largest found was a burm at over 35 ft. i argued with my bio professor and he told me to look it up. thats why i started searching.

these are all captive snakes. theres got to be larger than 23 ft in the wild you would think. considering i know of snakes in my area pushing 20 ft.

this is all really good info tho! thanks everyone :carrot:

Technically 'heaviest' would be the biggest since it has the most mass. Longest would be a completely different record.

several of bob's, including fluffy, are larger than 23'... if I'm remembering correctly, I believe they are more like 26', maybe a little longer, and over 300 lbs... a little too fat though if you ask me...

here's a pic of yet another of bob's large ones (not fluffy), and obviously this is not my pic, but I don't have a link to it or anything, just have the picture saved... this is what I was saying looked to be a little too chubby...

i was just watching a show on nat geo the other day where they were finding retics in some cave (decent show)... anyway, they went and remeasured and weighed what they said is the longest known living snake (in indonesia). i think it was like 28 ft and 200+lbs or something. definitely was huge but not as heavy as some of the burm and condas out there.

I believe there's still a standing reward of like $50k for a living snake over 30 feet, but it's never been claimed.

the show was on National Geographic, and I think it was called "Dangerous Encounters with Brady Barr"...? It was a little lame in my opinion... he's clearly terrified of retics, CB ones and wild ones alike...

Yeah..Bob has them a bit overfed for the "show" factor. They would be a bit more appealing if they had healthy slenderness to them instead of the "fat" look.

I've seen the longest (legally owned) snake in captivity. She's a retic named Fluffy (strange name for a snake, isn't it?) in Asian section of the Colombus Zoo. She's 24 feet long and they (usually) feed her 10-20 pounds of rabbit. When I saw her (she was resting though), I couldn't get over that head. It was so darn big! I've heard rumors of the 49-foot collosal python, but I highly doubt it could be real.
