    Left or right brained?
Which way is the dancer moving to you? clockwise, or counterclockwise??

    http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegrap...012895,00.html

It's pretty trippy.... It tells what each direction means on the page ^_^

    Re: Left or right brained?
Haha, yeah. It will switch it you really try to get it to. Or sometimes it just does it with out thinking about it. It doesn't *actually* change direction though. My friends and I were all watching it at the same time, and some of us saw one way, some of us saw the other at the same time. So it really is just how you take it in. I thought it was pretty cool! I don't know how true it is about that's what side of the brain you use, but I think it's what direction it's actually going in ^_^

    Clockwise.

I tried so frickin' hard to make her spin the other way and she just wouldnt do it. >_< I feel like I'm only half a person now... *sniffle*

edit: If you watch her long enough she *literally* does change directions. It's not your brain, it's the animation.

    Tis a fraud I say!

Um... OK, I am officially freaked out. I got her to change by looking away and back a few times. I think it's a fraud...? Anyone check myth busters?

    Thats what i was thinking.

It was going clockwise and then I started to read what that meant and as I was reading it it turned to counter clockwise. does that mean i used my other side of my brain to read the info? or is it a mind game farse?

    Re: Left or right brained?
See, I would have said it was a fraud, execpt for the fact that there was 5 of us in the room, and at just about any time, someone say it going a different direction than the someone else. I think it just has to do with the fact that it's just shadowy...there isn't any depth, so you can't tell what is actually in front, or what's going behind. Either way, I thought it was pretty cool.

she goes clockwise for me no matter what. i focused, i read, i looked away, i focused some more but always clockwise. you people that say she changes direction must be nuts. :P

    Re: Left or right brained?
It's not a fraud. There are no three-dimensional cues, so our brains fill in the missing details with something that makes sense to us.

She doesn't change direction...our brains do. If you force your brain to accept it, you can watch her switch directions back and forth without ever making a full rotation.

It's a pretty trippy trick, but there's nothing "fraudulent" about the animation...it's just capitalizing on our tendancy to jump to conclusions based on incomplete data.

She was counter-clockwise for me, then clockwise, and I swear, she actually stopped for a few seconds before changing directions. I do think that the left brain is most accurate of me.

i ABSOLUTELY could not see it going clockwise. I tried for a while too. Only once when I was reading did I see it for a split second going clockwise.

She was going Counter Clock Wise first... then I read the story, looked back up and she was going Clock Wise. I thought it was weird, blinked and she was Counter Clock Wise once again...

clockwise.... I can get it to go counter, but I have to really focus on it.

If your trying to get it to switch for you, it helps to cover the torso up to the hips and just look at the legs.

    Re: Left or right brained?
Yup, starts out counter for me, but I can easily make it switch by looking at the legs when they are "crossing" each other.

I don't need an animation to tell me I'm all about the left brain, though.

To see counterclockwise, imagine the leg sticking out as the left leg - for clockwise, imagine the leg sticking out as the right leg.

    Re: Left or right brained?
It spins two directions at alternating times. When it spins counterclockwise, the left leg is pointed out, the head is leaning to the left side and the left arm is bent. When it spins clockwise, the right leg is pointed out, the head is leaning to the right side, and the right arm is bent.

    There is no optical illusion.....

    ...it was bugging me so I took notes...ha ha....such a nerd :D

    Re: Left or right brained?
I opened the file in Photoshop, and sure enough, it's only moving in one direction. The trick is the legs. Since they are both the same color, and we "know" one has to be in front of the other, our brain simply makes a decision on which leg is in front of the other, which will dictate which way the image is moving (by default, it moves clockwise).

Now, calling this an answer to the "right brain/left brain" question is kind of silly. Like all optical illusions, there are thousands of variables involved that may dictate which direction we "see" the object spinning. It's neat, but it ain't science ;).

Counter clockwise for me, I am kind of a** backwards any way though.

When I look at something else, then see it out of the corner of my eye it goes clockwise until I look directly at it.

Justin I don't think anyone here took this as HARD science, but just as a fun little test. Ya gotta relax, and just enjoy. ;) :giggle: (your sucking all the fun out of it :neener: ) BTW - which way did it spin for you?

Oh and panthercz, stop staring at it quickly or your brain my spontaneously combust. :giggle:
