    RIP Sevirus
I would like for everyone to take a moment of silence for my dear departed baby boy. He sustained a fall off of a branch onto one of his rock hides last night and never woke up. I was 5 months old and 24", wild coloring pattern. I dont know if I will ever own another Royal because Sevirus was so special to me. For my boy who was taken too quickly from me I will always hold a place in my heart for him.

    RIP Sevirus

:( That sucks, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss.

Sevirus cannot be replaced, but giving some TLC to another might help fill the void a little down the road.

Sevirus can live on in your thoughts.

All I know is that when i went to check on him this AM his head was cocked to one side on his one hide made of rock next to his branch, so I kinda put 2 and 2 together and thats what I think happened to him, plus he has been known to be a bit of a klutz :(

All I know for sure is that I miss my baby boy

I don't see how snake could die from a fall within a small cage...but I suppose anything is possible.

If it were me, I wouldn't be convinced that he died of a fall just because he was beneath a branch...

How high off the ground is the branch? 5ft? 10ft? 12 inches?

It was about 1 foot off the floor, i just think he landed at such an angle that he had no chance. But I would like to reminice if i could for a minute.

He was only a baby so there is so much that he missed. He liked to crawl into the pockets of my hoodies. He knew me scent and would meet me when i went to handle him, once he even crawled into my hand. He was so tame that even a child could hold him. He liked mice but not rats. He liked to sit atop his hides. He never balled up for me once, he always sat with his head sticking out of his hide. He lived on the cool side of the tank except for about mid day when he would go over to the warm side to bask.

He was my first snake, and although he probably didn't know nor understand it I loved him, and he will forever hold a place in my heart. He will forever be my baby boy, and I hope that he is getting along well with every other snake that some loving owner has cried over. Cause I know that I have shed so many tears for him to fill his water dish ten fold. Rest In Peace my baby boy I hope heaven has very nice hides for you.

I am so sorry! I can't imagine how devastated you must be. It also freaks me out b/c when wondering away from our laps or hands, our BP has fallen from the couch to the hard wood floor, but he seemed unscathed. But I will be more careful next time!

Hang in there and consider getting another BP. I know it's hard to think of that, but with so much love for snakes, it would be a shame not to.

    Hugs!

I wish I did know exactly what happened but I don't. I dont know if it was instant I hope it was though so he didnt suffer. Thats just what I deduced, all I really know is that I handled him at about 8pm last night, checked his temperatures and humidity (83F cool side, 90F warm side & 55% humidity), cleaned up a bit of poo and put him back in his tank. He ate 3 days prior and was active as per his usual self after that. Before that he had a fecal done by my vet and it came back clean, he had a check up and came back with a clean bill of health. I checked in on him this morning before I went to work at 10am and i found that he has passed. So I basicly can only speculate on what happened.

All I know is that I miss him.

First of all, I would like to say that I am sorry for your loss. It sucks to loose a very special reptilian friend.

But, ...... I would like to add that it is highly unlikely that he died from a fall. I have heard stories of snakes that got dropped from much higher surfaces or slung across the room when someone accidently panicked when they were bit, and no detrimental effects. I would have reason to believe that it could have been a husbandry issue. Where did you buy him from??? Did you happen to have any chemicals on your hands or fuming through the room?? What kind of substrate did you use???
Many questions here that could hold the answer other than your deduction.

Yes it's a bit odd, however... If such was true, it STILL wouldn't be our place to condemn him for it. Shoot... Even if he dropped him off a balcony to a busy street below, what good would it do to berate him? I'm sure he'd feel pretty terrible about it. Our job is to comfort him, and pay our respects to the dead, because in the end, thats what really matters. Besides, I other than the fact that his initial assumption was that the snake died in a fall from a 1ft tall branch, there is no reason to believe a fall from ANY height was responsible. As Mpenn said, it could very well have been another problem, such as airborn toxins etc. So no need to start bashing the OP for one of YOUR assumptions....

Excuse you! :taz: I think an apology is appropriate here. There is no way he would post his sorrow the way he did if he had done something to his snake and "couldn't admit it." Like many moms have always said, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

Sevirus669, I am so sorry for your loss. Clearly, he was a VERY special snake. The fact that he actually CAME to your hand is so wonderful. Hang in there and ignore the dumb comments. I hope you get another BP and stick around to see what a great website this can be.

No Matilda no one "had" to say anything like you've done so far in this thread. First off, you are making broad assumptions and accusations about a member and a situation you have no real information on. Comments such as "u guys just don't have balls" will get you in trouble here as insults to members aren't well tolerated (plus using that wording is just silly....I've got 18 balls actually and that's a small collection compared to others on BPNet).

Perhaps it's time to sit back and think how you would feel should your snake suddenly pass and you were treated as you are treating the OP.

I have to admit to being curious about the death as well, but not in an accusatory manor, just a speculative one. I've always heard that when old people fall and break their hip that actually they probably broke their hip and then fell- so I was just thinking that the snake died of some catastrophic medical condition and then fell. Either way, it doesn't matter.

To accuse someone of killing their snake when they're basically posting an obituary/remembrance is silly and doesn't make much sense. I can tell you that if I ever accidentally killed my snake that I love I probably wouldn't immediately come here and post about it, in fact I'd probably feel like crawling into a hole rather than discussing it with anyone.

True, its one thing to speculate as to why this animal died, but to say the owner is lying is something completely different. They had no idea what happened, and they don't have the money for a vet to find out either. Look at a recent case, we may never know what happened to Nero, but it would be hard to find someone that cared more for his snake then Ben did, it was a shock to everyone, but no one called foul play because it wasn't even reasonable. Sometimes animals die, its a risk, but saying that someone is at fault is not warranted in this case at all in my opinion. They had an opinion on what happened, they may be wrong, but that isn't for us to decide and judge that they are lying.

I have still yet to hear any info to my questions from the OP. If there was something wrong husbandry wise, I would feel better that the OP would be aware of it before he acquired another one. This way, he would have a better experience the next time around. As owning snakes is an ongoing learning experience, it is better to learn now instead of later.

Sorry about your loss sevirus669. :(

I too am very curious about the snake's demise. I agree that a 12" fall could not have killed him. However, I don't think its appropriate to accuse or be demanding of more information.

sevirus669, I think everybody just wants to figure out how this could have happened. I know I'm very curious, not because I want to figure out what you did wrong but because if there is a way a BP can just die like that I'd like ot know what it is!

Once again, my sympathies. And, when you're ready, get yourself another special snake. Old age, sickness, cars, and even a couple of freak accidents have claimed pets of mine in the past. I would have missed out on so much if I hadn't moved on.
