What happens when you raise a cool ch, breed it to a pastel in '05, Then, just for the hell of it, breed it back to its son in '07?

Congrats Justin. Is that a Pastel Pied. I see some color on the head in the egg. It's not a Leucy, so what is it? I too, cannot wait for it to crawl into the camera's view.

It is a piebald, no question about that. There are 2 pieds in the clutch I can't at this point if either of them are pastels...

So then if I'm understanding this, you bought her as just a CH normal female, but now you've proven her to be 100% het pied and her son is also proven to be 100% het pied - and you had no clue of this before hand. Does that sum it up correctly?

That's exactly the story robin. You can't make something that crazy up! :p

When I bred the ch female to a pastel back in '05 I noticed the babies looked just a little unique and different from the other clutches of pastels from that year. I honestly didn't think too much of it and I sold off the entire clutch except for her son, because he was the best looking pastel in the bunch. (I almost sold him too at one point, but decided against it...)

The female did not produce in '06 and then this year I bred her exclusively to her son thinking that maybe I might get some more pastels that look like him.... I was in TOTAL disbelief when I peered into that egg tonight.

When I first saw white in the egg my first thought was "belly scales", but then I realized that I was looking at the back of the animal... :eek: :eek: :eek: I may have yelled some choice words just from the shock of it all.

It looks like I have two pieds that may or may not be pastels and six 66% hets that may or may not be pastels. I didn't desturb them too much...:P

Wow thats just freaky Justin. Actually that is blowing my mind a little?? You had a ch het pied female, bred it to a pastel and made some pastel possible hets. Then bred one of the male pastels from the clutch back to mom and hit the jackpot.

Your own line of pieds! Man there isn't to many lines out there from what I know.

I'm starting to thing that the pied gene is more lightly a co-dom trait instead of simple recessive. After all look at het pieds they are obviuosly different from the typical wild type color an pattern. Also more food for thought the lesser pied I really think there is a some type of link between the two genes. Agh who knows, enough rambling.

Unfortunately they won't be coming out of the egg for a few days still... but do have a couple more pics. I'm quite sure at this point that the one in the pictures is a pastel pied, and the other is definately a normal piebald. I'm feeling pretty fortunate right now... thanks for all the comments!

Wow, those are some amazing odds.

This clutch is not the only one that my pastel-now-het pied male produced this year.

I want to be able to establish the line really well in house and discover what I can about it before I sell a homozygous male. It's early to say but I think there may be some unque characteristics about my line. It will take time to tell. That doesn't mean I can't be talked out of a few poss hets though...

Does cutting the egg open like that have any effect to the snakes? I see people do that a lot. How close to the hatch date do you usually wait? Or is it after the hatch date that you open them?

These babies need to hatch lol. I think we are dieing to see them :D

I don't normal pip eggs manually... But when I have over the years, I've never observed any change in the hatchling positive or negative. The earliest I have every piped has been 54 days. There are some who pip significantly earlier than that. If you notice in my pics the veins are laying on top of the hatchling. Through most of incubation these viens are attached to the inside of the shell, but they drop down in the last few days of incubation... Then again I've never seen a baby that was adversly affected from cutting a vein either.
