question about spider quality?

Hi,

I wanted to ask you guys opinions on this as I have no clue.

Is it considered a really bad thing if spiders do not have nice black markings but instead have a kind of brown markings and even show blushing?

Depends on what you like. Some people like brown stripes, some like low white, some like high white. Just depends on what you want. :D

I believe a spider is a spider. Also consider who you are making your purchase from.

Well I'm far from decided on buying it just noticed it was for sale and a good size.:)

I do really like his head pattern though - he's about 732g according to the guy.

Beauty is generally in the eye of the beholder, for me I like clean Spider (no black spot), medium to high white and a strong dorsal marking.

I came across this one and knew she had everything I was looking for in a spider.

So the question is what are YOU looking for in a Spider?

I personally LOVE the ones with a nice dark pattern, and that goldish sheen on the spine, with a nice darker gold to light brown color down the sides. Throw in some high white calicoish sides, and I gotta have it! :D

I will say that as a Spider ages, the black will start to dull, and not be as crisp. All of my older Spiders have done that. The degree of the fading I guess can be different, as the one in your picture looks browner than all of mine. Hope that helps.

p.s. I pick my Spiders out based on pattern, so color is not as big of an issue for me.

Well I was never the worlds biggest spider fan - But I like the combo's they can produce (especially the spied :wuv: ). And for that the spider pattern is largely irrelevant.

Basically I am worried if I take the plunge and buy this guy and breed him and get lots of little spiders that look like him ( beacuse I'd want a female spider at some point I know it) no one would want to buy them thinking they were second rate or something.:oops:

I know pastels etc are graded and didn't want to buy something at the lower end of the spider line.

Sounds daft I know but I don't know if spiders are graded the same way at all so figured I'd ask.

I do think he's cute myself and, like I said, he has a great head pattern but he isn't cheap in the grand scheme of things and I don't want to buy a lemon ( o.k I do but not this year :P ).

This would definately be my only snake purchase this year if I got him so I'm a bit stressed even thinking of it as a possibility.

Spiders like pastels give varied offspring so a HOT HOT pastel could still give you a turd brown baby. Get a spider you like breed it to a female yo like and see what happens. it may take a couple of times to find the right female. And whats the worst that could happen you end up with a bunch of spiders..Not a down side in my book.

del, do your homework on the breeder. if your going to get a breeder male, make sure he's a stud and not a dud.:)


if you plan on doing the spieds, i don't think pattern/color will influence that any.

This is the bit that makes me nervous. He owns the pet shop but the snake is one of his personal collection and I can't find anything about him online so far.

I have spoken to him on the phone by using the shops contact number and he said he had tried him with some of his girls this year but nothing came of it but that the male had locled up with them.

Now I don't know enough about it to know if that means he may have a fertility problem, the guy just missed the odds, or the lil fella was just too young to get'r'done.

This snake only popped up on my radar by accident a couple fo days ago while I was looking for somerthing else and got curious about a small pet shop in wales having a couple of high end morphs.

The reason he is giving for sale is he spent too much on morphs this year and needed to get a proven breeder to try and recoup some of the time and money on his projects.

I definately will keep trying to find out more about him - his local tnt won't ship live animals so he would be sending it through a friend of his in swansea where they do.

I think he is a nice spider. In my opinion if a female doesn't get gravid after sucessful locks it's probably her cycle or age were not correctly lined up.

If I were to grade spiders I would go by the amount of white and how reduced the pattern. The main thing is make sure he isn't a wild or spastic spinner. I would see him in person first and get good look and feel fo the animal. If he looks good I think a male spider is always a good breeder to have in any collection.

I think spider quality is kind of like pastel quality. Although there are some things that are generally accepted to be good, for the most part its personal preference.

I tend to like low white spiders with dark crisp lines.

Just like I like high yellow pastels with dark black and lots of blushing.

And I like pieds that are about 50/50 with the white and pattern broken up pretty well.

Find which one you like I go with it.

I'd love to but he is about 380 miles away from me. I did ask and he said no signs of spinning whatsoever but he also sounded surprised when I mentioned hearing they all have a slight sign of something. He said he has had him for over 10 months and has never seen any sign of anything amiss.

I wish there was a british equivalent of the BOI.

Some have nothing to speak of but a trained eye may notice at feeding time the bounce before the strike. Thats fine.

My personal preference is a Spider with no spots. I just live the reduced pattern that they have; large areas of flatness with no spots. And a medium amount of white sides; I am not a fan of high-white-sides. I would always go with a spotless one like my guy, but this is just my preference.

I would choose your spider according to what you would like to produce with him. (After you shop the breeder, of course.) If you want to make some kind of clean bees, I would look for a spider with no spots, perhaps high white sides, and perhaps a light overall color. My favorite spider combos include the pastel, axanthic, and lesser traits... so I would look for the cleanest, lightest spider I could find.

If I was thinking of bees it would probably be lesser bee's or axanthic killer bee's - I seem to be developing this leaning towards high contrast or white snakes lately.:confused:
