Goofy pet quirks
All of our pets have their cute, silly, crazy and sometimes annoying things they like to do... what does your pet do that makes you just have to stop, chuckle and shake your head?
My husband's meezer, Siam, is a "skirt chaser". He loves to follow me around the house whenever I'm wearing a dress and jump at my legs. He *only* does it when I'm wearing a dress. I'm not safe in my own kitchen because he'll sneak up behind me and pounce.
I've told Mike about his antics but he's never seen them... until tonight.
I was in the kitchen serving up dinner and sure enough, there is Siam, jumping at my legs, trying to get a hold of my dress. So as I'm going back and forth in the kitchen, I'm watching him, watching me. I start walking in circles, so does he... I start heading into the living room, he follows... I start walking faster, so does he.
I make it into the living room and start running in circles with him jumping wilding at my dress! :O
Mike and the kids just about died laughing...goofy cat!

Re: Goofy pet quirks
I have to walk down a set of stairs to get to my room (the basement) and any time I walk through the door, my youngest cat Tyran will meet me at the door, meow, rub the wall, then follow me down the stairs. She will then walk out in front of me, collapse to the floor, roll over and meow at me to come rub her tummy.
Both of my cats have also learned that when they hear the alarm clock go off, they know its time to jump up in bed and rub the heck out of my hands and feet to get me out of bed. They've got me trained! :P

Re: Goofy pet quirks
My cat won't eat canned food unless you warm it in the microwave for a couple of seconds.

Re: Goofy pet quirks
Cats are so darn funny. One of mine, Mona Lisa, likes to hide under our skirts (my daughter and I both like wearing ankle length skirts).
Lizzie Borden, my Turkish Van, LOVES sticking her head in running water. Cracks me up every time. If someone drops a wet towel on the floor, she loves to roll all over it. And she begs for ice cubes if I'm near the fridge.
Zane, who died in January, used to play tag with me. He was really good at it, too. I miss him! :(

Re: Goofy pet quirks
lol! A skirt chaser..!
Inky, our black cat, loves nuzzling my ankles when I get out of the shower with a towel on. This way, his black hairs stick all over my ankles, making me look like I have not shaved in two years. The little brat!

Re: Goofy pet quirks
Zoey my Shar pei mix is nutty. She is the most vocal dog I have ever seen. She literally sounds like Chewbacca. She has different sounds when she is mad, happy, and all sorts of other doggy emotions. She is really weird, but its hilarious. I will have to video tape her antics one day, especially when she is really happy.
Zab my black lab will come up and lick your face raw. He loves to give kisses. It only drives me nuts when its at 5 am and he is trying to wake me up.
Other than that, both of their gas :puke:

Re: Goofy pet quirks
My cat used to help with catching bugs. I could hold her above my head to get closer to the offending fly pest, and WHAP it was a snack. (I gave up asking the husband to get it... )
Sarah, I'd love a cat that play tag. How cute!

Re: Goofy pet quirks
My daughters cat "Butters" likes to play fetch with the ring that comes off of a gallon milk jug. He will bring it up to you and lay it on your lap and wait for you to throw it so he can bring it back to you. Has done this since he was a kitten and is now 2 years old.
My friends cat scoops up her cat food with her paw and eats it out of her paw. Never takes it out with her mouth from the bowl the food is in.

Re: Goofy pet quirks
my dog, nevaeh has a bad case of insane jealousy. if she sees us pet the cat, she runs right over and starts nudging us with her nose until we pet her too. if we tell her to go lay down, she does but she keeps watching and as soon as gypsy comes near her she snarls and snaps!
gypsy is our wasp hunter. we live in an apartment with a closed in front and back porch. a lot of times we keep our front porch door open to let a breeze in. the porch just happens to have a nests of wasps in the walls. since gypsy's been old enough to pounce, we haven't had to worry about them. she's always liked the porch but i thought she just like watching the traffic go by. then i saw her stalk an injured wasp across the living room floor! good girl!

Re: Goofy pet quirks
Well, my current assortment of animals isn't too cooky...but I've had some really weird animals in the past.
Misty, my old long-haired Russian Blue, loved to sleep in shoes (and I mean IN), sniffed coffee, and adored Arby's Roast Beef.
Gizmo, my mom's black and white cat, would "talk" while she ate. She growled to keep the other cats and people away from her, and it sounded like talking...or something off a Halloween tape.
Ophelia, my Turkish Angora, was also a 'play fetch' cat. She claimed one of my fake pearl necklaces and would love bringing it to us and leaping after it to drag it back for more.
Tangerine, my ex-husbands' female orange tabby, was the cat-dog. She meowed every time someone called her by name, came instantly when called, and loved everyone and anyone. The only feline thing she did was to be a 'rug cat' - i.e. she would zip across the room at high speed and end up a pair of eyes and a nose under the rug (or jeans, or towel...anything laying around, really).
But the master of weird behavior was my first cat, Pippin. He was a grey tabby with the brain of a fish...he was so stupid it was hilarious. He regularly missed jumps of only a few feet, and would return to my father seconds after having been thrown into a snowdrift by him. The best thing, though, was when he was chasing a bird around the backyard. Tired of hopping around in the grass, it flew up onto a fence post, so Pippin followed it. When it had had enough, and saw the cat jumping up for it, the bird took off for the skies...and Pippin followed it with a graceful leap that landed him in the compost pile. :)

Re: Goofy pet quirks
LOL These are great!
*My* cat, Rattles, is the quentassental (sp?) morning toe biter.... but only with my 6 year old daughter. :8: He will go into her room every morning, flop down on her blanket by her feet and start nibbling on them. As soon as she moves her feet "the game is on!". He will stalk, pounce, leap, whatever it takes, to get a bear hug around her foot and start chewing on her toes until she gets out of bed.
With me, he's the "alarm clock". He comes into the bedroom every morning around 7 am, motor going loud as can be and starts rubbing his belly back and forth across my face. If I don't succumb, he proceeds to laying across my neck and starts kneading my hair and head and rubbing his nose on my ear. He'll do this for as long as it takes for me to get my lazy butt out of bed and get him and his brother their breakfast.
One of the cats I use to have (a seal point siamese), would get up on the bed every morning, sit on my chest and stare at me until I opened my eyes. If I didn't open my eyes, he'd get right up in my face and put his cold, wet nose on mine. If I still did not open my eyes, he'd give his nose a good lick to make sure it was plenty wet then put it on my eyelids. If THAT wasn't enough to get me to at least blink, he'd start licking my eyelids! :O Now imagine how it would feel to have a cat's sand paper tongue all over your eyelids..... worked every time; I was up then for sure!

Re: Goofy pet quirks
Awesome stories! I swear I will never be without a cat for as long as I live.

Re: Goofy pet quirks
My female Beta, Chloe is a talented fish. I bought her last fall out at college and she showed her talent right away. She's a very excitable fish--and whenever someone walks into the room she gets all giddy, because she's expecting food. She got so excited one night when I was going to feed her, that she lept out of the water. I thought it was pretty neat, so every time I would go to feed her, I would dangle her fish food box over the bowl until she jumped.
Now, it's pretty automatic behavior for her. I was so proud of her talent that I'd show everyone who came over. When I brought her home for the summer, my parents fell in love with her--my Dad especially (he says she's so smart because she's "college educated"). I stopped feeding Chloe myself entirely over the summer because I found out my Dad was feeding her, my Mom was feeding her and my Sister was feeding her (overfed Beta alert!). We worked out a system for not overfeeding her soon thereafter--I didn't want her to get fed to death!
When it came time for Chloe and I to go back to college, I decided that because my parents got so attached, I would leave her at home. My parents were really happy about it--and I'm sure they're spoiling her rotten!

Re: Goofy pet quirks
If I ever leave a HI-C Orange juice box unattended, Munchie will sneak on over and will grab the straw and store it away, knock it over and drink as much as he can before I find it. Silly kitty.
He has always been one to play fetch. He just loves those plastic spider Halloween rings. When you go to throw it he makes these short meows.
Cats are so funny. Could never live without one.

Re: Goofy pet quirks
My red belly turtle begs for food. Every time my daughter, boyfriend or myself walk by his tank, he starts flailing his legs and trying to climb out of the tank. It is the funniest thing to watch.
One of my cats seems to think he is a dog. Goes out to potty with the dogs, eats out of their bowls, comes when you call him, loves his tummy rubbed and even drinks out of the toilet. I swear if he starts barking, I will not be surprised.

Re: Goofy pet quirks
Everyone's stories are so funny. I have so many stories, it is hard to pick a few to post.
My dog Bear (whos a grumpy old man... LOL..he's 10 yrs) will come nudge you with his nose when he feels he is not getting enough attention. When he was slightly younger, he used to jump up on the front door, run around the living room in a circle, then jump back on the door to let you know he wanted out.
We had a dog Kody (who has since passed) that used to lay on the couch and pull up a blanket over him. All you could see would be his nose poking out. I miss him alot!!
Our newest dog,Cubby, will let you know when he is hungry and his food bowl is empty by running around the house with his bowl in his mouth. He has also found that the best water in the water bowl apparently must be the water at the very bottom, so he will dig in his bowl to get to that water.... we have since put a huge plastic mat on the floor to catch the unwanted, less than the best top water...LOL.
Our oldest cat Peek-a-Boo is an indoor outdoor cat. He also eats his canned food by scooping it with his paw, and will run to the front door and almost sing letting you know that he wants out. And when he wants back in he will climb up on our little plastic shed which is located outside just under the little kitchen window (which doesn't have a curtain covering it). He will sit there until someone walks by and then "cry" and just stare at you, usually scaring me half to death.
My other two cats love the rings on the milk gallons also. They will play together with these, almost like playing soccer in the kitchen, until it gets "lost" under the fridge.
My male cockatiel, Ceasar, can "sing" a smoke detector alarm. He sounds exactly like one going off and is pretty loud about it too. Luckily he doesn't do it very often, but when he does it is usually about 5am...

Re: Goofy pet quirks
Oh geez, milk carton rings!
Siam LOVES those things and will *not* let Rattles have them. Siam will quite literally run off and hide them in our bedroom so Rattles won't play with them. If he catches Rattles with one or, God forbid, I should give him one, Siam will walk up, bulldoze Rattles, grab the ring away and head off to either go hide it or get up on our bed to play with it... by himself.

Re: Goofy pet quirks
These are so cool!
My resentfully tripedal cat Captain Ahab has a wet hair fetish...everytime I get out of the shower and sit down on the couch, he begins gnawing on my scalp. It's very odd. He's done it to a few other girls who've been guests, but never to a guy. If I move away, he uses his claws to maintain his grip.
When I go to work, I have to take my little Papillon mix with me. She has mastered "Stay" to the point that I can put her in a chair or pet bed and she will not get up. One day she was there for 12 hours straight when we were all too busy to remember to take the poor thing out. She thinks it's her job...she flies out the front door to the car every morning, and when we arrive she fusses at me until I lift her to her bed on the front desk. She loves greeting all the clients, and now they ask for her by name! We're at work now as I type this, and she's curled up on a towel next to the keyboard, snoring delicately.

Re: Goofy pet quirks
Funny stories! Here's a few of my own (all these pets have gone on to their rest after living long lives with us).
Shadow our black lab tried to nurse the new kitten Puss Cat. Poor thing had no milk, having never been bred but she sure thought that kitten was her baby. Gawd help any neighbourhood dog that dared to even glance at "her baby" LOL.
Shad had a thing about raiding the garbage or stealing food (she'd been a hungry stray before we adopted her) but poor Shad had a terrible time with her guilty feelings LOL. She'd steal something then before she could bring herself to eat it, she'd bring it to us....eyes downcast, tail between her legs, mouth full of contraband. Nothing would make her feel better unless you took it away from her, told her in a firm voice (most of the time we were pretending) that she was a naughty dog for stealing things. Then she'd perk right up and run off...happy she'd been caught I guess LOL.
She was also a hypochondriac. She'd be fine but if you said "oh dear Shad are you feeling sick? poor girl!" she'd slowly slide down till she fell over on her side. Of course a simple "hey Shadow, want a cookie?", brought her back to full health again. What a nutty dog she was!
Her buddy Puss Cat, having been "nursed" by a dog spent her life pretty much convinced she was one. Didn't much like other cats, thought dogs were cool, heeled on walks, loved car rides, came when she was called and pretty much was top dog of our house. Funny enough....unlike most cats she detested anything made of fish/seafood....adored pork chops and steaks!
Puss had one very odd habit. When she was a kitten she'd lick/groom men's armpits while they slept. My ex-husband or any male guest of ours that slept in our house had to keep that kitten locked out of the bedroom or chance waking up with sore armpits or being constantly bugged at night while she tried to tidy up their pits....goofy kitty!

Re: Goofy pet quirks
My cat Ginger is a clepto, I noticed that I had some money missing one day (figured hubby snaged a 5$ or some thing), one day my purse was unzipped and I watch my fat cat jump INSIDE my purse jump out with a dollar bill in her mounth and run behind the sofa. I followed her and found about 12$ a pack of cigs and about 100 lighters. When we let the dog out to potty Ginger stands by the door to catch any thing that comes in (including the dog). If I'm yelling at the dog she'll run up and start slapping the dog in the face and bitting her feet. She is by far the loudest stepping cat I have ever seen, and when you pet her you can only pet her for 10 sec before she'll bite you she's a mean kitty (the people who had her before had meanie kids that tormented any kind of animal and if the animal defended its self it got kicked by mom and dad!). She is the WEIRDEST cat I have ever seen and if I were to list all of her quirks this would be a 20 paged post.
Lexi our Pit Bull HAS to sleep under the covers with her head on a pillow or she will not go to sleep. Lexi and Ginger both watch Animal Planet when we go to work, one time we foregot to leave the tv on and when we came home the house was a MESS. Poo on the floor, litter box fliped over, trash can fliped over, and a nice sized hole in my sofa:eek: , they're way of saying "that's what you get" and they both looked very pleased with them selves! Since then Animal Planet is marked Fav #1 on the remote and we will NEVER make that mistake again!:colbert:

Re: Goofy pet quirks
lol, what a fun thread!
My cat eats lettuce to fit in with the rabbits and all of her odd little quirks... (she begs for all kinds of foods you wouldn't think a cat would want). She also likes to watch my hunter's pet croc in WoW. Gamer cat! Sadly though she's never learned to cover anything properly in the litter box in all her 18 years. She knows she's supposed to scrape something, and will scrape random things around the litterbox, but never actually made the connection between doing that and covering poo. In fact, she almost never scrapes anything that touches the litter sand at all.
Bowie, in particular, is our sweet gentle weirdo. The other two buns are very mischevious, but he's just... odd. He never digs or destroys anything, sweet as can be, but he has a thing for licking random inanimate objects and is infuriated by the mere presence of raisins. And only raisins, he's pretty zen otherwise. I have no idea why this could be.
Daphne will shove her head under him to plead "Please groom me!" and he'll totally ignore her and groom the wall instead. The other two groom Bowie all the time, but he generally tends to groom something else randomly. I have some evidence of this on youtube, lol Unut grooming him while he grooms... the tv tray. He grooms them back every once in a while, but usually ends up grooming something else too. Funny thing is though you can always predict when Bowie is about to lick something. He stops and thinks really really hard about it a while before he starts!
Both our boy bunnies like to play with string too, they love cat toys.
My sister's cat Matrix used to lay down by his food dish and scoop food out of it with his paw. Now that's lazy.
I also had a pet mouse once named Gir who was madly in love with his wheel. He would chase other mice off of it, sleep on it, and leave it only for food. And when he was running on it he'd occassionally stop to... erm... let's just say, I regretted having that tank up by the computer. I did not need to see just how much he loved that wheel, and certainly not that often! :O So not right...

:rolleye2:
My cat Skinny thinks I am her mother. If Im lying in bed without much cloithing on, she will get under the blanket and try to suckle me.....and its painful too!! She is over 2 years old and will still try!
Also she loves the attack my legs if I dont have pants on. If I have a towel on when I get out of the shower, she will chase me and paw at my legs. She never uses her claws when she does it so it almost tickles! I love that damn cat!
-
Re: Goofy pet quirks
My old cat, Chachi, used to attack my toes... She hated toes. She used to do the same with my mom's toes and my two little brother's also.. And sometimes she used to wait in a corner and when you would walk by she used to attack you. And every day she would wait for me to come home and when she would hear the door opening she would jump on the couch next to the door and greet me... She was the cutest thing ever!
My dog Nikki snores...
My dog Moo-Moo barks and stands in two legs when she wants attention.

Re: Goofy pet quirks
We had a little black mutt dog when I growing up, older than I was, name Mazzeltov. She lived foooorever, but then when you bless an animal everytime you talk to it, it's gonna happen.
She was mostly an outdoor dog, but loved to come inside as much as possible. Mazz would stand at the patio door and if she saw you, shiver uncontrollably to show you how cold she was and that she needed to come in. If she didn't see you, she wouldn't shiver...but as soon as she caught sight of you, the shivering would start. Smart dog. =)
Other than that, I have a couple of snakes that slither a lot when they're hungry...=)

Re: Goofy pet quirks
My Dad's dog has the funniest personality I've ever seen... He's jealous as heck but only when he knows you like him more than the other animal. If there's another dog in the room and he knows that he's the undisputed favourite he will literally muscle them out of the way so that you can't pet them and hence begin to like them... My sister's dog is usually the target. My own dog never had that problem Bailey let him get away with anything, he could eat out of his bowl, lay on his head, interrupt Bailey's petting sessions and even hump him constantly and Bailey didn't care - any other dog and it was game on though. He also *will not* sleep unless someone is holding one of his paws. If you let go he wakes up and swats you till you take it back.
My first dog was sweet as pie favourite animal ever - literally saved my life at least once - loved everyone and everything... Unless someone upset me. Quaranteened I believe 9 times in total in his life for defending me... I was the only one in the family he would act like this around... If I was outside playing, which I always was, then he was sitting near me watching... If I got uneasy at someone or something, he'd start growling. The kicker was the two times we thought we'd have to put him down over it... Bit the mail man for picking me up as a baby and me screaming, and had a brawl with a wolf that didn't survive the attack. The mailman was actually extremely understanding though.
My fish wave to you and beg for food, follow you around the room... And 'kitty' (aka Cleo) has a thing for sitting in my hair the entire time she's being handled.

Re: Goofy pet quirks
Emma, one of our horses, is a nut when you give her her evening feed. We put the pelleted feed in rubber bowls that are about the size of a dinner place and 6 inches deep. Well, Emma has to bite into the bowl, move it around until it is in the spot she wants it in, and only then will she eat. She sometimes spills it all over and seems to enjoy picking it out of the straw in her stall.
