    Re: Finished custom cages
Biggest one going in there is 700g and the smallest is 525g... Id actually like to see other peoples set ups as well... The reason I made these is right now I use 96qt tubs (dimensions are like 36x12x18.5) and my snakes have like no room to move... I will snap some pics of their homes now but with 2 hides, a water dish, and this plastic thingy ma bob for them to climb on it leaves them like no room to move... theyre always moving their hides around and what not at night when theyre awake bc they got no room to move... Ive been asked "why such big cages?" and Im curious to see how everyone else manages to fit everything in a 66qt tub or whatever they use... I have 3 07 babies that I keep in 66qt tubs and I have no idea how you could fit a 4-5ft snake in such a small enclosure?

    Hey Josh,

I'm new to this and have made just about every mistake in the book. I thought I would give my baby (20 inches) a nice big thirty gallon tank. Apparently from what I'm told the tank is way too big. How do you set up a tub? I understand this is the way to go. Do you think that, aside from your beautiful cages, a plastic tub is the wat to go?

Yes a tub is much much easier to get things down... I like you started off with glass only to spend countless hours messing with different stuff to get temps/humidity up... I got them right (still use a 40gal for my RTB) but spent extra cash and wasted time trying to do so... I'm much much different than your average BP owner and believe the more space the better... I started my first baby ball off in a 40 gal and never had any problems with feeding stress or anything... It really all depends on your ball... For beginner I would reccommend starting with something smaller just to prevent any possible problems... some people start off with 12qt tubs and others like me like bigger tubs and mine are in 66qt... Its really up to what you would like your snakes to have as long as you know there are potential problems(not eating, stress) with a larger tank. Nothing saying this will def. happen as I have never had this problem but it can be an issue... Youd set a tub up just like a tank... heat pad on one side hooked to a thermostat, 2 identicle hides(zilla makes black plastic ones... I use the smallest for my babies), a water dish, and something to climb on if you would like... Id try to get the snap top tubs just bc they lock somewhat to prevent the lil guy from escaping... I put a small brick on mine to prevent anything like that... I can go into more detail if you need but thats pretty much it...

Plastic tubs are DEFINITELY the way to go. Speaking from experience, if you're looking for ease of setup and environmental stability you can't beat Sterilite or Iris tubs.

So you say you had a 96qt tub set up for each, and they had no room? I find that hard to believe, considering most people would agree that a 41qt tub is large enough for even the biggest BP's... Remember they are a Terrestrial species, and spend most of their time in termite mounds and rodent burrows. They want tight, confined spaces. It makes them feel secure, and generally promotes healthy eating habits.

Understood but isnt that why we have tight hides?? So when theyre asleep they feel safe?.. What about the 6-8hrs theyre awake at night while your asleep? I dunno bout your snakes but ALL of mine are out and roaming their tubs at night... I will post some pics of my current set up tonight to show you the little room they have... Do you care to show pics of your set up?? I am very curious to see how a 41qt tub can hold a 4-5ft snake... I'm pretty sure yours are much smaller height wise but its probably the same ground space as a 96qt... I also believe that the whole small tub better feeding habits is more for babies than older snakes... Theyre young... insecure... and take time to get adjusted to you being their owner... After youve had them for a yr or so like mine they become accustomed to the routine youve developed with them and they develop a minor sense of security...none of my snakes have missed a meal so I'm not too sure how true that statement is... this includes my 07 babies in 66qt tubs.

I have an 05 female who, if moved to anything bigger than a 15qt tub, will stop feeding. She gets very insecure, won't come out of her hides, nothing. In the 15qt, it simulates a burrow for her. She's usually sitting on top of her hide now or halfway in her hide, halfway out. She eats great and if it ain't broke, I'm not fixing it. When I first got her, I put her in a 32qt tub thinking she'd be fine. She didn't eat for a good month and when she did start eating, it was very sporadic. Feed one week, refuse for 2-3 more weeks, eat another week.

I have a 5.5ft female in a 41qt tub. She has plenty of room to stretch out, and her feeding response is nothing short of scary. She has plenty of room to thermoregulate properly and successfully reproduced this past season, giving me 7 eggs.

When you hatch out babies eventually, are you intending on keeping everyone in individual 96qt tubs? That'd take up alot of room.

I have to agree with Becky. I have full grown breeding females that do perfect in 41 quart tubs Cb-70 tubs.

The main reason BP's go off feed is the temps are too cool or the enclosure is to big. Large enclosures make them feel extremely vulnerable and insecure as well as make it difficult to keep ambient temps at 83 degrees and humidity at 50%. I asked if they were for BP's because they looked more like RTB cages to me. Those commenting like myself have many many BP's and say this from experience not to just to be critical. I would split each tank into 4 separate areas and house 4 snakes per tank. But thats just me.

I never said you had to fix anything... If it works for you and your snakes then thats awesome... I prefer more room for my snakes and for all my animals in general... If they eat/poop/shed on a regular basis with no problems then whats wrong with offering them more room? I'm not saying I'm right and your wrong or anything I'm just explaining why I built these cages... I dont keep my babies in 96qt tubs they are in 66qt tubs... When I breed next yr and have babies no I do not plan on keeping them all in 66qt tubs... Like you said that would be ridonkulous and take up a ton of room... Do I plan on keeping my hold backs in 66qt tubs? Absolutley... I plan on buying a breeder rack to keep the other babies in until they are sold... If I cant sell them and need to move them to something bigger then I will worry about that then... Again I'm not saying anyones wrong here... I just do things a bit differently but I dont think anyone can say I'm wrong either(im not saying your telling me im wrong).

I agree, I would LOVE one of those for a boa cage. My girl is getting up to almost 8ft so her VE175 tub from reptiletubs is getting a bit cramped :) Fatty

How much do you think theyre worth?? It was pain in the arse building them but I was thinking I would sell em if it would be worth my time... I would build one for my RTB but he likes to climb and be up high so I'm probably going to end up building something much taller prolly in the 4ft range.

I agree if it works for you go for it. Every snake is different what freaks one out may not bother another. If they are doing well, more power to you! :sunny:
