Questions about GTP...

Right now I only have ball pythons, but I think eventually I would like to have a GTP. It'll probably be at least a year, maybe two...but I have a few questions anyway. How big do they get on average? Can you house them together? Can you hold them or are they too nippy? Thanks!

they are very nippy. they bite on a consistant basis. if you find a calm one, its most likely sick. Its a stunning snake that will get 6ft. You can house them togather if there is ample space, but with the attitude one is a handful

I am sorry but have you ever owned a GTP?

It seems to me you have no clue what you are talking about.

A. I have a very healthy GTP that does not bite.

B. Many others do as well.

C. You should never house to snakes together unless you are breeding.

Ok, sorry about putting it in the wrong place. Thanks for the information everybody. So, I can not house them together (which I suspected) and it is possible to get one that is not so nippy. Mike, are you comfortable enough with yours to hold them? Or do you mean not nippy, as in if you try to clean their cages they won't bite you? Thanks again!

If you're positively interested in Green Tree Pythons I highly recommend that you pick up Greg Maxwell's "The More Complete Chondro"...its an excellent read and will give you endless amounts of useful information.

Don't worry about putting it in the wrong place bro.

I can handle mine during the day no problem. With GTP's however you do NOT want to try and handle them at night, mine is always in hunting mode unless in shed or recently fed. Just the other night I made the mistake of sticking my head in to get a feel for the humidity level and temperature when she decided my face might make a nice meal. Now thankfully I was full of monster (energy drink) and quickly pulled away so she missed.

Look at it this way: its like someone pulling you out of your bed during the day, and someone trying to pull you around when your awake. Your going to have a very different reaction.

So yes I can handle mine during the day without being struck at. But there are plenty of GTP's that have a very nasty disposition but I believe that comes with every snake. :rockon:

And everyone suggesting The More Complete Chondro is right on!! One of the best books I've read PERIOD. Whether your just reading it for fun or seriously considering a Gree Tree Python/

That's sound like a drunken bet more than anything else, lol :P . Those Monster energy drinks are no joke though. I think I'm going to have to get a GTP one day.

I will have to agree with Mike (8b8ll) here. You have no clue what you are talking about.
With that said, I will back up any advice Mike has given you. It is right on the money. There are also some locales of GTP's that are tamer than others.
I have always thought of them more of a display animal though.

YOU NEVER, NEVER, NEVER WANT TO HAVE MORE THAN ONE GTP PER ENCLOSURE!!! Unless you cycle the male and female separately and then introduce the male to the female enclosure to breed them and then that is only temporary a few weeks to a few months...

To the guy who stated they are nippy, bite consistantly and if you find a calm one it is most likely sick...you are way off base and should not comment on something you know nothing about...

I have several that are very calm, good natured, and have never struck at me what so ever (during the day of course, at night it's a whole other ball game).

They are very cool snakes and really neat to work with...totally different and keep me very interested. I would highly recommend them to anybody interested, but I suggest you do your research first.

Whoever suggested the book "The More Complete Chondro" by Greg Maxwell is right on with this suggestion....I recommend you read it FIRST before getting the animal, so you know what to expect...
