:O!!!!!!!!
im in love with those snakes!
how're theyre temper? they look amazing.

Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
Jade sits better than the ball pythons calm and still. Which is why she has a huge layout compared to everyone else. I just chose the best 10 shots, then went on from there...
Onyx is still a baby yet, so he gets a little angsy after a while.

Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
im so confused about the whole Sumatran Short-tail/ blood thing. are they the same snake? or completely different? and how aggressive is the Sumatran Short-tail and are they easily tamed?
-
Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
Sumatrans are a different species than the Borneo short tail or the Blood Python. It's commonly referred to as the Black blood, and thats because at one time it was a subspecies of the Malayan Blood Pythons. Sumatran Short tail [aka black bloods] are said to be the calmest of the three species, but I have no experience with the other 2.

Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
First off - gorgeous snakes!!! That is a really killer pair of Sumatran blacks!
With regards to species/localities, Sumatran short-tailed pythons were at one point the nominate species - Python curtus. The blood pythons (Python brongersmai) and Borneo pythons (Python breitensteini) were considered subspecies of the Python curtus, and the three were referred to as Python curtus curtus, Python curtus brongersmai, and Python curtus breiteinsteini (respectively), until elevated to individual species status several years ago.
Blood pythons come from eastern Sumatra, Malaysia, parts of Thailand, and a few smaller islands. Sumatran short-tails (the black ones) come from southern & western Sumatra. Borneo pythons are only found in Borneo & Sarawak (a region in Borneo).
Hope that helps clear things up a bit! :D

You said they're supposed to be the calmest of the 3 species but that doesn't quite answer the question hehe.
Timber, Pigmy, Diamondback, one could be the tamest, but it still doesn't mean you have a friendly/tame snake ;) hehe.
What do you think in temperament in comparison to other species such as red tails, kings, milks, balls, ETB, GTP and so on? Thanks in advance!

Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
Wow! Beautiful babies... The pictures reminded me of my old Borneo. Damn I miss her

In the November issue of Reptiles, Dave and Tracy Barker gave a great overview of the Blood pythons, past and present, and a great little paragraph on their tempers. (including the sumatrans). When compared to my ball pythons (i said this earlier ;)) She is by far calmer and more laid back. It's the only way I can describe it. The only other species besides Balls and Sumatrans is a corn, and he's very excitable compared to the balls, but I can handle him after the 5 minute "OH oh! whats going on!" phase for longer than the ball pythons.... Does that make any sense? I'm running out of comparisons.
In general, my Jade is the tamest animal I have ever had, very docile and easy to handle, and has never tried to strike at me or appeared aggressive like the Malaysians are said to be.

Me and my boyfriend traded her... We had her for two years but she was still very agressive... sometimes we had to wear gloves. We both loved her... It hurt us so bad to let go of her. She was beautiful... And a very good eater.

That's really sad. I don't think I could let go of any of my animals. It would be a heartbreaker, esp one so damn pretty. So sorry, hopefully you will have better luck with the next one~ ;)

I have a question... Do your black bloods like to take swims?

Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
In her water bowl yes! She made a huge mess last shed. These animals I suppose will soak if given the opportunity to. I just assume that because they are from swampy land, and they do have a very upright oval build that suggests it... But I'm not 100% on that one.

Mine used to do that... Her whole body would be inside and only the front of her face would be out...
-
Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
Chris is actually going to making her a nice water bowl so that she can comfortably sit in it if she like. The only thing I would worry about is that they "hide" in their water when stressed. So hopefully everything works out well with that.

Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
How they holding up for you? I catch myself checkin out this thread every now and then. They look absolutely gorgeous. How big is onyx now? What's he chowin down on? I'm seriously considering get back into bloods as i'm workin on a military letter to get approval to have a snake in my "hole" (room), and would like a lil pee wee curtus with me.

Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
LOL, well little onyx is a lamb! He takes a weanling every other week right now. (He's never interested 2 consecutive weeks in a row) And HOLY CRAP, Jade had the strongest feeding response ever just a couple weeks ago! She was in her hide waiting for the rat, we put one in and you could see her tensing up to strike. JUST as she struck the rat skipped away, and instead of doing a face plant into the side of the tub, she curved straight up into the air at light speed!!!! OMG was all I could say, it was a split second reaction time, WOW Damn, she is one hell of a snake. And Jade is the most peaceful snake in my collection! Onyx cant sit as long as Jade, but he is coming along real nice. I really do love these two! :D
I think that would be great if they would let you bring a blood in, I personally would be worried about roomies getting outta line. I hope your blessed with good fortune and buddies!! and get another, you cant live without blood.... ;)

Those are fantastic blacks! I love the head shots.

Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
I've got a brongersmai. But man oh man do I love the black bloods. Especially yours. Something about the real dark ones is just stunning.
-
Re: It's hip to be square! (DUW)
Thanks! I hope she grows up to be just as dark as her momma! She literally turns blue to shed, I love it. She is just the best animal I have and I really cant wait to get more. :D
