Kobi loves her back rubs, especially right before shedding.

Re: back arching.
i just kinda started lightly petting him slowly on his back as he slithered about. he started responding by arching after the initial recoiling as i was taming him.

When mine first did it he stayed arching for a minute or two. At first i thought there was something wrong with him.

Re: back arching.
I don't know if my little girl will do that during handling, as we are still in the settling in period...no handling... It is SO hard to wait.
However, I have noticed that when she slithers around her cage, sometimes when she goes under the driftwood that she'll arch her back up to touch it as she goes under it.
Wonder why they do it?

It feels good. Kobi will do that (see pics above), then come back around for more. What else could it be..? lol

Re: back arching.
Kasi's girl does it all the time. Her first she that she had with her we kinda started early b/c Kasi was scratching her back and it started to pull the old skin off :P They really are cute when they do that ^_^

Re: back arching.
It's simply an instinctive reaction to your stimulus. That's why they do it. :)

Re: back arching.
yeah thats what i thought and also on slippery/loose surfaces it helps him move with the firm grip. my one does it too.

Re: back arching.
oh... my always squirm away from me.... >.<

Re: back arching.
I doubt they do it because it "feels good". They'd probably like nothing more than to get away from you and get back in their hide. :D

I'd wager that all creatures like having their back "scratched." Bears do it on trees, humans do it to each other, and snakes don't have hands, so they use branches and my fingers.
Now if they were always trying to get away while doing it I'd agree with you, but mine actually come back through for a second or third pass sometimes, which says to me they're getting some enjoyment out of it.

Eh whatever. I don't like making comparisons between mammals and reptiles -- doesn't really work.

Re: back arching.
Whether the snake likes the feeling or it's just nerves firing off or whatever, in the end does it really matter? If you as the owner are enjoying your snake, the snake itself is well and healthy, then I think that's all we need read into any handling occurrence. :)

Well said! But yes, both of my BP's do the 'back arch'. My female will do it nearly every time that I run my fingers down her spine, while my male will only express this behavior when he's close to the end of his shed cycle.
