thinking about getting out of it??
Well the past month has been really hard on money for my fiance' and I.I have a good paying job, but have made some bad moves when it comes to money. I have been just thinking about getting out of Ball pythons, reptiles in general. Dont get me wrong i love them to death. The last thing i want to do is sell any of my reptiles. Any suggestions on what i should do? Or what you have done in this situation?
Please keep in mind that she does not agree with the snakes. She's interested in them but is afraid of them .

I would be willing to bet that there's some people out there who will take your most beloved animals into their care for a month or two, maybe more.

I know what your feeling. At one time I had 14 show dogs, who more than anything were family. When I fell on hard times I had to part with all except the 4 elderly ones who stood little chance of finding a good home. My heart was ripped out, but I couldn't afford a place where I could keep all of them. Luckily my best friend helped me find good forever homes for the younger ones. The older ones lived out their days with me. I only have three now to show, but that is a number that if I fall upon hard times that we will make it thru together.

Maybe you could find good homes for most and keep your favorites. When times get better you could start again. The main thing is to do what is best for you and them. Things have a way of working out. I was upset about placing my young dogs, but they were so happy to get more attention than I could give at the time from their new families.
    Good luck whatever you decide.

Wait, are you thinking of selling them for money, or because your fiance dislikes them?

Either way, you can make a compromise and sell a few while keeping your favorites. If it's solely about the money there are always luxuries you can cut back on instead. Do you smoke? Quit. Same with beer, at least until you get back on your feet. Buy cheaper food, stop buying steaks and buy pasta instead. The little stuff adds up way too quickly.

I think you might be making a conclusion about his financial situation, which I don't know what it is but if he feels he needs to let go of his whole collection. A man has to do what a man has to do. Although its hard for all of us to see, there are more important things in life than snakes. I am sorry to hear that though

I wouls day; trim it down to a manageable number.. I am not sure how many you have. But I already know the 1-2 snakes i would keep if I had to get rid of all out 1-2.. it is tough I know. Not that it is the same; but we had hard times years ago and i sold off most of my extensive model horse collection.. some of which went on to triple in worth since then.. but proritizing is key in life.

I was going to sell them for money. And i do smoke, my beer(s) of choice are not the cheapist out there(st. paulie girl, heiniken, becks and so on). so i need to quit smoking and buy cheaper beer.

I have 13 balls and one RTB. I am sure i could keep just one or two but it is so close to breeding season, i want to give it a shot. i have 4 female's and a lesser male, spider female, pastel male and albino male that are all ready to start breeding.

Breeding is only going to bring about more snakes... as im sure you already know (duh josh!) which will obv increase your expenses... If your trying to get rid of them you prolly shouldnt be breeding because what happens when you cant get rid of the babies?? Now you have to sit on em and you collection has gotten bigger. Best of luck

That really sucks but family first right. If i were in your shoes i would try my hardest to keep them, i dont think i could part with my collection. But if you have to sell them make sure your giving them to good homes. Good luck :salute:

Family and yourself first...hobbies last. Hobbies are luxuries so they should be the first to go when times are hard...I had to learn this the hard way.

With this said there are ways to limit your expenses:

Switch all your snakes to F/T - this is significantly cheaper then buying live ever week.

Switch to newspaper as a substrate - this is basically free (just get those community papers they give away)

As has been said before DO NOT BREED. All this does is increase your costs with no guarantee you will be able to sell all the babies with means just more mouths to feed.

Luckily snakes are fairly cheap to maintain (since you already own them and their cages) - about the only thing to look at is your extra electricity costs to heat them...but you can work this as well (maybe a small space heater vs. lots of individual lights/CHE, etc.) You can also contact your electric company and get on a yearly program that keeps your bill constant.

Think about short term changes every little bit will add up in the end.

Good luck and keep us posted.
