    Power outage?
Heres a good one for ya... What happens when its -10 degrees outside... you get slapped with a big snow storm and you loose power? Obviously a couple hours isnt that big of a deal but what about a couple days? Anyone ran into this problem before? I was looking for battery back ups but the only ones I found were only going to last like 2-3 hours and they wanted like 500$ for one... Even if its not snowing outside or whatever just a normal storm that knocks out the power for a couple days? Any suggestions??

Get a gas powered generator. A lil steep but all you need is gas to keep it going.

When we lived in northern Michigan unfortunately power outtages were far too common with the winter weather up there. What we did was keep a very good supply of instant warmer packs (you can get ones that last for hours upon hours). We also had a pile of heavy work socks. When any big storm hit, we would immediately pop up the heat in each enclosure a bit and if the power went out we immediately covered every enclosure in blankets and popped one or two of the heat packs into a sock. Knot in the sock, tuck it in right beside a hide and there you go...a nice warm spot for the snake. With the big boa we had for a time there was some concern she could actually try to ingest the sock so for her I would put the sock into a large margarine container (much bigger than she could eat). I cut many diamonds out of that container so it became basically a safe heat radiating thing. Got us through a few storms with no snake the worse for the wear. :)

If you are like me on the east coast, moving down the south just increases the chance of you getting hit by a hurricane. Also knocks out power.

yeh well...there's no guarantee of a hurricane. I don't think power is the same issue as up north where ice and snow storms are pretty common.

I think a generator definitely is a safe bet.

LOL yea but lets face it I'll deal with hurricanes before I will deal with -10 and snow.

    LOL

My power was out for 3 weeks during Katrina luckily the temp here was in the 90-95 range at the time so I just opened the all the windows and rocked on.

I will definatly be investing in a small generator soon especially since power seems to go out around here with the slightest storm.

    Re: Power outage?
Well I got a pretty good solution to my problem... We have a very good power company here in Syracuse, NY and power outages in the winter arn't very common but have happened to other counties around us in the past. Last yr about 45 mins north of syracuse in Oswego they got nailed with 8ft in a couple days and there was a big power issue... I wouldnt trade the snow for anything!! I'll probably never move out of NY let alone syracuse... Well anyways back to my solution... I work for a computer company and we sell back up batteries... Just so happens my older brother is a top guy in our company and I just asked him if he has any suggestions for me... his response "Yea I got a SUA1000 (battery back up that costs around 500$) here that you can have"... "you want any money for it?".... "Naw it was given to me as a free sample and I dont use it... you can have it"... Its meant for computers and can keep one running full blast for 6hrs... he said for what im usuing it for and the fact my UTH's are on a thermostat I should be able to get a couple days out of it!! definitely beats having to buy one or a generator... My pops has a generator that can keep half the house running but its only the main floor which means id have to bring all 8 cages downstairs and that would be a pain in the arse but could be done if need be.

Just figured this would be a topic a couple people would benefit from... Thank you everyone for your ideas... Amazing what everyone can come up with to keep everything running with no problems.

As my dad always said... it aint what you know but who you know.
