Is this big enough?
http://www.reptilebasics.com/product...cat=251&page=1
Are those tubs big enough to house a fully grown ball python. Even the big females? I need to know soon because I want to put in the order this week, hopefully today for one and I need to know if that is what I need.

Re: Is this big enough?
For males maybe, but I wouldn't put a full-grown female in there. Not much room to stretch out or properly thermoregulate. I like to use the 41qt tubs for my bigger girls. They always seem like they are stretched out alongside the tub.

I agree...all my boys and juvi girls are in 32QT tubs but my breeder girls are all in 41QT (ARS Tubs) -they need the space especially for breeding (when you have 2 in there :) )

Re: Is this big enough?
Does Reptile Basics have a 41qt rack?
-
Re: Is this big enough?
Look at the CB-70 rack. It only has 3 tubs though.
Those prices are why I build my own :) I know my 6-tub 41qt rack and my 8(or 16) tub 32qt(or 15qt) rack together cost about as much as that one 3-tub rack.

Re: Is this big enough?
We have no building skills and for our first ball pythons, we don't want to risk making our own and having some kind of flaw in it and end up losing a snake.

Re: Is this big enough?
Since you really don't need a 41qt rack right now, I would go with a 32qt rack that holds both 32qt tubs and 15qt tubs(either one tub or two tubs on the shelf). That would be more flexible for you and once they outgrow the 15qt tubs, you can bump them up to the 32qts. Those will last quite awhile, and by then you can figure out which 41qt rack you want to get.

Re: Is this big enough?
No, I don't think so. The 32qt tubs would be sideways, with the long side facing out instead of the short side.
Are you set on Reptile Basics or would you look at others? I know some other manufacturers make those kinds of racks.

If you cannot build then Reptile Basics is going to have pry the best price on a CB70 rack.
Though there are some really simple plans out there where most (if not all) the cutting can be done at Home depot (lowes)...so all you would need to do is screw it together. Even find a friend you has some basic skills will save you $100s.
On the real cheap you could put them in tubs with the lids on - then tape the flexwatt right to the bottom and then stack the tubs on one of those plastic rack systems you see at Wal-mart for like $40.
Just different options depending on your budget and end goals.

Re: Is this big enough?
I'm not set on Reptile Basics. If you know of anyone else that makes good racks, that'd be great. So the racks available at Reptile Basics are not interchangable? Meaning if you have the 32qt rack the only tubs you can put on the shelves are the tubs it comes with?

Usually this is true about the tubs...but only because Rubbermaid and Sterlite change their tub designs from year to year. Adding a foot or removing a ridge that kind of thing...which slightly changes the tubs dimensions.
As for other manufactures there are several but I don't you will find a much better price. I just checked a few others for you and they were all higher then RP.

Re: Is this big enough?
Could we get the 32qt rack and use the divider they have for the 32qt rack?
http://www.reptilebasics.com/product...cat=251&page=1
I'm pretty sure that fits the 32qt rack I was going to get.

Re: Is this big enough?
Yeppers, that'd work just fine :)

The thing to take into consideration is floor space. While those are 32qt tubs, they only have 2.6 sqft of floor space because of their height. IIRC, you generally want 1sqft of floor space per 1 foot of snake to give them enough room to move about. This is why the Iris CB-70 Rack is listed as great for adults even though the tubs are only 30.6 qts. Although they have less volume, they're 3/4in shorter which translates into over 4 sqft of floor space.

Re: Is this big enough?
Then thats probably what I'll end up doing. I can get the 32qt 4tub rack, dividers and thermostat. When I use the rack and thermostat, will it run all of the shelves or can I choose to just run one level? Since I only have two snakes at the moment and am going to be using the dividers, I will only need one tub and the rack comes with four.

Re: Is this big enough?
Well right now my ball pythons are just little babies. Under 100g, so I think, according to what people here have told me, would do best in a 15qt. If my ball pythons start to outgrow this rack I can get the next size up and then have this rack available for new babies! :D

Re: Is this big enough?
Well I just put in the order for the 32qt rack, Helix DBS Proportional Thermostat, and a set of 4 dividers. The rack has belly heat.
Total: $432.16

Re: Is this big enough?
Congrats, Jay! When I graduate from UMass in the Spring, and when I get settled in at Grad School (wherever that may be), I'm going to buy that exact same rack from Reptile Basics, complete with dividers, so I can get one or two baby BPs. Definitely a Spider female....maybe Spider 100% het ghost if I can afford it :)
I think you made a good choice going with Rich. :D Let us know what you think of your rack!

Re: Is this big enough?
Will do. And this rack only gives me more of an excuse to get more snakes. I mean if the two I have now are going in one tub with dividers, why not just get a couple more. Its such a shame to let all those empty tubs go unoccupied. :D :P

Re: Is this big enough?
Well we can't get any more ball pythons till we get our own place. I think we are going to have to break down and go where we said we wouldn't go. A slightly bad part of town. Sometimes you hear gun shots and there was an instance of someone's car getting set on fire. But its cheap! lol Its like a 10 min drive from my house too.

Umm...I would do a lot of things for my snakes but putting myself and loved ones at risk is far from one of those things. :colbert:

Re: Is this big enough?
I have friends that live there and they say its fine. Just a bit spooky at night. Its also closer to work and closer to school for my fiance. We were planning on moving in there about a year ago but the roommates dropped out of the deal and we couldn't afford it by ourselves at that time. Now we can but its a matter of is that somewhere we want to live.

Re: Is this big enough?
I use the Animal Plastics Economy rack, which has 6 shelves holding either 1 32 qt or 2 15 qt sterilites. Works great for my corn snakes and juvenile BPs, I just had to add extra heat on the BP slots for their warmer basking area. $225 shipped plus about $40 for the tubs.
In fact I just got my 2nd one that's sitting there waiting to be assembled.
