    Loss of Nero
I just got off the phone with my mom, she found my little Nero stiff as a board this afternoon when she went to go check on him. She says the temps have stayed constant at 82/90 controlled by herpstat, and has been eating regularly since I left for school. Supposedly there were no signs of injury or illness. I am quite upset at the moment... barely knew the fiesty little bugger, but I miss him so much already.:rainon::crying::upset::worry::depressed:sniff::tears::dead::omg::rage:

thats odd. Did you asked about the humidity? If everything is right, I dont see what could go wrong. I would go back and check/ask the breeder who you bought it from. I know he is a good breeder, but its always best to go back and ask him. Best wishes Ben

Yea, I have shot Jeff an e-mail already and am curious as to whether he can shed some insight into the situation. I have not asked my mom what the humidity was this morning and am assuming it was within normal ranges as I had given my mom several lessons on taking care of my herps before I left, and my dad has a fair amount of experience in snake keeping. My really only guess is that something happened that they're not telling me, but seeing as I'm away at college there is little I can do from here to try and find the under-lying reason.

Oh Ben, my heart goes out to ya. Nero was a major hottie, and I know his death is especially difficult without any explanation as to why this happened. Not to mention all the other difficulties you have had to endure. I'm so sorry this happened, and I wish there was more I could do to help ya through this.

    Aww,

That sucks man - he was a little stunner.:(

Are they planning on getting a necropsy done to find out what happened? Just in case it was something you need to be extra carefull of cleaning the cage to get rid of or anything?

    Thanks everyone for the condolences!

My mom said she will take him to the vets office tomorrow to find out what they'll do. Whether he gets a full blown necropsy or not is ultimately up to her. I am lost for ideas as to the cause. I mean, I performed a very thorough cleaning of his new cage when I got it, he's been eating fine, temps were perfect and controlled by herpstat, humidity would have remained in range with my mom watching the accurite, he's been in quarantine, and from a highly respected breeder in the black blood world. Unless he had a unknown physical ailment such as injury in shipping, or something genetic, I cannot even contemplate what may have happened.

so sorry ben! how horrible for you! so sad you didn't get a chance to really get to know him before heading off for school!

i haven't really ever been around dead snakes so excuse me if this is a dumb question but... do they normally look (for lack of better word) lumpy like that? one section looks big and bloated and another looks impossibly thin. just struck me as odd.

Thanks everyone... It's been rough enough not being able to have them with me, that to hear one of them passed away after having him a month isn't easy.

They sort of flatten out as the corpse dehydrates, and as the body twists it creates a sorta lumpy look.

    Re: Loss of Nero
Just heard back from Jeff, and his thought is that something may have gone bad during a feeding, and the mouse may have caused internal damage leading to Nero's ultimate demise. It's just a theory, however it seems plausible. I am eagerly awaiting what the vet says when my mom takes his remains by there later today,

    Re: Loss of Nero
When it was all said and done, my parents didn't want to pay the $300 necropsy bill. The vet took a look over the body and said everything appeared normal from the outside, so no burns/mites/bites/under-feeding issues, but that was all he could tell without performing a necropsy. Had I been there I woulda whipped out my debit card and paid it, but I wasn't. My parent's reasoning was that the $300 wouldn't have brought a $300 snake back from the after-life and there was little reason to believe that what caused Nero's death would travel across the house (out of quarantine zone) and effect my other herps.

For once I felt helpless in the matter. I had always been the one that took care of them, but now that I'm back as a fish in the Corps, I have to rely on my parents for the semester, and that drives me bonkers.

Lots of hugs from me too Ben. It's hard enough to lose a snake, but not having a definitive answer to why it happened makes it that much worse. :(

So sorry for your loss Ben! That is a major drag :(
I don't check the blood threads very often so i have missed thid until now.

I lost my favorite snake last year and it is tough.

Maybe the $300 is better spent on a new baby?
Hang in there bro, unfortunately things like this happen with animals.
We are all pulling for you! :salute:
