What a week

Some of you are aware that my mother had to have surgery yesterday on a suspicious lump in her thyroid, so I've been in NC all week. We spent all day from 5:30 in the morning until 8 at night with breaks for lunch and dinner at the hospital.

Thankfully, it appears that it was benign, but they still took 1/2 of her thyroid. She's also recovered quite nicely. She came home today and no sooner had we walked in the door and Karl calls. The entire apartment is flooded, from a hot water heater busted.

So, I quickly pack up and head home a day early and just got in. I can't get in my kitchen or bathroom because of all the things he's moved in there. We're walking around on concrete that they've pulled up all around the furniture.

One of us will have to miss a day this week while they lay new carpet in the apartment, and paint the entire apartment. I have to miss work on Monday while they do something else with the new hot water heater (not sure what). I've been in this apartment since 1994, so you can imagine how much I've accumulated in that time.



I get to change all the rats out tonight and tend to all the herps - most all of the snakes have pooped and peed.

Then my parents' neighbor had a tree fall through their roof from their next door neighbor cutting down a tree. A large branch came crashing through the window in the kitchen as they were feeding their three young children, spraying glass on all the children. Luckily, they were unharmed, but a few choice words were shared with the neighbor. It also took out the power on the street, and the power company had to be there to change out a transformer.

It's been an eventful weekend - I'm pooped!

:hug: Good grief, Robin! That's a LOT of stress! Hang in there, hon. When it's all over, get yourself a massage or pedicure or somethin' :)

I'm so glad that your mom came through ok! That's wonderful.

Now the rest of it ... not so much. I'm sorry you have to go from one stressful situation to the next. I hope they get your apartment cleared up as quickly as possible. Good luck getting everyone cleaned up as well. :hug:

Thanks Christie! The good thing, if there is one - is that it didn't happen BEFORE my mother had surgery, because then I would have been really conflicted, and it's good that it didn't happen next weekend, while we're in AL all weekend!

That's a good way to look at it. Plus none of your animals were hurt. :yes:

I am too, I am too! I'm sure I'm going to need the distraction next week. And Karl's very excited to see you too, and super excited that we'll get to have dinner Saturday evening with you before you have to head home!

It should be a wonderful day, and a mini vacation for you that is very much deserved! I'm looking forward to getting away too, even if only for the day. My truck started breaking down last week, but got it into the shop and fixed! (I freaked a bit when it started sputtering) Now I just got to mapquest my directions. :D

Wow, that's crazy I can't believe all of that happend at once, I must have missed the post where you said you were in NC, that's where we are. Glad everything went alright with your mom.

Robin that just nutz. At least you are looking at the positive side of things. You got a nice new water heater coming, new carpet and a new paint job (all on someone elses tab :D )
Not to mention your mom is getting better and you have a mini vacation next week.

JR, I didn't tell but a few people that I was going to be out of town. My folks live in Greensboro, so I drove through Charlotte last Sunday and today.


Sean, thank you for the warm thoughts. It is very good news on my mom, we couldn't have asked for a better outcome, though I am feeling really guilty tonight that I wasn't able to spend one more day with my mom and dad. I had to rush over to the nursing home to see my grandmother before I hit the road too. She's 96, so every moment I get with her is precious! Her mind is still sharp as it was when she was was a young woman!

So, all the critters are now cleaned up - Hannah decided to paint with her poop, that was a lot of fun. Karl even said - I bet all the animals are glad that you're home!

Phew - that is the definition of eventful!

I am very glad everything was benign - one less thing to worry about. Is 1/2 the thyriod enough to admisister horomones?

I was reading the part about the busted water heater, on edge - i was so nervous something happened to your animals. So at least that did happen, and jackel DOES make an excellent point :D

my girlfriend has a bunch of tumors in her thyroid... had them removed earlier this year and is recovering really well. it's a slow process for her to regain energy... and her iron is so low she has to have injections... but she's alive and well.

i'm glad to hear your mom is too!

Biggest hugs Robin. I know this has been a high stress time for you hon and there's nothing to do but grit your teeth and hang on tight. Which you did btw with your usual admirable grit. You southern ladies really are an iron fist in a velvet glove. :D I'm just glad you got home safe. I was really worried about you driving alone that long distance with so much upsetting stuff happening. Make sure that apt complex does right by you and Karl. You're a terrific, long time tenant and deserve good treatment over this mess.

They're going to wait and see if her other half compensates, but she's already on some hormones, because she had a full hysterectomy (sp?) some 20+ years ago. She does have to be on calcium, as aparently, it also controls absorption of calcium, I believe?

Yes, I was really worried about the snakes, and Karl doesn't know how to re-set thermostas, but luckily no one got unplugged.

Thankfully, if you're going to get cancer, thyroid cancer is the most treatable, and doesn't tend to spread. My mother was a nervous wreck all week and I reminded her that of all the people we've heard stories of (and we've easily heard of over 30 cases amongst friends who knew someone with it), not one had a negative outcome.

She did awesome, didn't take any pain meds, and the nurse said she was a model patient, and they wished they could keep her, just because she was so pleasant and did everything that they told her to. She did battle a bit of nauseau from the anesthetic the first day, and they finally gave her something for it (she kept feeling better after getting sick, and they were trying to wait it out), because they didn't want her tearing stitches.

Thank you Alice! I kept hoping that it was a nightmare, but then I woke up this morning and still was facing it all! LOL

I'm going to probably spend most of today going through stuff and see what we've collected over the years that we can get rid of - so I'll just think of it as spring (or fall) cleaning. We might also get the apartment painted, but I wish they'd just move us to another apartment instead.

Jo, thank you for listening to me sob as I was driving home - I think the emotions of being forced to leave a day early really hit me when I called you. I only get a chance to see my family twice a year. Poor Karl was like "I promise I wasn't trying to get you to come home a day early!".

I basically just listened to a book on CD and friends and family were calling me the whole drive to see how I was doing and Karl was giving me updates on what was happening. Once I was actually on the road, I calmed down a bit.

Diamond and I stopped at our mid-way stop and shared a McDonald's vanilla cone (it's our little "ritual" whenever we travel to NC and back).

Waiting for the office to open now, I'll be voicing my extreme displeasure later this afternoon (this is the second water heater in 13 years that I've had flood my apartment).
