I couldn't believe what I had just heard!
So I'm sitting in at the table with my mom and her friend for breakfast at Bob Evans. We are waiting for our food when the subject of snakes comes up. Both my mom and her friend do not like snakes and something comes out of my mom's friend's mouth that for a second I thought I had heard incorrectly. "My son just let his die." I was stunned. I quickly asked what did she mean and she replied. "He grew tired of taking care of it so just stopped feeding it and let it die. It died within a month." Now of course not feeding a snake for a month will not kill it so there had to be something else going on or mistreatment in the past. I tried to get more information out of her like what kind of snake, did he turn off the heating source, ect, but she said she didn't know because she wouldn't go near it. So I'm sitting here thinking, this lady had a son who had a snake. She knew the snake was dying and she did nothing about and let him do it. I was horrified. :taz:

Ignorance in action. *sigh* To get out of bed in the morning and read this... just makes me want to cry.
I'm so sorry you had to hear it in person.
Re: I couldn't believe what I had just heard!
What a great parent that is...NOT!
Re: I couldn't believe what I had just heard!
How can you do that to anything? It could have been given away, or, you know, NOT killed.. Even their food meets a more humane end.
Re: I couldn't believe what I had just heard!
Wow...... that is tooo sad!!! I can't believe that they would just let it die. I don't understand not putting forth a little bit of effort to find a new home or someone to care for it. I agree that there must have been something else going on for a long while for it to have died within a month though. That's just too sad.......
Re: I couldn't believe what I had just heard!
all i can say is stupid people. there are a ton of them out there. me i would have told her that her and her son are just that stupid
Re: I couldn't believe what I had just heard!

The irony, of course, is she doesn't realize what this means for her when she gets into deep blue-hair territory and needs to be taken care of herself.

I am astonished at the lack of responsibility and disregard for people and animals that is seeming to be more commonplace. It's amazing that she was so flippant about the whole thing. Doesn't she realize how that reflects upon her upbringing of the child? I suppose that there really is no shame anymore.
Re: I couldn't believe what I had just heard!
My mom didn't say anything. She doesn't like snakes, but she doesn't like them to suffer either. She just sat and listened while I tried to get information from this lady about the snake and how it died. I don't think my mom wanted to start anything with her friend. I didn't want to start anything either so I said "Well he could have found someone to take it instead of killing it." and we left it at that.
Its horrible the way some parents raise thier children. My children will not even get their first pet until they show me that they are capable of handling the responsibility, be it helping out around the house, helping me with my animals, ect.

Good point! Heck I'm already sucking up to my four kidlets hoping that one of them will take care of me in my "golden years" (back up plan is to raise funds for a Home for Aged Herpers) LOL
All joking aside, this is just another sad example of a parent abducating their responsibilities to guide and raise up their children to be decent, responsible, caring and thinking adults. "It's the kid's pet, it's not MY problem" isn't the out some lazy parent should be taking and yes Christina, they should be very ashamed of their actions, but I'd put money on it that they never will be. Heck Mikey has a fish and a snake and we monitor his care of them on a daily basis. He is 6 and needs to be reminded to zip up after a bathroom trip....what in the world would make me think he should be left totally in charge of another living thing. Modelling good behaviour and being a pro-active parent certainly seems to have gone out of vogue hasn't it.

It sounds like they thought of the snake as a bug they could just squash or a rat they could exterminate. That, and/or an old computer console you can just leave to gather dust in the attic. This, quite literally, makes me feel sick.
