This is getting me very confused....
Well I setup my tub, Spartans not in it yet. I set the herpstat to 92, for what I wanted it to be, well that didn't heat it up right, so heres my problem, I set my herpstat to 103! and its still not reaching 92 inside the tub! Like seriously wtf, this is very frustrating! lol Advice anyone?

What is the temp at?
What are you using for a heating source, flexwatt?

Re: This is getting me very confused....
HOW are they set up??? WHERE are the thermostat and thermometer probes?????
1* on one is NOT necessarily 1* on the other. As an example, I have a JC that is set 103*, but b/c of the rack and where it's sitting in the room, the tubs are 94, 93 and 95 (not necessarily in that order), but it takes a 103* setting on the thermostat to get the tubs the right temp with the flexwatt as back (not BELLY) heat. I have other JCs that are set at 96* and the tubs are the correct temps.

The temps on the hot side on my digital thermometer is 84.
Yes I am using flexwatt.
The Herpstat says 102.5

I have a tub, and flexwatt taped to the bottom of the tub, thermostat probe is taped outside on the flexwatt. Thermometer probe is under the paper towel substrate. and it reads around 85

Hi,
Is the flexwatt heating up at all? Try connecting it directly to the mains for 15 minutes or so to check its not a bad connection on the flexwatt.
Don't just plug it into the mains and forget about it of course as that really isnt a good idea.

oh no, it works, its just not making the temps in the tub heat go up that much.
Theres lots of heat though.

Hi,
Is the thermostat switching on and off?

Hey,
I set it to 105 on the Herpstat, once it goes over 105 the green light shuts off, so basically there is no power going into the flexwatt untill it gets to like 104.9. Temp got bumped up to about 90, so im gonna let it run through, and lower it f I have to :)

Re: This is getting me very confused....
Hi,
I hope you meant there is power going to the flexwatt until it hits 104.9.:P
You might want to think of moving or insulating the thermostat probe. Not essential as long as the heat in the tank is correct though. Also move the thermometer probe around inside the tank as you really want to make sure the temp below the substrate is around 94 tops if possible and 92 (ish) on top of the substrate. Also this lets you make sure there are no hot spots or anything unexpected.:)
Try a few different substrates if you have a couple you can't decide between now so you know how they affect the temps - You said you were using paper towel so newspaper would be the easiest to try first.
It seems a pain but getting all this dialed in now before you put Spartan in is by far the best way to do it.

Lol yeah there is power going through,
I will change the paper towels tomorrow, as I am very tired.
I will move the probe inside tomorrow as well. The probe is taped into place with aluminnum tape on the outside of the flexwatt.
I'm gonna try to move him in Monday if everything goes well :)

Re: This is getting me very confused....
Hi,
You could try putting a layer of plastic between the probe and the flexwatt. I would sacrifice a tupperware container for this I think.
I wouldn't put the thermostat prob inside the enclosure though. That leads to more problems than it solves really. If the flexwatt is larger than the tub bottom I might however put the probe inside a small tupperware box with a couple of layers of substrate in it sitting on the overhang.
One question is the probe between the flexwatt and the tub or taped to the bottom of the flexwatt? flexwatt does give out heat more on one side than the other if I recall correctly (if I'm talking rubbish please tell me). Now I think its the ridged side that should face the tub but wait for corroboration on that.

Re: This is getting me very confused....
Maybe you can sandwich the probe in between the flexwatt and the tub. The probe may be picking up the cooler temps from the surface you have everything on and it's not working properly.
I dunno! I usually stick the tstat probe inside an empty tub in the rack and tape it down over the hotspot.

Re: This is getting me very confused....
You'll need some sort of small (short) feet on the tub so that when the flexwatt gets hot, it doesn't burn your table, chest, or whatever it's all sitting on...and when that happens, the thermostat probe, being on the outside of the flexwatt is probably sensing the room temp more than just the flex & tub temp.
Try placing the thermostat probe btwn the flexwatt and the bottom of the tub.

Re: This is getting me very confused....
Something definitely doesn't sound right. If the flexwatt is taped directly to the tub, the thermostat probe is sandwiched in between, and the thermostat says 102.5, that heat has to be going somewhere. You are reading the OUTSIDE temp on the thermometer, right? I know, stupid question, but trying to understand this. You said the thermometer probe was under the paper towel substrate, which is good. The only other thing I can think of is that either the thermostat or the thermometer is faulty. I would come up with another thermometer and check the temperature of the flexwatt itself using both the accurite and the new thermometer. That will tell you if they are both working correctly. How big is your flexwatt? (What size and how long) How big is the tub? What kind of tub is it? Its not an insulated ice chest is it???? (I'm KIDDING!!!!) Maybe get some reflectix and set the whole setup on top of it? Is there an AC vent blowing directly on the tub?
Just a bunch of random thoughts. First things I would check though is that you are reading the outside temp on the thermometer, and that the thermometer and thermostat are both working correctly.

Re: This is getting me very confused....
No, the thermometer probe is not sandwiched between the tub and flexwatt, I'm fixing it as we speak. I'll keep all of you guys/girls posted :D

Re: This is getting me very confused....
Okay! I did everything! temps are 91 warm, 78-80 cool (is this okay?) The herpstat temp is at 106 probe is sandwiched between the flexwatt and tub. Humidity is my problem now, it's either too high or too low. Arg.

Re: This is getting me very confused....
That's weird. On my helix's I only have to set it to say 90 on my bloods enclosure and I'm getting 88 degrees inside the tub for his hot spot.
Same with the ball python. Only I'm using the helix on the cool side. Its set at 85. And I get 83 degrees steadily inside the tub.
So whichever side I run it on. I only set it 2 degrees above what I want it to be inside the tub. And it works great.
