Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Okay I get that electronic things have a finite sort of existance....I really do get that. Today however I'm confused! I've either ticked off the Great God Of All Things Electronic or I have a poltergiest.
I get up this morning, nice morning, hot coffee in hand I sit down at the computer and fire it up....pretty much like every morning. ZZZZFFFTTTTT! ZZZZFFFTTTTTT! goes my monitor! Then it proceeds to go black but the power button light goes on and off and on and off and on and off. Somehow in my sleep fogged mind I realized this was perhaps not such a good thing really so I pull the power plug. Having taken a moment to slug down a bit of coffee and hoping that in some way I've misunderstood this situation I plug the monitor back in and it proceeds to do the psychotic on/off thing for a bit more time. I determine, after a few more guzzles from my coffee cup, that my monitor has gone to the Great Computer Junkyard in the Sky. Luckily (and cheapo me that never tosses out anything) I have an old, spare monitor tucked in my closet.
Lugging the stupid heavy thing down the stairs I set it up and whammo I'm back in business. Pretty good all in all I figure.
Well later I decide I should really take some pictures of Lynn's baby boa we are snake sitting for her. So I grab my digital camera and flick it on......and I flick it on....and...umm....ON! Nada, nothing, bupkis! So I figure okay, we just need us some new batteries. I proceed to steal said batteries from various sources since having a pack of batteries in my house untouched is beyond anyone's capacity to understand. Again....nada...dark screen...BLECH. So I dig around and come up with the A/C adapter which I know works...I use it all the time to save on batteries for pictures around the house. You'd think this would work wouldn't you.
Well nope....apparently I've also killed the camera today. Personally I've determined that I have a poltergiest and am trying to figure out how long it takes to become a Catholic so I can call a bloody priest before this thing kills my precious coffee maker (which funny enough hasn't been working all that well lately either and I've had to resort to *feels faint* instant coffee!) :O

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
I warned you about the coffee pot - I sure am glad that I live way down south in GA - I don't think I'd want to be anywhere in the state of OH when that thing goes!
-
Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
oh, poor jo! how old is your cam? is it still under warranty?
-
Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Robin, thank goodness there is always instant coffee...it may save this state or at least the northern part from the disaster that would befall them should I be without my morning coffee for even one day!
No hon, the camera's an older one so it was likely just ready to go but boy it didn't have to go today did it? I swear I'm scared to touch the DVD in case it up and kicks the bucket next!

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
I can't function without coffee either, so best of luck on that one!!! (I had to settle for pop in the morning for caffeine because I can't find or even recall if I packed my coffee!!!)
Fix for 98% of all coffee maker issues: Fill the pot half to 75% full of white vinegar. Put an empty filter in the top, run the vinegar through 3-8 times - change filter if necessary, then run just water through with a new filter twice.

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Just one of those days.... but if you don't mind I'm not inviting you over any time soon. :giggle:

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Lordy, don't you know the FIRST rule of moving....
"The coffee maker and all related supplies to include filters, coffee, back up standby instant coffee, back up filters, jug of water just in case of bad pipes, back up for the back up coffee, sugar, cups and stirring utensils are to be packed in the moving van's front passenger area PRIOR to anyone moving ANYTHING OUT OF THIS HOUSE!"
:D

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Oh...on a related note...the cell phone won't charge either...light comes on but apparently nobody's home on that front either. I think I need to go hide under the bed. :(
-
Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Haha, except that with the aquarium, the fish, the jugs of tank water, the snake, the boyfriend, and the x-large tim hortons cup that I had there was no room for the coffee!!!!
The tea made it though, and I've gotten used to drinking that because we don't have a coffee machine at work :)

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Did you maybe have an electrical disturbance in the area?? Because that is a *lot* of electronic devices to stop working all at the same time.
Last summer at work some people doing work for cable hit a line and it caused a large (but quick) flash and a good disturbance. People for a 2 block radius had ovens, microwaves, phones, cellulars, tvs, etc all stop working randomly and we were liable to pay for all the replacements :)

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Oh you poor thing. I would suggest going to bed early. Try not to touch anything on the way..... (you don't have an electric toothbrush do you? - if so maybe just a quick rinse will be good)

Well we have had a lot of thunderstorms and so forth the past few days but only the computer was plugged in to a wall socket. The camera was sitting as usual on top of the computer desk and the cell phone was nearby. Granted all three are older pieces of equipment so that may just be it and it's just a coincidental thing but I'm still pondering the whole call a priest and have the nasty poltergiest booted out of the house! LOL
Anyone have a clue on the hourly rate for an exorcist? :D
The microwave did suddenly go out last night and I was complaining to my husband about that needing replaced when he mentioned (in that smug manner that husbands have) that I'd apparently knocked the plug out of the wall while moving the microwave stand.

Shame on Mike. He should have just told you to go relax and have a cup of coffee while he looked it over to see if he fix it. Then taken the time to have a beer. Finally, plug the thing in and let you know what a stellar repairman he is.

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
:lmao: OMG!!!!! Jo, how funny....but FWIW Most electronic appliances are built with planned obsolescence in mind. We've become such a "throw away" WORLD (not just society) that almost all products don't live as long as they're capable, and the "death" is deliberately built in.
I.e.....cars....are the best example. Until Japan, most newer American cars wouldn't last 10 yrs, but all the older tanks are still on the road and now they're "Classics".
Good luck!
< Soooo glad I don't drink coffee!!! >:P :P

Jo, I'm so sorry! But if it makes you feel any better, I seem to have your poltergeist's brother/sister hanging around my house. I've had all kinds of trouble with my computer lately, up to and including a very nice, expensive monitor being hauled off by the sanitation dept last week. Most recently, my battery backup unit fell victim. Over the past several months, my washing machine quit (replaced with new one), my dryer quit (repaired), my refrigerator quit (repaired), my microwave's digital display went nuts (has apparently fixed itself for the time being), and my water heater's pilot light blew out AGAIN just yesterday! Oh, and one of the two batteries I have for my digital camera died. If you find a good priest or exorcist, after he finishes at your house, would you send him my way???????
Steve

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Jo, I'm really sorry you've had to deal with all this stuff in one day. BUT, I was laughing so hard at your descriptions that I had tears in my eyes. Hope everything gets fixed or replaced soon. (BTW, I have an old keyboard in my closet - I'll use it sometime . . . )

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Ouch! I would stay away form the refriderator, washer/dryer and anything electronic for today! :)
-
Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
No problemo Steve, I'll send him your way once we boot out our electronics killing little ghostie! :)
Alice, my husband may laugh at me and maybe I do have too much scots blood in me but I strip anything electric before it goes out to the curb. I have this big box with tons of power cords, keyboards, USB thingies, etc. It's amazing how many times either I or a friend has needed something and I've saved money digging through my treasure trove of leftover bits and pieces.
I seem to have runs of this. When we moved into this apartment I killed two refridgerators in the space of 10 days. :(

Oh no... Now I'll have to be wary of you... One of my mottos in life is, "Never tick off the little Scottish woman"...
I still can't find my coffee... Tea is not doing it in the morning...

 I've got a box in my closet that sounds like it's a twin of yours!

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Well I'm only half-Scots, Adri on my maternal side, the paternal is Ukranian. :)
Hey Alice we should meet somewhere and see who has the oldest power cord. If anyone needs one for a computer the size of your livingroom that can play solitaire....give me a call! LOL

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
got a lap top keyboard in there??? I had a bad electronics day yesterday too... My boyfriend decided not to look where he was stepping, trip on something, and spill an entire beer on my lap top keyboard...
Thought lappy was completely dead, but this morning it decided to half work on my one last attempt at it.

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Sorry hon, with 4 kids around I've never considered a laptop as being safe in our home LOL. Hope you get yours working again. Did you about kill the bf? LOL
-
Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
No... I didn't even snip at him... I just quietly sat by myself disassembling it and wiping off the beer spots that he missed. I break stuff all the time, and it usually ends up being his stuff just by fluke so I couldn't really say much... NOW if only this could have happened *after* I'd finished paying for it I wouldn't really care at all.

Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Im sorry to hear that Joanna. I dont think I would know what to do if I were you. I'd probably go back to sleep or something.
I would suggest looking into a surge protector. Thats odd how things just fail like that.
Good luck and hopefully everything will work out better. Just one of those days.
-
Re: Hmm Who Did I Tick Off?
Thanks dear. I'd have thought it was a surge issue but the only thing that was actually plugged in that failed was the computer and it's monitor and they are on a very good surge protector. The camera and the cell phone were simply sitting as they always do on the top of my computer desk (it's one of those cupboard type ones that you can shut the double doors and it's all tucked away nicely). Probably just time for me to replace some of the aging electronics anyways. Why is it though when your digital camera dies, you're suddenly struck with an incredible urge to take pictures of everything!
