Pastel Died....

So I went in to check on my pastel last night and when I peaked in his tub I noticed he was laying in what I thought was an awkward position. I opened his tub completely and reached in to touch his tail, thinking he would move but he didn't. I lifted him and he was stiff. I couldn't believe it. I called my wife into the room and she was as shocked as I was. She said she was going to talk to her vet about doing a necropsy. I am just still in disbelief. My first morph, my pride and joy, second only to my first bp I've ever owned. I had big plans for this guy, Had 3 women ready for him to breed to this year and then this happens. I dont really know what to say about it. Looks like I'm back to square one, with only my normals. I quickly quarantined all of the other snakes, every one in a separate room (which was hard to find room for them all!) and I'm going to have a vet check all of them (pending the necropsy) I'm just really bummed out. I was going to try and save up to get a ready to breed female pastel also to switch out with one of the ladies he was going to pair up to this fall. Now I'm not really sure where I'm going to go as far as projects. I was currently heading towards super pastels and now that he's gone I'm not sure if I should continue heading in the same direction or if I should consider possibly saving a bit more and getting one that is a little more expensive. **sighs** Either way it's a big set back and a horrible disappointment. The mood around the house is horrible today :-\ Just thought I'd let everyone know so you can appreciate how much your babies really mean to you...:(

Do you think there are any breeders in your area that you could borrow a male from? or send your females to? That's always an option so you don't completely miss out on this season. Good luck with the future plans. Don't give up.

Nathan, I've thought about loaning some of my girls out, I just haven't made up my mind on that yet. I guess I'm just a little worried because these girls are my babies and I'm not just willing to let them go to anyone. Besides, the nearest breader is Bruce Eisenmenn, and if anyone thinks I'd let him near my snakes they're outta their mind. The closest breeder after that is outside of charleston sc, and I dont really know them well enough **sighs** I guess we'll see what happens.

J.R., I'm so sorry to read about this. You and your wife must be just in shock. I think when they pass like this with no warning it's best to get that necropsy done. It's harsh to have to lose more money but it's best to know what occurred and whether any risk is present for the rest of the snakes.

Sorry your snake died.:( I know how much that sucks when a treasured animal dies. My dog of 13 years died on my last birthday.:eek:

I am so sorry for your loss, I just got my little guy about a month ago and I couldn't imagine losing him... My prayers are with you, don't lose hope! You have lots of time!

I'm SO sorry and sad to read this. I can only imagine what a blow this must have been. I hope the necropsy offers some sort of clue and closure to the whole, sad mess. Don't feel rushed to make any future decisions about buying or breeding. Let your hearts heal. :hug:

Sorry to hear about your loss, I can fully understand the glum feeling around the house. I know he will be hard to replace.

Sorry to hear about your pastel :( ... hopefully your others will be OK. How old was he? I think it would be worth the necropsy to see if they can find anything.

We had him since may. He was a little under a year old when we got him.

Sorry for your loss. My first ball python passed unexpectedly too. This was a long time ago. About 12 years ago. But I still remember how upset I was. The good news is male pastels aren't that expensive, even a breedable one. Your season isn't completely ruined.

I am sorry that this happened!! I hope your girls will be okay, and let us know what you find out. I know how hard it is to suddenly lose a family member like that, we had a dog last year that passed away without warning. :( And hopefully your breeding season will turn out okay. My thoughts are with you and your family!!

Wow thats terrible, i would like to know what happened my self. Please keep us updated....

We took the snake into her work and the necropsy is going to be done first thing monday morning so we'll be able to let you know then. Thanks to everyone for being so nice. Hopefully I'll be able to work something out so this year wont be a complete loss.

Oh, J.R... :hug: I'm sorry about your boy. I hope everything gets resolved and that the necropsy can give you an idea of what happened. I'm sure your girls will be just fine. Keep us posted, okay?

Oh my gosh I'm sorry! I lost my first BP years ago and the shock is just terrible! It happens so sudden at times. It actually took a while for me to consider getting another snake. I hope it doesn't come across as morbid but if you could keep us updated on the necropsy(sp?). I really am interested in some of these causes.

I think you handled it very well, as far as removing the other snakes and putting them into quarantine.

Bummer man i know the feeling i had my rtb just die about 2 months ago it sux i dont care what people say. My friends were like its just a snake but i love all my animals equally so its not just a snake to me.
