Are Ball pythons illegal in New York City?
-
Re: Illegal
yes they are
I remember reading it somewhere, and remember the sean casey animal rescue couldn't adopt a bp within the 5 boroughs, but now all I can find is things about the large pythons

YES!!!!
In fact it is a felony to sell one in any of the Five Boroughs. You can't have a Ferret either.
Both of these are harmless creatures, but what can you do?

I was looking for the document to back it up, just because this comes up so often... of course I couldn't find it, but I started reading about the ferret ban. If there reasoning wasn't so ridiculous it would be hysterical! The made ferrets out to be these vicious beasts capable of killing a child... not really I'm exaggerating, but it was damn close to that.

Re: Illegal
Yeah I was looking into getting some ferrets and making them into guard ferrets... I sure no intruder would weant to fight them suckers off...
Can you imagine them biting your ankles. OUCH
What weird laws... I agree... kinda silly!
I wonder why you cant have a ball... i can understand a giant but a BP... ODD!

HEALTH DEPARTMENT STATEMENT ON
MAINTAINING BAN ON FERRETS IN NYC
The New York City Board of Health voted unanimously today at its quarterly meeting to establish in New York City a list of animals which are prohibited as pets in New York City. The Board of Health is the official body authorized to enact the New York City Health Code. The list voted on today includes ferrets, which have been banned as pets under the Health Code's provision prohibiting ownership of wild animals (Section 161.01) since 1959. Public safety is the significant concern.
Ferrets are known for their unpredictable behavior, and they are prone to vicious, unprovoked attacks on humans. Ferret attacks reported nationwide over time have become notorious for their severity and capriciousness, causing serious injuries to some infants and young children in particular. In New York City's multiple dwelling residences, which are not natural habitats of ferrets, a ferret could crawl through holes in walls or travel along risers or ducts to other apartments, with potentially tragic consequences for the neighbor of a ferret owner.
Given careful consideration of what is known now, it would be irresponsible from a public safety perspective to allow a ferret to be kept as a pet in New York City.

Uhh... so pretty much the only pets you SHOULD be able to keep based on "natural habitats" in NYC would be rats, mice, cockraoches, and house gnomes...
EDIT: just another reason why i love Texas! :salute:

Re: Illegal
Bans on harmless animals are so idiotic. I can understand that yes, ferrets do bite. Well so does that old lady's pet poodle that is kept in that multiple dwelling residence which just so happens to not be that poodle's natural enviroment. :taz:

Re: Illegal
I was just making sure.... It is ridiculous!!!! I mean they can't do anymore damage than a dog. I work with ball pythons at my volunteer job. In fact one of the them is very special to me, her name is Suzy. Me and her are best buds. It's a shame they are illegal over here.... Thank god I'll be going of to college in a 2 years. I plan on going to the University of Pennsylvania and studying to be a vet. :D :D :D

Re: Illegal
Maybe the ball pythons are banned because they are enveloped in a ban to all pythons? I think that would make much more sense.
