Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
I just want to know what you prefer to have would you prefer to buy a Male or Female? Why?

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
Depends on what your goals are. If you think you'll want to breed one day, then I'd be picking up females that can be growing before you decide what you want your first project to be.

If you don't plan on breeding, I don't think that I would have a preference one way or the other. I don't notice much difference in temperment.

One might choose a male if they don't want quite as girthy or as long a snake as a female.

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
I'm not big on breeding so I prefer females since I prefer larger snakes. I would go with a green anaconda but I would be on my own handling it. I feel those are snakes better left to the people who have experienced help.

No, sorry i wasn't asking for myself and my plans. I know what my plans are. I just want to know what everyone elses opinions for themselves are.
    Thanks for the advise though.

I was using "you" in general terms.

For myself, as far as normals, it will be females. For morphs, depends again what my plans are - if I decide to do bumblebees, I have a male pastel, so I'd want a female spider, or a female cinnie for pewters.

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
When I bought Auryn, I had no intentions of breeding and males tend to be smaller than females--so I went with a male. I'm still in college and it would be easier, I felt, to house a 1-2 year old male BP (he'll be 2 around when I graduate :) ) than a female that might get larger.

That, and at the time, a male Pastel was affordable for me, so I was able to have a morph as a first BP--where a female morph was way out of my price range!

When I'm in grad school, I might get Auryn a girlfriend...Honeybees are my dream morph, but that $7,000 price tag is a little out of my reality zone. So, he might get a Spider girlfriend and there might be some breeding down the road for me. It'll take awhile to get a female reared up, though :) Besides...I miss having a littler snake around--Auryn's getting so big!

So, I guess if you've got breeding plans, females in abundance are preferred with a speckling of studly males. If you just want a pet--females are a little larger than males, so I guess it depends on what you want in a snake?

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
well i personally think females are always better... why you ask? because when we picked up our first ball the breeder told us... "an adult male is really hard to find a home for, if you find you need to rehome it, but an adult female is always in demand."

there really is no difference, unless you're talking about breeding and size, but if i had to pick, i would pick females only because they get bigger

Females because I am too male-heavy... hahaha ;)

But actually when I think about my collection in particular, most of my males are more outgoing than my females.

Right now I'm going to be at 6.7 and after this breeding season I should be at about 6.10 or 11. So far my preference with female's is their eventual size annd of course I will be needing them for breeding in the future. Big female's are super cool!!

    Very good point Aleesha!

I also agree with Robin that it depends what your plans are and what you already have. If recessive, I try to always go for the female first because she has to grow up a couple of years before being ready to breed. If co-dom, I tend to buy the male. But then again, if a particular snake catches my eye, all that good advice goes right out the window! :D

In the end, male or female, morph or normal...they all produce snake poop. So I figure since you'll be picking that up for a pretty good number of years....choose the snake you personally love! :D

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
correct me if I am wrong, but aren't males more likely to go off feed for periods of time as adults than females are? I believe it's part of their breeding instincts to fast...... so females might be a bit easier on the nerves :)

I think I am preferring males....I like a more slender body shape.
This is all just aesthetics talking....I don't have enough experience with keeping snakes to have any other basis for preference :P

my male BP is quite outgoing though...that was an interesting observation someone posted earlier.

I'd probably choose a male since, like someone said, they stay smaller than the fems.

Boy, people sure like making polls around here...not that its a bad thing; just making an observation (shields head from thrown produce).

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
i posted female but i really think that it just depends on the type of snake you are buying and for what purpose. if i was getting a recessive type of snake like albino or cinny then i would prefer a female but when it comes to codom and dom like spiders or pastel i like males

Lots and lots of female normals! And lots and lots of male morphs :) That way you can breed the same morph to few female normals :D

Amen to both. Both aspects came into play when selecting our last 3 snakes, but honestly, choosing the snake we loved the most weighed more heavily. =)

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
It really doesn't matter to me rather it's male or female since we have no plans on breeding....just in owning a pet snake. But, if I were to breed, I would want a female, I think.

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
I went with 'male' because I wanted a smaller snake. (Although his daddy was above average for a male, and Salzedo seems to be living up to those genetics!) Also, I do not plan to breed. I lucked out and got one with a wonderful personality! :) I've never even heard him hiss... although I am curious to hear it!

That's what I was going with. I'm hoping to get my first co-dom in the spring and I definitely want it to be a male. I have a little girl right now, hopefully I can grow her up, and possibly pick up another bigger girl in the summer.

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
When I went to get a ball python I wanted a girl, but I ended up with a boy due to the females selling fast for breeding...and my male snake is TONS more adventurous then my female (who I got later).

And seeing as how I am not up to breeding snakes just yet, I don't care much for more females.

i found with my snakes, all of them for that matter not just the balls, that the males tend to be better dispostioned. except for my lrgest female ball shes such a sweet baby girl.

I originally wanted a male, and thought I bought a male. Now it appears she is a female. Size wise a male seemed more appealing, but I realized that should she outlive me then yes, females would be easier to rehome. I always think long term, I have never rehomed any of my animals but with a BP's very long lifespan planning is important.

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
Being my first snake, I did my research based on what I had for housing, and what exactly I was looking for, I knew I wanted a ball python after all of my research and gathered that being my first snake keeping experience, I wanted to go the smaller route and get a male.

Re: Male vs Female... Which do you prefer?
Since I like to breed my animals it all depends on what I need. But chances are if it's a co-dom combo it'll be a boy, and if it's a recessive gene I may just go a head and get the girl. I intend to breed my blood girl and I'm going to do the same with any other blood girls I get but what I like to do for them is just buy the girls as babies, raise them up, and when they're nearly old enough to breed I'll buy the boy.
