Advice on racks..

Hey guys, it's been a few days since I've been here. Work is so overwhelming that by the time I get home, I am passed out.

So anyway, I just added another female pastel to the group =). She's a beauty. I have been looking at racks on RBIplastics as a self birthday gift and was wondering if I'd be able to get away with buying a 4 tub rack that is big enough for the snakes I have from now till adulthood. I mean does anyone else do that? Like buy a 41qt 4-tub or whatever rack and just place 15qt tubs when they are small, and go bigger when they get big?

I haven't done what you are talking about (though I am sure it could work) but....Reptile Basics has a rack that has dividers in it. So you can cut a 30QT tub down to (2) 15QT tubs...this might be worth looking into.

A bp can live in a 41 qt tub for its entire life. I have the 15qt 8 tub rack , i have some 600 gram snakes still in there, because they love the tight space they eat alot better. But my bigger snakes are in a 32 qt rack, and they do well in there.

With the racks from RBI, are the flexwatts attached to the racks, or are they given like how they are when you order them individually and attach them to the tub? That's what I'm also confused about as well.

And... Would they eventually be in 41qt sized tubs because I remmber reading during my research that putting bps in a 41 qt was only preference. I may be wrong. I'm just asking to see if I should buy a 41qt sized rack. Thanks guys!

It depends on which rack your getting from him... But when your on the website it should tell you. The 40qt tubs are prefered for the biggest females.

It is 32 qt tubs from what I see... has nice heating on it, and I would use the dividers for my 2-3 month old snakes that I have at the moment. I would increase them in size as they grow older. I would assume it would last me 2-3 years.

I don't see any 40qt racks on the site. If you could show me that'd be awesome. =)

Why? Unless its a huge female or for breeding. They dont really seem to care for room to play with you know.

i would go with the 32 qt rack for now. and make sure you get a thermostat as well....

I have a ranco atm, but I am about to get a helix grounded as well and use the ranco as my back up. :)

So I'll be going for the 32 qt I guess. Is that suitable for an adult male? I'll be using the dividers for them so that it can be made smaller. I'm so excited haha...

As this is the one I recommended to you...I have to agree that it would work perfectly for you :D . BTW...most of my snakes are in a 32QT rack.

thank you. this thread helped me decide what rack to purchase as I am going from no bp's to three within a few months. I could also put the hatchling in the individual bins as long as they have plenty of hiding places couldn't I? Or would getting a divider for the first 6 months be a better option?

If your going with the larger tubs (32qt) you can use dividers or provide more hides the choice is yours as long as you know you may run into a problem with feeding(too much space and stress)... I personally believe in the more space the better. I just got 2 07 hatchlings and I have them in 66qt tubs right now...2 hides, a water dish, and something to climb on can tighten things up real quick. I know a lot of people on here dont believe balls are climbers but I think differently. I provide all of my snakes with something to climb on and all of them use it... even the past couple nights ive been checking in on my little ones and theyre all over the place in their tubs. All of my other balls that are 600g+ are in 96qt tubs and within the next 6 months ill be building them new cages(4x2x1.5). I just purchased a book off the internet with plans on how to build a custom cage and they should look real sharp and be nice homes for my balls to spend the rest of their lives in.

I only have 2 snakes at the moment but I bought the 6 slot economy plastics rack from animal plastics. I know that i'll be picking up more snakes in the future, so I figured that I would just go ahead and pay the extra money for the rack now instead of buying tubs that might not be able to fit a certain kind of rack. The system that I have now houses 6 32qt tubs, or 12 15qt tubs, and of course you can interchange them out as needed. It's also heated in the back with heat rope that works awesome. It's really nice cause now I can use the unused tubs as extra storage space too ^_^.

i really liked the AP economy rack, but the only problem is it isn't all inclosed. so you have to keep the room at 82˚ or else you won't have a good gradient.

Okay, just got home from work. So the one that I am looking at... would I get the heating belly, or back?

I'm assuming belly, am I correct?

I am looking at the same rack and I personally would go with belly heat... I could be wrong but I just feel that it would be better to help control heat and humidity in each individual tub. I'm sure that someone with more "rack" experience will come along with an answer. Im also thinking of getting the iris 12 tub shoe box rack to stack on top of the sweater box rack. Planning for the future. :D

I remember reading on one website that was selling racks that some people prefer back/indirect heat because they fear a short circuit or over heating. i do think you are correct on the belly heat though- isn't a certain room temperature needed if you do go the indirect/back heat method to ensure proper temperatures?

I think the certain room temp is needed if u use an open air rack like the ones from Freedom Breeders. With enclosed racks like reptile basics I think belly heat or back heat is okay. but im not 100% positive on that. my personal choice is belly heat. Adam could tell u about the Freedom Breeder racks though.

GOOD LORD.. that's a lot of space.. i sure hope that's a big dish and a big climbing branch.. because the hides would need to be fairly small for a baby..
