Finally! On August second our labradoodle (Sophie) had her very first litter of puppies! There are 2.0 blacks, 2.1 chocolates, 1.1 cream, and 0.1 white! They just opened their eyes and began walking around the other day. And of course they all have names.
Heres Sophie with all 8 pups.

Re: Puppies!!!!
I love them, they are all too cute!!! Puppies grow WAY too quick though....got my husband a pure black lab pup for valentines day this year and already he is 70 lbs., but still all puppy LOL!!! I love the little white one. I had a question for you out of curiosity. Do labradoodles really not shed like people claim?

Labradoodles do shed, but not nearly as much as most other dogs. It also depends on their coats. The wavier and more poodle-like the coat, like Vinnie the dad, the less shedding and the more lab-like the coat, like Sophie the mom, the more shedding. But we have 3 labradoodles, 2 with lab-like coats and the three of them combined dont shed even as much as my friends single lab.

So they don't have qualified, responsible homes to go to yet?

At 2-1/2 weeks old? No we have not found homes for all of them yet, and these are not "disposable" dogs if thats what you are getting at. They have been bred for temperment and a reduced shed, reduced allergen coat. We are selling them with a strict spay/neuter contract, genetic and health guarantees, and offer lifetime re-homing if needed.
We are also working with each interested party to make sure that our dogs will be placed in the best possible situations. We have already turned down a couple "can I buy all your females?" offers.
If anyone has any questions about Labradoodles, or our breeding, please feel free to contanct us - check our website www.sunsetlabradoodles.com for contact info.
Thanks,
Neil

Thanks Jason. They have their eyes open and are starting to move all over the place.

Hey, I'm just curious, if you breed them for all these wonderful qualities, why don't you allow buyers to breed the puppies. I understand about the people asking for all the females -- that sounds like they have a puppy mill. But if a person came to you wanting to eventually breed for the same reason you did, would you still want them to follow that strict contract?

It would have to be the right person in the right situation. We work with a small group of family breeders in the Denver area, and the breeder that brought us into the group only did so after feeling totally comfortable with our intentions. In fact we are the only ones outside of her immediate family that she has granted breeding rights to.

I see. That's responsible. I was just curious, because it's kind of contradictory.. but there are A LOT of people with the wrong intentions when it comes to dog breeding, so I'm glad you're screening so thoroughly.

Re: Puppies!!!!
I like that you provide health guarantees, but the hip dysplasia one bothers me a bit...accurate hip films can only be done on animals over two years of age, but you only guarantee them to be free of it for the first 24 months of life. Wouldn't it look better for you to guarantee them for say the first 36 months?
Out of curiosity, what were their parents hip scores?

Re: Puppies!!!!
Also, the longer version of Lab is spelled "Labrador".

A woman work has a Goldendoodle, huge boy, very friendly but man oh man would i not want to be grooming that boy.

That is a good point about the age, it might be better to extend to 30 or 36 months. We based the 24 months on input from other breeders we work with. I also found this on the OFFA website regarding the reliability of preliminary scans.
"A recent publication* compared the reliability of the preliminary evaluation hip grade phenotype with the 2 year old evaluation in dogs and there was 100% reliability for a preliminary grade of excellent being normal at 2 years of age (excellent, good, or fair). There was 97.9% reliability for a preliminary grade of good being normal at 2 years of age, and 76.9% reliability for a preliminary grade of fair being normal at 2 years of age. Reliability of preliminary evaluations increased as age at the time of preliminary evaluation increased, regardless of whether dogs received a preliminary evaluation of normal hip conformation or HD. For normal hip conformations, the reliability was 89.6% at 3-6 months, 93.8% at 7-12 months, and 95.2% at 13-18 months. These results suggest that preliminary evaluations of hip joint status in dogs are generally reliable. However, dogs that receive a preliminary evaluation of fair or mild hip joint conformation should be reevaluated at an older age (24 months).
*Corley, EA, et al. Reliability of Early Radiographic Evaluation for Canine Hip Dysplasia Obtained from the Standard Ventrodorsal Radiographic Projection.
JAVMA. Vol 211, No. 9, November 1997."

Both sire (Vinnie) and dam (Sophie) came back from OFFA as good. The doctor that did Vinnies x-rays thought in his opinion his should be excellent, but it came back as good.

Do we have it mis-spelled on the website somewhere? Guess I should run spellcheck before I publish ...

Re: Puppies!!!!
Yup, it's mispelled in a couple of places.
Glad to see you guys are doing things right. It's rare and refreshing amongst dog breeders.
I talked to a woman recently who to wanted to breed her Yorkie with bilateral luxating patellas and when I pointed out that he was not the best candidate for a stud, she told me scornfully "Well honey, it's not like he's registered". *rolls eyes*

Yeah, here is Vinnie, his nickname is Chewbacca for good reason. He has a very low shed coat, but we have to get him trimmed evey now and then. Some people really like the "overgrown" labradoodle look, but it gets to be too much and off to the groomer he goes.
