Question about a custom rack...
Lets say I wanted to make a custom rack.. but only one place for a tub.. do you think that would work? instead of having the hassle of a lid and keeping it locked with clips and what not? Has it ever been done before? I'm planing on doing that and as I get more I build onto it.. I honestly think it would be better but its just an opinion. What do you guys/girls think?
Re: Question about a custom rack...
*Me* personally, would just build like a 3 tub rack.

HAHA yeah I know for sure I;m getting more BPs I absolutely love the little guys, I really want to start breeding soon, maybe in 3 years? Who knows.. but yeah I may even go with a 3 tub rack, but it seems like a hassle if I only have 1 sanke for now, I can always do some construction :)
Re: Question about a custom rack...
My racks are custom made and my tubs fit snug in the racks. They don't have lids and make it easy for feeding and cleaning. All I have to do is slide out the tub and there it is! I use flexwatt on the back of the racks so that the back end of the tubs sit on the flexwatt which is powered by a thermostat. It works great and I've never had any of my snakes escape!

So you don't keep the flexwatt underneath but behind? Like on the back? I don't understand, can you please post a pic?

here's my rack...

do tell you the truth it's not worth it for one snake. i had 4 snakes when i built my rack and i knew i had 5 on there way from the breeder. so for one snake i would stick with the tub. unless you know you will be getting more soon. to heat and whole rack for one tub is kind of pointless. not to mention the costs....
Re: Question about a custom rack...
I was trying to post a pic but am having trouble figuring out how to post one. I put the flexwatt on the shelf in the back so the bottom back of the tub sits on it. Any suggestions on how to post a pic? lol

Re: Question about a custom rack...
I think I just want to make like a 1 tub rack just for now out of some ply wood, I think its the whole lid idea with the tub by itself, I don't want my snake to get out. I still don't understand where this flexwatt goes, i see it on kagez but ill hopefully get things sorted out, new herpstat and flexwatt coming soon :)
Re: Question about a custom rack...
flexwatt justs gets taped to the bottom of the shelf and the tub sits on top of it. heat rises and will heat the tub.
flexwatt+herpstat+tub=happy snake

YAY! I'm so excited :D My neighbor is an electrician well he's basically a guy who can do anything so he can help me build a nice rack so my little guy won't get out... my moms gonna hate this idea..
Re: Question about a custom rack...
I've had my snake in a tub for a little over a month now, no clips and she hasn't gotten out. It doesn't have any sort of locking device to close it either, just snaps downs. While its a good thing you are trying to take precautions so your snake won't get out, you don't need a rack to do that.
Re: Question about a custom rack...
On the first rack that I built, I included a rheostat (lamp dimmer) on each level, so that I could "tweak" the temp for each tub, or turn a level off completely.
I kind of agree with the others about building at least a 3 slot rack. You know what else? If it takes a while to get more snakes, you'll have built in storage for supplies and a clean tub ready to go. On cleaning day, just pull the snake, slip him into your clean tub, then take your time cleaning the dirty tub.

Re: Question about a custom rack...
Racks are excellent and save me quite a bit of space. Another benefit is that it makes feeding easier for me as I have quite a few snakes.
Re: Question about a custom rack...
If your doing your own construction and building it out of MDF or Melamine, you will be able to make a three tub rack out of a sheet of it anyway. Its doesn't take much more time. Noone says you have to fill the other spots....but you know you will. :) It will be easier and look nicer to do it now then add on later.
Re: Question about a custom rack...
Why go to the expense of time and supplies for just one? If you're going to only have one tub, you can tape the flexwatt to the bottom, put some plastic cane tips on the 4 corners for feet and leave it on a table/shelf/chest of drawers. If you're going to build a rack, you might as well go for a min. of 3.
Will look nicer, and you KNOW you're going to be buying more critters, so why go to the hassle of "adding on"???? Just my :2cent: .
I NEED more rack space and size variability. Would LOOOOOOOVE to be in your shoes...would be building at least a 5 or maybe even a 7 drawer-er. :D

Re: Question about a custom rack...
Does anyone know how much a sheet of MDF or Melamine is? And where can I find it?
Re: Question about a custom rack...
Just about any home building supply store would have the sheets. Lowes, Home Depot...that sort of store.
Sorry, can't provide the prices.
I was looking at and pricing sheets of plexiglass and the metal stripping in order to build tanks for my big boas or a burm but I think I'll invest in APs or something else instead.
Re: Question about a custom rack...
I still only have 1 bp and I just built an 11 slot rack...go big or go home :P .
