    adult olive pics
just thought I'd post pics of my adult female olive. she's about 4 1/2 years old now and growing nicely. As some of you may have seen, I was trying to find some breeders that I might be able to get a male from, but the more I think about it, I'm not sure I want to wait as long as it would take to raise a male up...

so I was thinking, the best thing to me would be if I could find someone that breeds them that would be interested in taking her for a breeding loan... anyone??

thank you, I had also heard that it was very easy for them to become overweight, and I was curious to see what you all thought about her weight... too much??

    thanks...

I know nothing about them... But she certainly doesn't appear overweight, she looks perfect! The color is amazing, and her head is just gorgeous.

Beautiful girl! I think as long as you can feel her muscles under her skin and not a thick layer of fat, she'd in good shape.

she's stunning, I'm currently kicking myself for not getting an olive python I considered about a year ago. But I would say judging from the second pic she's not too fat. Can't tell well, but she seems pretty solid where your snake model is holding her underneath.

She looks great and of perfect girth.
About a mate for her, let's talk next weekend.

Do they tend to be more aggressive, or more laid back? I'm heading in the direction of a giant, and am into burms and maybe a green annie, but your olive is like a gi-huge-ic version of my Stimson's, which I love. Maybe I'll consider an olive next instead. :)

she's pretty laid back, but she gets a lot of attention. I've heard they can be a little aggressive, but with mine, I would have never guessed... but they are pretty food aggressive, so watch out... :D

the best thing about them, IMO, is that they are large, but not GIGANTIC like the annies, burms, and retics... but believe me, holding her is enjoyable... she feels big and loves to be held...

and even though she doesn't have any pattern, I think she gets more compliments than any other snake I own when people come over...

would you say, prehaps one that is handled & mellowed like yours would need two people to work with? like a larger snake, or could one person handle an olive well?

well, I generally deal with her alone, but I'm used to handling the retics and such on a daily basis... so really, it wouldn't be impossible, but it's not a bad idea to have someone around just in case...

but I do have to admit, about 18 months ago, I screwed up and the olive actually chased me down (from about 6 ft away) and got me by the hand, constricted my hand and arm, etc... I certainly couldn't have gotten her off me if I was alone... I've learned from that experience, and she hasn't even tried to get me since then... and just so you know, she was about 8 ft when that happened...

you just have to learn their body language. They move fast and have some nasty teeth, but the HUGE positive side of it is that they grow slowly, so you would have a lot of time raising a baby, which would mean lots of time to learn their behavior and get the snake used to being handled and used to you, etc...

overall, I think they are a WONDERFUL snake... come highly recommended from me... :sunny:

Wow; she is a ridiculously beautiful snake! From my knowledge of smaller boids, she does not look to be overweight, but that is just my opinion and I am not really sure.
    How are their temperaments overall?

Thanks!! I'm thrilled everyone likes her because I wish more people were interested in olives... there certainly needs to be more of them around...

I think we were talking about it a little in some of the previous replies, but mine is really friendly. I've heard that they can be pretty snappy, but she is great...

That is one stunning snake. Do they reach that size generally, or get any bigger? I know that it is hard to generalize, but how are they temperament-wise generally?

    Re: adult olive pics
thanks, mine is very friendly, probably more so than any of my other snakes, but at the same time, she's really food aggressive, so you have to be careful about that... overall she's my favorite snake that I have to interact with...

From what I've found, this subspecies ranges from 8-12 ft, and then the barroni olives get larger, up to 14-15 ft I think? She's between 9-10' now, and she's only 5 years old and they grow pretty slowly, so she's still growing, but I'm not expecting a whole lot more... they don't hit sexual maturity until 4-6 years...

There is a guy with a 9' male olive if I am not mistaken on kingsnake too. You can probably try dropping him an email.

If I had the money I'd take her without a doubt. If you still have her in the summer I may drop you a line as well.:)

What a stunning animal. Too bad you are trying to part ways with her, but I understand what you are doing. A lot of these "other" animals are underestimated because of the big five (balls, burmese, boas, bloods and retics).
