Spares?
I'm just curious, how many people keep spare "husbandry" items around just in case? For some reason the other day when I was buying an accurite for my new black blood Nero, I went ahead and bought 2 extra just in case. I mean, I was sorta tight on money seeing as I was already buying everything for Nero's set-up plus a reptile basics cage for Snape (my ball), but for some reason I dropped them in the cart and didn't think twice.
Fast forward to today where I go check on Snape and find a urate-soaked broken accurite awaiting me. I stoked that I had a spare on had ready to go and was set. But yea, how many people keep spares? Be it thermostats/t-stats/rheostats, tongs, hides, waterbowls etc?

Re: Spares?
I keep three tubs for everyone and a spare water bowl for everyone. :D

Re: Spares?
I've got 4 extra tubs with attached heat, and 2 extra slots in my rack right now... does that count as extras?
-
Re: Spares?
I have enough bedding on hand to completely replace all bedding with aspen to spare at any time necessary, I have a few extra hides laying around, but I never thought to get extra accurites or tubs or water bowls. That's probably a good idea!

Re: Spares?
I do it because I buy something end up not really needing it and then buying something else that i need and then my snake grows out of it and it goes on again. Always have mulch because I always get the biggest bag even though I dont need it. But hey came in handy when I got my newest snake.
And when I switch to racks I will have plenty of stuff.

Re: Spares?
yeah, i guess i have spare bulbs n hides.... not a religious stocker-upper though!

Re: Spares?
I have spare everything! :) I get nice deals from the Petsmart I worked at because the girl I commiserated with most is now the manager and she lets me use her discount or gives me slightly damaged or opened/returned supplies. It's the only reason I still associate with that place.

Re: Spares?
My rack uses rubbermaid 28 and 41qt tubs and I kept the tops. I also use disposable water dishes...so in an emergency I can move all the snakes in their tubs (adding the lids) in a matter of minutes. I also have a box of heat packs in case I need to do so in the winter time.
Not sure what other "supplies" I would need to stock up on.
BTW...I have 5 large tubs setup for rats so I could move all the rats out of their racks in a few mintues as well if we needed to evac them as well.

Re: Spares?
I keep all enclosures, dishes, hides and electrical supplies. Never know when that new "kid" will be found!:) Have enough spares to take them from hatchling to adult.

Re: Spares?
i have 3 spare acurites, a spare thermostat (zoomed one), 10 ceramic water bowls (i'm gonna start selling them), 2 heat lamps with bulbs, 2 extra water bottles for the rats, about 15 hides in all different assorted sizes (bottoms of plant pots), and as many extra tubs as i have snakes.... this makes cleaning easy, i just set up new tubs and swap the snakes, then clean the old tubs when ever i have a chance.
i wanna know what people that use racks do with all the lids that come with the tubs? i got like 10 or them just chillen in my closet.

Re: Spares?
I keep extras for all of my pets. My husband tries to limit my time at the petstores (just in case!!!..LOL) so I have extra everything just about for all of my pets. But I have a spare tank for my BP as well as extra water bowls, hides, bedding.....should get a spare accurite though. I think I could fill a small closet with all the spare stuff I have for the pets on hand, plus I can't bear to just toss anything I may be able to use again that one of them may have grown out of (or to have on hand in case of a new something!!!).

Re: Spares?
I have only one BP, but I have his old setup ready to go in the basement. If anything happened to his new tub setup I could have him totally re-set-up in an hour. The only thing would be making sure the temps were good.
I by my aspen in 10 lb bags, spare hides, spare water bowl, the old setup has its old uths and ceramic heat element and two thermostats. I have a spare accurite in a drawer some where...

Re: Spares?
Since I think this is sort of related to the topic...
I recently blew a fuse in the room where I house my snakes. It was only out for approximately 2 hours, but that room is rather cool, and dropped my temps drastically. Ever since I've been extremely paranoid, and have been considering the purchase of a battery backup.
I went to Lowes and they only one they had was designed for a computer, and only offered 28 minutes of "backup time."
Does anyone else have their heaters hooked into some sort of battery backup? Would a lower watt item like a heater consume the entire reserved supply in only 28 minutes? Should I post this in a different thread? :P

Re: Spares?
Wow! If I had extra tubs and racks.. I think I would somehow end up with "extra" (or at least more!) snakes. :) I keep a few tubs for housing a snake while cleaning their tub. I also have a few extra water bowls, and odd-sized hides that got outgrown and don't fit anyone as of yet that I am saving for the hatchlings that I keep from this year.

I would like to get a back up generator. The storm we had last year caused the electric to be out for a couple days. The wrong time of year could be disasterous.

Re: Spares?
I have extra hides, bedding, a heat mat, heat lamp, three bulbs, and 2 water bowls. I also have a cage completely set up should i need it. alittle obsessed?

Re: Spares?
I have so much extra crap from over time.... I even have an extra rack.....

Re: Spares?
I have extra UVA and B lights for my BD and Cham., extra CHE's, extra UTH's, and I kept all of the tub lids from when I got my rack. The rats are now in the snake's old glass tanks, but I have empty tubs that I can place them in if something came up.

that's not a bad idea either.
Or you could try using heat packs/hot water bottles (though depending you may be unable to get hot water) if it wouldn't be such a long time?
*makes grocery list*
lol
on another note, i have extra tubs- too many infact. the only bad thing about having spare stuff means i could get a few 'spare' snakes haha

Re: Spares?
I have enough spare tubs for one rack, enough extra water bowls for everyone and then some, and a couple of extra hides.
When I'm doing cleaning I like to have a clean tub to just place the snake right into. So I get a clean tub all ready, place the snake in that and then put him and the clean tub back into the rack. I do this for a whole rack and then I go and clean the tubs. This way I can clean them and let them dry with out having to worry about doing it quickly to get them back in.
Same thing with the water bowls. I just take out the old one and put in a new clean one once a week. Then I can go clean the old ones. I only keep a couple of extra hides to clean if they get soiled. I have a couple that insist on pooping all over their hide; but most poop away from it so I don't have to clean those very often.
But as for thermostats and thermometers, I don't keep extras of those.

Yep...there is that!
Happened to me this year. :(
but I try to keep extra everything!
You just never know when it may be needed.
I even have extra fuses for my Helix!
:D

Re: Spares?
Anything extra that I am sure I'll benefit from having I keep. I've gotten rid of a lot of extra aquariums and heat lamps over time because those aren't the kind of supplies I really like to use anymore.
-
Re: Spares?
I'm bad about getting and storing extras of everything. Especially when things are on sale. It has helped though. . . . when things go out (notice I didn't say "If" :) ) I can usually replace it without stressing about finding a new one.
-
Re: Spares?
i have so many critters... i always have extras of everything laying around. much better than being stuck and having to run to town to get something. ;)
-
Re: Spares?
Spares are great to buy if something is on sale. Let's say that water bowls are on sale.. it is much better to buy a bunch and have some extra waiting for new snakes; than to buy an individual one every time you get a new snake. :)

Re: Spares?
I've read through this thread and have now written up a shopping list for my cats, gliders, snakes, and lizard. I'm going to be stocking up on extra dry and wet food for the cats, drinking water, thermometers, BML supplies for the gliders, baby food for the gliders, water dishes for the snakes, and a travel cage for the gliders.
Would it be a good idea to get a tub for my corn snake and have it set up and ready to go if I need it. Do you use Flexwatt on tubs?
-
Re: Spares?
Yup, I've got tons of extras myself. Its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
-
Re: Spares?
if one of the tubs in one of my racks broke I would not be able to replace the tub immediately, but I'd be able to set up the current snake in another heated container (with hides, etc) very quickly. I don't think I have really have any permanent spare water bowls, but I can't order any just for extra right now.
I have several different types of forceps for feeding, some of which would only be used for new arrivals.
