Re: Wow now you can sue people for hurt feelings
Yea when a public statement is made like the its called slander. And can be brought to court.

Re: Wow now you can sue people for hurt feelings
Except Imus never said a specific person's name. It was a joke. Comedy. This is ridiculous. I'm sure they've REALLY suffered from this, I mean geez the entire country knows who they are and are portraying them as these poor victims... They never would have even known they were ever mentioned on the broadcast unless the media had blown it out of proportion.

Re: Wow now you can sue people for hurt feelings
it can be brought to court but it is nearly impossible to win that case...
In order to win the prosecution would have to prove that Imus intended to cause harm to the player.
Also the prosecution would have to show that Imus caused actual harm to the reputation of the player, making others believe what was said or think less of them.
People who are in the public eye such as a nationally touring college team would have an even more difficult time winning the case. that's why tabloids usually get away with what they do...
Not that it wasn't wrong... just a hard to win case from a legal standpoint.

This is true in most cases. Unfortunately for Imus it was a racily based as such the courts tend to have less bias decisions when these cases are brought to the courts.

So if you say nappy that's racist? Why?

Not everyone thinks they are victims. Players on that team have received many death threats over Imus getting fired.
Do I think it's a legit case? No.

No but you say "those nappy headed hoes" and that is.
Its a derogatory generalization that was founded by a specific racial group. So when its used by some one of another race some people feel that its racially based.

Ugh. I know this is true and I hate that this is true... If people took as seriously what black radio hosts say over the airwaves what white hosts do... well, ALOT of people would be fired and sued.
Not that I want that to happen. I want everybody to be able to do that. Not in the form of threats and very serious hateful behavior, but for the sake of comedy.

Well the real problem is what we are willing to over look and what we are not. If its offensive then its offensive whether its black lips or white that utters them. But we tend to be able to over look some offensive content when its someone of our own race spewing them out.

Yep, because we're supposed to feel guilt for the rest of our time here on earth.

I'm saying I think that's the reason that we are "willing to overlook so much"... Because of slavery we will always be ingrained with guilt.

Re: Wow now you can sue people for hurt feelings
Mencia is still on TV....why is that? He makes bigoted jokes all the time, its the staple of his shows...and its fairly funny. Is it because he's mexican...who knows...or is it because he makes fun of everyone equally.
Or should I be able to sue Mencia because he called me a honky or a cracker?
The world needs to take a sigh and lighten up... It was a joke.

Thats what certain groups (NAACP, ect.) want you to feel. Personally I don't nor have I ever own slaves in fact no one has for over 100 years. As for how our nation as for a brief whole treated minority's two generations ago was wrong. But should I feel guilty that some one with the same color skin as me didn't like minority's 40 years ago. ???? Should I be penalize for their views ???

Re: Wow now you can sue people for hurt feelings
Uggg
I should start sueing every person who has called me a name because I'm an albino... and sue everyone who has made less than pleasent comments about albinos.
Heck, come to think of it, I posted in the member pictures thread early this morning about a member who said something about his "all albino satanist church".... he was joking and was not talking about me or to me, but still, can I sue him for slander in implying that albinos are satanists? :D :P
People are waaaay too sue happy in this country. *shakes head*

Re: Wow now you can sue people for hurt feelings

Didn't he refer to the team or the college by name? He never singled out individuals, but I seem to recall he made a school reference.

So? He was making fun of a team of indeed very rough-looking girls. It was a joke. He wasn't trying to make fun of any certain girl, or calling names. I honestly don't think it was intended to be any kind of racial slur. I think it was blown WAY out of proportion and of course good ol' Al and Jessie jumped on the bandwagon.

Re: Wow now you can sue people for hurt feelings
He referred to the school because he wanted the opposing team to win. Had this whole thing happened right after Vtech NO ONE would be talking about it. A black guy got on CNN i believe and said the most intelligent things to sum up the whole debate, basically Al Sharpton is an arse-head and that if those girls are going to let some old dude who, they didnt even know about the comments until SOME ONE TOLD THEM-they'd never even heard of the guy before!-control their life, then he wins.
the point that baffles me the most is he is a SHOCK JOCK RADIO HOST.
in all honesty, why Imus didnt sue his employer is beyond me. That was his job, to push barriers.
And dont you know it, all of the girls on that team were not black. So. The point is moot.
I hope the case gets tossed out on its ear.
