I just had to share these pics!
This one is of a HUGE bug that came out of no where and took out a wasp. I'm still getting used to all the big bugs here, and this one is just something out of a sci fi movie.

And another pic of the red shoulder hawk that came visiting yesterday morning. I LOVE them.... :D

And here's one of a little fellow that was taking a dip in our pool. I could stop myself from rescuing the little thing. It's no bigger than my thumb!

And here it is after a good meal, and a brief rest..... I kept kicking myself for letting the thing live but it was so cute and I'm too much of a wuss....

    Very cool pictures!!

I'm with you, I don't think I could kill a wild mouse if it were outside and minding its own business. (In my house is a different matter entirely!) And better to have rescued it and set it free than to find a dead mouse in the pool skimmer. (I hated that part of pool care!) Cute little booger!!

Thanks Judy! I'm glad it's not just me. I also rescue all the wolf spiders in my pool as well. I figure they eat all the yucky bugs. The only kill zone in my house is my bedroom....

Haha, I'm a sucker for rescuing them too.... Although I'd have let the mouse go very far away from the pool... Something had to attract him over there in the first place as chlorine does not smell like food! I'd be too worried about him either getting to what did smell like food, or finding the pool again!

Nah... I just let him go out in the back corner of our yard. It's just been SOO dry here that all the critters are attracted to the water. There is no food out there. Ever since our first pool, animals just seem to be attracted to the pool. (I hate having to do dead animal patrol before the kids come down) I even had a squirrel swimming around one time. It had seemed stuck in the skimmer, but I managed to persuade it to climb a stick and head for higher ground. :D

I think it may be a damselfly ... maybe? Actually, I squeaked like a girl when the thing dropped and took off with it's meal.

Cool hawks! That insect is interesting too; I would have no idea what it was, either.
Wild mice are fair game in my neck of the woods though. Once you find their poop in your kitchen cabinets, in your dishes.. once you find they've chewed holes in your garbage bags full of used rat bedding and spread it all over the mudroom; they lose their cuteness factor!

I agree with ya Jen. Fortunately, I haven't had any problems with them in my house! If I did, I'd probably make someone else come out and kill them for me.

Lord that's a huge fly! Do they need landing permits? Geeze!

Nothing better than a hunting housecat around Christie. Our old female cat used to deal with any mice problems we ever had. A week of her on patrol and the mice (the surviving ones that is) generally moved on to safer places. :)

Re: I just had to share these pics!
Yeah; a good cat definately keeps the mice out! We had a ton of them during all seasons before we got Inky. Now we see neither hide nor hair of them indoors. And now that Inky's presence scares them off, he can spend time doing imprtant things like taking 6-hour catnaps and begging for food. :)

Re: I just had to share these pics!
I have two cats that should take car of any mice that get the wrong idea to hang out at our house. I've been giving multiple presents, and was able to rescue a poor little chipmunk that was inattentive.

In fact, my husband is no help in squishing bugs so I had to turn to my cat. I can hold her up above my head while she catches flies and moths. It's kind of funny to watch.

I love the shot of the hawk Christie! Isn't it great having raptors so close to home?

Ever since I read this thread last week, I've wanted to know what kind of insect that was. Well I think it's a giant robber fly AKA bee killer, not sure what species though - http://bugguide.net/node/view/3026. Bugs are cool  .

Yes it is! I love seeing them. Right now, I'm enjoying the hummingbirds every morning. They're so cute!

KeithTn said that it was likely a robberfly as well. It was a crazy looking bug. I'm sure my neighbors thought I was a bit loopy staring at the ceiling on my porch taking pics.
