    Good To Go!
Just got a new terrarium :) decided not to go with a tub because my dad doesn't like the idea, I'll be posting pics asap or check out my gallary and tell me what you think so far.

P.s I know I need 2 hides im getting those soon, I am also picking up a herpstat or a thermostat and also a temp/hydro meter.

How big is the floor dimensions? It looks awful small from here! Not to mention, a ball python is a ground dwelling species and doesn't need anywhere near that much height.

So.. your dad wanted something that looked nice, but isn't functional and isn't what will work best for the snake? That's not going to make your first snake keeping experience a good one...

That tank is going to be hard to get humidity in, as well as provide a proper temperature gradient. That baby is going to be beyond stressed with all of that tall space.

If he wanted you to use a tank, I would go find a 10-gallon. It would last you longer than that Exo-terra(which is good for arboreal geckos).

Just doesn't seem like you conveyed any of the awesome information you got from here, to your parents.

    Trust me.. I have.
I was happy with the tub Idea, but my dad is a complete :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:.. trust me.
I told him it would stress him out, but he didn't listen, he said its cruel.. but he's the boss so i don't want to ruin my chances, i think things will work out in the end...

Well said. That was my thought exactly but I lack the tack to say it in any sort of polite manner.

If that's the case perhaps you should wait until you can afford to be out on your own, and provide a safe, secure and stable environment for the pet. If you're going to be dependant on the rules of someone who doesn't and isn't willing to do what is best for the animal then IMHO you shouldn't have one.

Actually what's cruel is what your dad is doing. Why don't you let him read the info provided to you by very experienced Ball python owners and breeders instead of him taking your word for it. That cage is for arboreal reptiles, your husbandry is going to be awful. I don't think your good to go, unless you mean to the vet eventually. You did your research now maybe dad should do his instead of assuming what's best. Vet bills are gonna be way more than any setup is going to cost. I don't want to stress you out bro, just help you avoid a much worse and stressful scenario.

I know... The stress has now kicked in lol.. well ill try the tank, maybe add some plants to make it not as low? if i notice he is stressed out or not eating will for sure move him to the tub no doubt about it.

Very true. It's not that there's fault with you, it's your dad. At first, I thought one of those cages would be great, since they open like that. I was corrected by some great people, and by researching here. Instead of a tub, since your dad is so bent against it for some odd reason, you should get a 10gal tank, or a 20gal long at MOST. Show your dad the info here on this site so he sees you're not just trying to 'get more money' out of him or something like that. If he's at all a wise and intelligent man, he'll see. And if not, just use the vet bills would be higher reason (which would be true) :)

    Good luck!

Honestly Though... lets say i keep this tank until the BP gets bigger, it shouldn't be too bad, although.. I'm not a ball python expert.. After reading all of these posts, I WILL switch to a longer maybe 10-15 gallon tank.

    Thank you everyone
and please don't be upset with me.. :(

We're not "upset" with you, we're concerned. There is a very distinct difference. Well, with that tall tank you're GOING to have a hard time maintaining humidity which in turn will make it hard for your snake to shed and leave him with unhealthy scales. The temperature gradient would be hard to control as well, leaving a cold blooded reptile, in a incorrect temp can leave them susceptible to illness as well as poor body functions. It's just for a few more dollars and getting a proper tank would make keeping your snake a much more enjoyable experience! (for both you and the snake)

    Re: Good To Go!
Seriously... I waited like 17 years to get the Ball Python I've always wanted so I understand that you want one now... I had parental issues too, then I was old enough to want to be able to responsibly care for it.

Take it from someone who's been through it... Waiting isn't that bad, and all that waiting will do would be to make sure that by the time you knew you were ready for one, the animal would have the best possible home you could give it.

And my biggest concern isn't being mad, it's that if you have a pet, you really need to be the one caring for it, paying for it, and making sure you're doing what's best for the animal. The point of my post was just that if you're going to be dependant on a parent who isn't willing to do the research then it will save you a lot of frustration to just wait it out until you don't have to depend on them....

well when you get the snake and after a week of settling in, try to fed it and see what happens. have your dad try to feed it the next week, see what happens. make him do it the next week too, see what happens. maybe dad will then realize he knows squat about ball pythons.... when you have a starved snake.
