Best incubator

Ok, i need an incubator in the future. where is the best place to get a quality one. I am going to have about 6 females droping eggs so what size is best?

look into building your own, an old fridge/freezer, drink cooler(pepsi/coke), a small closet, large igloo cooler, or a wardrobe closet kit like a 3 -4 ft wide model with doors. hook up to a helix, a small pc fan and some flexwatt and you are good to go.

I fear anything that I build myself. :oops: I found Casey Hulse's incubators to be wonderful. I hatched my first clutch with one, and loved it.

christie, i'm pretty sure you could find a way to get someone to build you one!

nothing wrong with pre built bators, i just like the flexibility of designing your own. you can space the shelves, the way you want, put the fan where you want,etc.

if i had plenty of $$, i like the lab quality bators! some humidify and dehumidify too.

Here is one I have made from an old coke display frigde. The nice thin about the glass door and glass lid on tub is you can check on them without opening the incubator and distubing temps. The glass lid on tub is great to see if you have too much condensation and it may be dripping on eggs. NOT GOOD!

A friend scored this one for me. Look around online or in recycler ads for old store display fridges online, broken down ones even cheaper. Someone is always upgrading or going out of business. I tear all the guts out of them any way, makes them lighter. Don't use the fan that comes with them, they are strong and cool it down, i put a computer fan in it :cool:

I'm getting ready to build one just started buying the supplies. as mine will be out in the open I'm making it look like a piece of furniture. the outside of the incubator will be hardwood 1/4 plywood and the inside will be plastic paneling now the frames going to be 2x2 with insulation in between the two. and your normal flex-watt heating with the cp fan and a 50/50 door glass and wood i just hope it comes out the way i have it in my head

I would have to concur with the old fridge or cooler. They are pre insulated and are very easy to set up. It beats the hell out of spending alot of cash for an incubator and its capacity is huge. You can find an old fridge or cooler along the side of the road on trash day if you had to. You can get them from the repair store too if you have one near buy. I'm of course assuming you have a way to transporting one. Same goes for the computer fan. I see old pcs sitting out to the curb alot. Just take out the fan. Get some heat rope or flex, a thermostat and thermometer and your good to go. You could possible get it done for $50 or so.

FYI anyone in fredericksburg or the local area i work at Lacys appliance and come in contact with old fridges all the time ( we take old away when putting in new ) let me know and i can grab one for you if you have the room.. ( if your with in a few miles i can even bring it to you...not to far though my truck gets 11 miles to the gallon :) )

I REALLY like jaime's idea. He uses an aquarium heater submerged in water in the bottom of an old ice chest/cooler for heat and humidity. Can't get much more simple than that...

Also, if it's still on the shelves, the August edition of Reptile's Magazine has a great how to on making an incubator out of a cooler.

I made my own. I am awaiting my 2 clutches hatching. It worked/works awesomely and when I breed next, it is the only one that I will use. It took a styrofoam box; 2 egg boxes; soda bottles with water as filler; 2 feet of flexwatt, and a Helix. And Accu-rite thermometers of course. My cost out of pocket was just for the Helix, thermometers, and FW, and I made it in less than ten minutes :)

That is one thing that I am adapting mine for next year. I plan on adding a glass panel to the lid of the styro cooler. Too much of a pain to open/close it! The bottles help to retain the heat, but it'd be great to have a clear view.
