Re: names..
savanna: my husband named her.. i picked her out and he wanted to name her, if ever we had a girl human child thats what he would want to name her.
caution: i named him, he has nice yellow color to him, so yellow and black? Caution. i wanted something clever and origional. i think it is :)
remy: after the movie ratoullie (sp?!)
emmie: to rhyme with remy, they look very similar to each other
miss big ears: compliments of my wonderful son elliott who thought he was being clever.

Re: names..
Some of them Karl named, and some seemed to just "tell" me their names.
Kashmire - my first ball python. I was reading the Snake Keeper site, and Colette's first snake was named Kashmire. I loved it and even wrote to ask if they minded if I named MY first snake after hers, and they said they would be honored.
Echo - I saw that in a list of reptile names and liked it a lot.
Sierra - she's one who's name just came to me the moment I purchased her.
Casper - because he's a het ghost!
Piper - because he's a het pied (pied piper)
Oliver - because he's a het clown (Oliver Hardy)
Winston - just a cute name, and it seems to fit him.
Sophie - was reading a book with the main character with that name, and I liked it, and Sophie reminds me of someone quiet and diminutive, just like her.
Hannah Banana - her name just came to me when I rescued her from the pet store.
Pretzel - her name also just came to me, and it seemed to fit her
J-Lo - Karl named her, and it's appropriate, because she has a badunkadunk butt!
Mackenzie - a name I liked and wanted to give one of my snakes
Bailee - same as Mackenzie
Reese - for her chocolatey goodness and light brown blushing
Bindi - for her two head spots
Pandora - because she was a replacement for a male who was accidentally shipped as a female and so it was a big pandora's box.
Being fostered - Little Girl, Big Girl - simply because they won't be permanent additions.

Re: names..
Lady: Me and my family were trying to think of what to name her, then we were standing there watching her eat- which is ver dainty- and it just kinda fit. lol.
Rin: Because "Rin" means "Cold" in Japanese, and she IS cold blooded, but mainly becasue Rin is the name of a little girl in a show that I watch, and the little girl is calm and sweet, but curious at the same time.. Like my Rin.
Captain Jack Sparrow, or 'Jack': It was kind of a joke with my feoncee, bacuse I loved Johnny Depp more than him :)
Reggie: I dunno, I guess because I dont know if its a male or female yet and it can go both ways, and because even though its probably not, it kinda sounds Austrailian. lol.

Re: names..
George: He was a rescue dog orginally dubbed Georgie... Which I hated so it had to go!!
Dakota Bailey Austin 316 Montana Powers: Every member of my family picked a name and voted... Mine was Bailey - another purebred had that name so on his papers that's his name above... But we just call him Bailey!
Joey, Darby: Got them named as such
Carmine: It just came to me... He got called 'Carm'.
Cleo(patra): Full name Cleopatra, new BP to come home once my thermostat has arrived... It just came to me when I saw her pics...
Cass(anova): Chosen name for the Irish Wolfhound I will one day be purchasing... Once I buy him an SUV, A house, and a really big fence!

Re: names..
I forgot for the rats and mice, all the girls go by the name Pumpkin and the males by the name big boy makes it easier wen you have 4.24
-
Re: names..
Panndor -- I actually named my boy this because my boyfriend always names his characters Panndor when we play games. That's weird but that's why.
Jules -- I named my girl this because she's so beautiful, and I always thought the name Jules seemed quite beautiful.
Dante -- Two reasons: one, because I love love LOVE Clerks, and he's a pastel so Dante, as in Dante's Inferno.
Names pretty much pop up in my head when I see or hold something for the first time.

Re: names..
Cute thread.
I can't even begin to list all the animals I've had...would be too long. So instead I'll just give you the more clever or unusual names and their origins.
Indie: Short for Indiana. My first snake, a red checkered garter. Named by me with a double meaning of Indiana Jones (who hates snakes :)), and the Indy 500 for the checkers.
Blorp: European green toad. Yes that was her name...it just came to me while holding her.
Rusty: Not an unusual name of itself, but when given to a reddish brown Forest Hingeback Tortoise...
Hershey, Milky Way, and Nestle: Black minx, white and brown spotted lop, and rich brown normal Rabbits. I have no idea why I decided to name them after chocolates...other than their colors/markings.
Truffle: Probably the best name my clever partner has ever come up with. This was the name of my black and white Abyssinian guinea pig. :)
Nagini: Obviously we are both HP crazy... I was going to name her crystal, but Ari talked me into Nagini as being appropriate.
Garnet and Nugget: New rats named not only for their colors and breeds (Garnet is a red down under minx, Nugget is a roly poly little brown and white down under manx), but also to follow the precious gems/minerals naming of rats.
Currently we are still trying to find the right name for my new corn snake. Ari has suggested Gritz(the whole corn and cream thing), Hominy(alternative to gritz), and Brachs(candy corn). As you see, he's rather good at coming up with unusual names. :)

Re: names..
Canela (borneo short-tail) it means cinnamon in spanish and it matches her colors
Cleopatra (poss. het pied) her golden colors reminded us of egyptians
Fairlady (mojave) we wanted to name her after the Nissan 350
Bailey (mojave) his light chocolate colors reminded me of the drink Bailey's
Moo-Moo (female dog) My old nickname :)
Chachi (my old cat) Its a cute name that me and my mom thought of
Kathyris aka Kathy (my other cat) I wanted Kathy and my brother wanted Iris. So we mixed it together
-
Re: names..
All the ball pythons carry either irish celtic or scots gaelic names (Mike's family background is Irish/Italian, I'm Scots/Ukrainian lol). So basically we pick names that are impossible to spell and not much easier to say. :) We do try to choose names that reflect something in the snake's look, temperment or even something that describes the snake's origins (Saoirse for instance means wild and free to honor her wild caught background). The only ball python that wasn't named like this is Mikey's little male BP...Mikey says that snake is his "buddy" so Buddy it was.
The milksnake Emi was named by our daughter who owns her...it's Chinese and means "beauty". Our son's BCI came with the name Severus from Harry Potter and Luke liked it so much he kept it.

Re: names..
all the critters? let's see...
spencer, a cat- there wouldn't be a student named spencer. (my mom's a teacher)
sophie, a cat- out of a children's book- the BFG!! and it wouldn't be a student's name (she ended up having a student named sophie of course)
madeline, a cat- the madeline books.
calvin, a cat- because we got him as a kitten, and kittens are mischeivious- just like calvin in calvin and hobbs- my dad's nickname in college was hobbs too
braxton, a dog- there wouldn't be a student named braxton... that happens a lot with our pets...
shaina, a dog- there wouldn't be a student in my mom's class named that
lucy, a dog (1)- came named
lucie, a dog (2)- also came named- creepy eh? we changed the spelling for less confusion at the vet
harry, a rat- because of harry potter duh!
georgia, a rat- my brother named it after the person he got it from
tucker, a rat- liked it after going through the alphabet
cleo(patra), a ball python- i love egypt, and it seemed very appropriate
-
Re: names..
Okay they'll be a spelling and pronunciation test later....LOL....their names and the meanings behind them....
The female ball pythons:
Brannagh - dark beauty (and she is dark and beautiful)
Orlah - golden princess (for her lovely golden personality)
Saoirse - freedom and liberty (got it wrong in the previous post lol)
Danu - celtic goddess of fertility (we sure hope she is that)
Kyna - love and affection (because she's just a big love of a snake)
Rionnach - queenlike (and boy is she!)
Morag - the great one (her blushing is beyond great to me)
Cara - friend (named to honor Robin who gifted her to me)
Ailish - celtic form of Elizabeth (named after one of my daughters)
Doireann - temptetous weather (for her "big" personality lol)
Muirne - high spirited (she hated me as a hatchling!)
Darra - small great one (she's tiny but mighty)
Kennis - beautiful (tiny and so very pretty)
Fianna - warrioress (she's the baby that bit Mike LOL)
Niamh - radiance (she just radiates her beauty)
The male ball pythons:
Malachi - my angel (he is simply my angel)
Riordan - royal poet (we hope he is so poetic he charms the ladies LOL)
Buddy - named by Mikey because he's his "buddy"
There you go! :)
-
Re: names..
Sweet names, Joanna. I love the celtic/gaelic ones most since that's half of my background (Scotch/Welsh and German/Norwegian) :)
-
Re: names..
Thanks! I love them too, though personally I'd go with the more common english spellings but my Mike insists we use the "proper" spelling for their names! Just means that for about two weeks I have a sticky up to remind me how to both spell and say any new ball python's name when we get them in. :) I am still struggling with Niamh's name which is apparently pronounced "nee-eve"...good lord...darn celts!
-
Re: names..
Chase - Black labrador. As soon as we saw him, he was hyperactive and to this day it still fits him perfectly.
Oscar - Bassett Hound. My husband has had him 6 years way before he met me and he just thought it was a cool name.
Mallie - cat. She was already named when we rescued her and we liked the name anyway so why change it!
Athena - BP. Named after a godess cant be a bad thing? Plus i used to work for a place called Athena which is where i made friends with the people who are still my best friends today, so it reminds me of back home. (I'm from england but now live in Arizona)
Coby - tortoise. I named him after the singer in my fave band, plus i just love the name.
Shaddix, Nash, Maynard, Dax and Donnie are the random fish in our house right now, named after musicians, actors or sport stars! =)
-
Re: names..
I actually ask my regular chat room for names beginning with a certain letter. Most all my snakes have people names, but only people names that are not my friends or family(normally).
I organized them so that the pastels all have names starting with "p" like Peter and Pauline. The large grown females I purchased all have names starting with "G" because I opened the box and immediately found out I'd been "gyped" (No offense ot any Romani - I'm only using it int he modern sense) and named the first one Gyp for her fancy curliques. The others got G names to match.
I guess it's not as inventive, but it works for me. All the snakes that I don't have for sale(i.e. hatchlings) get named.
The one cornsnake is named Tiamot, after the goddess of chaos, since she's good at causing it.
-
Re: names..
wow, great everyone. i love the variety we have going on here, lots of really clever names :sunny:

Re: names..
Let's see... Most names just come to us.
Zoey/dog-My dad wanted to call her sasha, but for some reason my mom couldn't stop calling her Zoey, so it just stuck
Puma/cat-A stray cat I nicknamed because of her huge size. It turns out she was so big because she was pregnant. After she had her kittens, she brought them to us.
Butterscotch/Puma's kitten-She was orange. It was more of a nickname, but it never changed.
Busterella/Puma's other kitten-Well, we thought she was a he and he was feisty, but "he" got pregnant so we just changed the ending, but we still call her Buster for short.
Marbles/Buster's kitten-Just came to me. Though I should of named him blackbeard because he has a black face with a white mouth and neck, except for his black chin.
Ringlette/Buster's kitten-he is a grey tabby cat with a white ring going around his neck.
Lil' Girl/Buster's kitten-We never came up with a true name for her, but I don't think we'll ever try either. :)
Shadow/Buster's adoptive kitten-We have no idea where this kitten came from, but Buster just took him in. He's so named because he's really shy, and never comes out of the shadows.
Cinnamon/Guinea pig-She was brown... I know, original, eh?
Spice/Guinea pig-Cinnamon's daughter... The names just seemed to go together nicely.
Swirly Butt/Guinea pig-Lol!! My little sister named him. He had a black dot on his backside and when he was born and his fur was still wet, it looked like it swirled.
Buba/Guinea pig-We gave him away to my cousin (and he came back after a couple months) and my cousin liked big guinea pigs and thought his was going to be huge so there came the name. Funny thing is, Buba was the runt of the litter and was half the size of his brother... He was TINY!
Twitch/Guinea pig-When he was born, you'd touch him and he would jump around twitching. It was odd, and entertaining, but it only lasted the first few hours of his life.
Rusty/Guinea pig-He was black and orange so I wanted a Halloween name for him. My mom suggested Rusty, but it didn't seem Halloweeny to me. I never came up with anything better.
Sonic/Guinea pig-My little sister named him. At the time, she was obbsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sophie/Guinea pig-We cheated on that one... My mom found a huge list of names on the internet and went with the one that stuck out to her. Her name started off as Precious, but my dad kept thinking about the creature off of the Lord of the Rings, so we changed it.
Patches/Guinea pig-He was tri-colored and the colors were almost in big squares.
Claire/Guinea pig-Just came to me. But it is one of my favorite names.
I think that's it... Whew!!

Re: names..
all of my animals including dog, cat, and snakes are named after famous people...actors actually. the first 10 snakes are named and every one after that gets numbers

Re: names..
kneeonflamingo: Woh...that's a lot of cats and G.Pigs! I love both, but can't have cats because Ari is allergic, and Truffle turned out to be too needy time-wise for two full time students. Used to have 5 cats tho...
-
Re: names..
Skylla: Looked up Greek Mythology and liked the sound of the name
Kali (cat): Not sure just liked how it sounded when she was adopted her name was Lucky (odd name for a cat who is at the humane society)
Phantom (dog): Breed is known as the grey ghost
-
Re: names..
Kinda embarrassed...got the smallest list
Samuel L. Jackson - well we saw Snakes on a Plane....roommate was like "dude you gotta get one." I say ok and next day i bring home my lovely boy...
Aria - Wanted a Greek name...couldn't find one that someone didn't already have...so Cafe Del Mar inspired me.
Optimus Prime - Will be the name of my ghost. I said a while back before the movie...that my next male snake will have that name...so looks like it will be the ghost.
-
Re: names..
Altair - "swift one" in Arabic I believe
Klaus - felt like namin' him somethin' German :D

Yeah, we want to get the female cats spayed, but they're strays, so they come and go a lot. My dad is allergic to the cats, but they're outdoor cats so it doesn't really affect him. Although, he gets ticked off when they try to come inside. He hates cats. :) We bred the guinea pigs but then my little sister became allergic. She couldn't handle them without getting a rash. My mom had the same reaction, so we had to get rid of them. :(

Re: names..
I LOVE coming up with names. I'll often come up with names way ahead of time or even for pets that I know I'll never have. I tend to switch back and forth between mythological names, and fangirlish names. I'll list/explain the current ones for example:
Snakes:
Gomez the BP: From the Addams Family, because it's a cool sounding name plus he winds up the arm giving little kisses like snakes do. Cara Mia! ;)
Falkor the corn: he was actually our first snake, and we wanted a very non-threatening name to ease the extended family into a nice secure "see, snakes are cute!" state. So we named him after the luck dragon from the Neverending Story.
Ma-tsu the VBB: Hers is the name of an Asian goddess of the sea, which I thought really suit the lovely blue colors and charming temperment of our girl. My favorite story about that particular goddess is that if a sailor is in need of help it's best to call her by her actual name instead of her title "Empress of Heaven" because if you call her that it takes her longer to show up. Since she has to put on her fancy empress gear. Boy does that suit our girl, lol.
Neptune the VBB: Dunno if we'll keep up the sea god theme with our beauties, but Neptune suits our boy just fine! Temperment and handsome looks alike! Also, it's a gorgeous planet to boot and sometimes I swear the boy acts like an alien, lol.
Lil Irwin the rubber boa: We got him right after Stevo passed away... I'm a huge fan and miss him. This little guy actually kind of helped me deal with the sense of loss. :happycry: Rubber boas also always make me think of him because he gave Ross the Intern a rubber boa in parting, which I thought was adorable.
Rabbits:
Daphne: Karen actually named this girl, she's always liked the name Daphne. So no big story there, lol.
Bowie: He actually came with this name when we got him from the rabbit rescue, and it was too perfect! He was named that because he has strange eyes, one is half green and half blue, so he was named after David Bowie of whom I'm a big fan. Daphne fell in love with him right away (well, spayed love, lol) so it was meant to be.
Unut: We, and the vets, and pretty much everybody thought Unut was a girl initially so we named him after the Egyptian hare headed goddess. Since he's got the ancient Egyptian eyeliner going on. When he was under the knife to get spayed, they discovered he had no uturus and was in fact a boy! Younger than he looked because he's a mixed breed and a big boy. We thought about renaming him, but he's our Unut-monster and it stuck. Those names are pretty gender neutral anyway. ;)
Kitty:
Cleopatra: Okay, not a creative name for a kitty, but hey I was like 9 years old when I named her so whatcha gonna do, lol. Cleo suits her perfect! :)
In the future, a few names I want to use include Tesla (dwarf boa?), Tulsi & Rudra (trinket snakes), Morticia (BP), Batman (?), Mana (VBB?), and I want to name a round golden lop bunny Buddha so badly, lol, the cuteness...
Dunno what I'd name Batman, but it's hard to resist because it'd be hilarious to me, being a dork and all. "Would you like to meet... BATMAN!?" "Time to feed Batman!" "Dangit, I have to clean out Batman's cage, he pooed again." I don't know what's automatically funny about the name Batman... it just is. Like naming a pet Chuck Norris or Kyser Soze.
-
Re: names..
Nevaeh- my dog. i have a niece named heaven who i was missing a lot when nevaeh was born. it is heaven spelled backwards
Gypsy- my cat. she was the first in her litter to start exploring the world. gypsy means wanderer
Floyd- ball. matt likes pink floyd. alot. really.
Tank- ball. we originally thought he was a she and named him kiara. once we had him probed we had to come up with a super masculine name. matt came up with this one and i couldn't think of anything better.
Nemo- is a maroon clown fish! go figure!
Spooge- a sailfin/algae blenny. he looks like a glop of spooge! lol. (mods feel free to delete this one!)
Hotlips- a naso tang. she has bright orange lips
how sad is it that we name our fish???? :P we have more but they're pretty much named for their breed.....
-
Re: names..
fred- a rather normal name.
alfie- was gonna name her Al, since she's albino, but alfie is a little more famine sounding.
sancho- my girlfriend bought him for me so i named him after her. sancho was a nickname i gave her awhile ago (don't remember why).
inspector becks- we named him becks cause I rescued him the same day david beckham arrived in the US, and thew an inspector in there cause he has a cool looking mustache.
grendel- i have always loved the book beowulf, and my friend has a cat named beowulf so i couldn't take that name.
selene- she's my all white leucistic rat snake, and when she was in quarantine she was in front of a poster i have of kate beckinsale in the movie underworld. and in the movie her name was selene.
jovi- my girlfriend liked that name, don't know why.
i still have to name my spider, pastel, and het ghost.
-
Re: names..
My normal is Ozzy= My son named him. ( Ozzy Osbourne )
My lemon pastel = Corona after the beer and because of the yellow in him.
My albino= Edgar after the albino rocker Edgar Winter.
My het albino= Janis after Janis Joplin ( in keeping w/ the rock theme )
-
Re: names..
Sekhmet Doom: Female Burmese cat. Sekhmet is the Egyptian goddess of war and protection. She is the Lion headed goddess and is sister to Bast (the Cat headed goddess). When I got her (the cat) I wanted to name her Bast, but she was NOT all regal and kind, so she got to be called Sekhmet. The Doom part came in when I realized she is a terror. She lives in Washington state with my mom.
Reshmar: Male Ball Python. I was vaccuming just after I had gotten him and I just thought of it. Probably relevant to some Star Trek episode.
Sitka Renenutet: Female Ball Python. When I first wanted a Ball Python I meant to get a girl and name it Renenutet (Utet for short [sounds like "oootet"]). Instead I got Reshmar first because the store owner wanted to sell the females he had to breeders. Renenutet is the Egyptian snake goddess and is a protector of sorts. However, when I got Sitka she didn't feel like an "Utet", so I just came up with Sitka to use as a name, and eventually put both names together.
-
Re: names..
Lex is my normal bp big superman fan soo thought that would be a cool name for a snake
Kiff is my other normal bp love futurama
and i got a 07 spider coming soon and im in between names like "brock" cuz of the villan in spiderman venom his realy name was eddi brock
-
Re: names..
Wow, great thread! Very inventive names. I tend to name my snakes as groups like Wolfy-Hound does. All my normals get names after spices/herbs; such as parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. My pastels get fruit names like mango, peaches, kiwi, and canari. My clowns are named after clowns: bozo, clarabel, etc. My butters have names such as Parkay, marj, etc. Then there's those that my daughter names: scrotum, bizotch, Bonnie and Clyde, Martini and Rossi, Borris and Natasha, Thelma and Louise, etc.

Lol!!! I name my fish too! I just didn't post them because I thought the same thing! :8:
Ricky/Algae eater (Pleco??)-My friend named him... I actually think it is a girl so I call her Rickyetta.
Bully/Firethroat Meeki-He is an aggresive fish and always picks on my other firethroat.
Billy/My other firethroat-Is always picked on and Billy is a very small, picked on name. (No offense to anyone that may be named Billy on these boards.)
Sharky/Rainbow Shark-Pretty self explainitory (SP?).
-
Re: names..
:) I've always named my fish. Heck, all my stuffed animals have names as well! I just didn't list the fish, past or present, because my list would have been two pages long.
Right now I have two goldfish named Bitt and Bite because they started out in a cute little one gallon tank shaped like a computer monitor. Also have a pleco named Norton because he cleans up the computer. :)
Probably the cutest fish name was given by my daughter to an iridescent shark: Spaz. She said it was because that's what he did.
-
Re: names..
The majority of mine are named after the dragons of Anne McCaffrey's book series. Only Amani, Sullivan and Sonja the boa have differing names.
We have:
Arith, Breth, Miranth(going to Sarah, I'm sure they'll change her name :) ), Arith, Orth, Alaranth, Branth, Solth, Hannath(going to Jo, so she's gonna be an Irish girl), Orlith(Joanna's too), Mininth, Caylith, Wirenth, Faranth, Tiroth, Zaranth and Loranth(going to go be Irish ladies too), as well as 4-6 I need to name. Phew!
I have to look up names for a granite male, a jungley female, a hypoish female, a harlequin female and a classic jungle female(formerly known as KLG), as well as what I come home from Daytona with and what I keep from the clutches that are hatching(hatched). My roster is full...
-
Re: names..
faun-like the guy from pan's laberinth
madusa- mythological names are good
athena-another myth name

haha!!! never thought about it but it's so true!!!!
and it's great to know we're not the only ones!
i have a 3yo and two 5yo sisters that name all their fish after family members. that makes for some interesting convos. for instance, my sister ate her husband! lol. and i keep dying so my mom has to replace me. i'm an algae eater so sometimes i'm really pretty and sometimes i'm horribly ugly! lol
