    Doesn't she look skinny??
    http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h3...DSCN0882-1.jpg

I just got this guy from a breeder down in Kansas. She literally came about 25 minutes ago, and I noticed she is really skinny. You can kinda see her backbone. Do you guys agree that she is skinny or is it just me?

::Edit:: The girlfriend just decided to name her Charlotte (after Charlotte's Web) I think it's a keeper! Wish me luck guys on getting her up and running!

I don't know, I was holding her, and I don't know if you can tell on the right side of the picture, it looks like a lump (as if the shipper fed her and threw her in the pillow case.. ::shocked)

She has like a V-shaped back which would make me feel she was skinny. Maybe I'll get some better pics, but I don't want to bother her.

Well how many meals did it have prior to shipping ???

That lump is a little odd. Did you pick that one or did the breeder just send you a female spider???

It may be that she's just completely stressed from the trip. Animals can sometimes have crazy weight drops when under duress. If that happened, that lump could be a couple days old.

I wouldn't bother her. Get her warm and comfy and happy, and see how she looks in a few days.

She had four meals prior to shipment. I picked her of the three he had.

first thing i would do was email and call the breeder and let him know of the problem/lump. give it a few days and see what happens. this way you have proof and he will take it back and send a healthy one if there are any problems

I'd ask him when he fed her - it does look like a lump from a recently fed meal. Let's hope he didn't feed her the day before shipping. If he did, hopefully she'll keep this meal down.

Congratulations on the new one! But you totally stole the name I wanted to use for a future female spider! (I'm teasing you, of course!)

Part of going with a good breeder is confidence in that relationship. If you are at all concerned about the snake's appearance, feeding issues, etc. before coming to a forum, I think perhaps you should have given your breeder time to answer your concerns first.

    :colbert: Lol.

The lump seems to come and go only when she curls up. She's very active. Hasn't even gone into her hide yet, just crawling literally everywhere. And when I open the tub, she literally dashes out very fast. I'm looking at her from afar in the tub, and the lump isn't there, and I actually held her and let her slither through my fingers and didn't feel anything, but I did take notice of how skinny she is. I think I'm going to try feeding her every 5 days. She is a lot longer than my pastel being that she is younger by a month. Is that normal? Girls are bigger than males even at younger ages?

They vary so much in growth rates that you really can't compare one individual snake to another to figure out what is "right." It could be that her initial growth spurt has gone into length rather than weight, which might account for her looking thinner than you expect. She doesn't look emaciated or anything, at least not from that picture.

I'd follow the other's advice and give the person you bought her from a heads up as soon as possible about your concerns. Most likely, it'll turn out to be nothing of consequence. But, on the off chance that the lump is retained yolk or some sort of blockage...or if the snake fails to thrive...you'll at least have notified the breeder/seller up front of the issue so he can't turn it on you a month from now and say whatever problems are due exclusively to your own husbandry issues.

And I'd also follow the advice of leaving her completely alone now that the initial "exams" and pictures have been taken. Give her a chance to settle in and see how she eats for you a week from now.

Defintely going to leave her alone. I put her in the quiet "neglect" room and give her some time away from any noise what-so-ever. It's also my brother's room cuz he's away on vacation :D
