On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
I have a request to make... :P
Please don't talk about the new Harry Potter book.
OR...if you must talk about it...please don't do so with any details that spoil the story for anyone else.
OR....if you simply must discuss the details...please...for the love of all that's good and magical about losing yourself in a book....write "SPOILERS!!!" in your thread title, or in the post before skipping way down to actually type whatever it is that can't be left unsaid.
Seriously...not everyone is going to buy the book the first day it is released...and not everyone is going to sit down and read it completely in the first 36-48 hours. Personally...I DID buy the book right away. Had pre-ordered it and all that junk. But....the reading is super slow.
Why? Because when we first got into Harry Potter, my daughter was too young to read them. Both due to the reading level required and to some of the graphic/emotional maturity of the stories. But she really, really wanted to read it, and I was interested too. So....I bought the first book and read it out loud to her. And...we have done so with each consecutive book ever since. Yes...she's quite old enough to read it on her own now.....but it's a rare chance for us to share something special and memorable together....so....even up to the very last book....I'm reading it aloud. All the way through.
This takes time! It's sometimes challenging to schedule a block of time together for a reading session. And my voice typically gives out after awhile....I can't go more than four chapters at a sitting, at the very most. (Though experience has taught me that by the time we get to the climactic chapters at the end of the book I will read until I'm croaking! LOL)
When the #6 book came out, we went to the midnight party at the bookstore to get it. Could not wait to sit down and start reading it together!! Later, on the same day of release...within hours of it hitting the shelves, I was browsing a gaming forum I belonged to, and was reading a thread about some in-game technique or something....when some absolute ass blurts out in the middle of the thread, completely off topic, what the tragic twist at the end of book 6 was. Just one sentence.....that once read could never be unread.
I never let on to Petra that I knew anything particularly upsetting was going to happen. We read the book through together as usual. But that seriously tainted the experience for me...knowing what was coming.
So now....I'm avoiding reading ANYthing about Harry Potter. If I see the name mentioned, I turn away. LOL I won't even read magazine headlines that have HP or JK Rowling mentioned.
And I know I'm not the only HP fan who chooses to savor the story and linger over it, rather than consume it all in one big gulp. So please....please.....be considerate and careful with the spoilers.
I know...I know....I talk to much.... :P Thanks for bearing with me.
:sunny:

I totally agree with you Judy. I have not even bought the book yet but I will be in the next week and god knows when I will actually have time to sit and read it.

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
the ladyfriend is a true fan, she bought the book and did nothing but sit there the next dave and read it. As did at least one other friend of mine. I witnessed the HP craziness the night it came out over by Harvard and supposedly some guy went around saying who died and on what page it happened and other things. A friend of mine thought it was hysterical, I thought that he, and said guy were both d***s. I don't understand why you would want to ruin someones enjoyment of something, especially after they put 6 books worth of time into it already. I just really angry about all the dumb people.
So, good post. I hope no one ruins it for you.

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
Good post! I'm behind by 2 books so I have some catching up to do. I'm avoiding all my HP friends. LOL

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, JAMIE LIVES IN A BOX!!!!!!! but seriously, that's weird, I thought that was one of those things everyone knew about, and a lot of people decided they're too cool to read because it's supposedly a kids book.

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
SPOILER ALERT!!!!
The ending is:
Tony gets high and arms himself against Sosa's men. He is killed by a single shotgun blast.
Wait, I think that is a different movie...

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
I had the 5th book ruined for me and I actually felt really depressed because of it. I also work in a bookstore so I'm trying to read the book as quickly as I can with my busy schedule so that someone doesn't come in and start blurting out the story. I hate it when people do it intentionally. Do they get a kick out of ruining a book for someone. What kind of life do you have that the one thing that really makes you happy is ruining books for people. Really sad. When the book was released, some kid in the store bought his book then immediatly began reading it outloud to those waiting in line. The man at the register made him leave the store.
I'm only on page 323 myself. How far is everyone else? (just page number. Do not mention an event in the book.)

I love the box...
Anyway, I was just kidding obviously..Although I haven't read any of the books (I don't read anything without lots of pictures) and have never seen the movies.

You had me wondering... There's no way you couldn't know... Without living in a bomb shelter for the past five years.

Wait. The books don't have lots of pictures. Actually, the only pictures my HP books have are a small picture that goes under each new chapter title.

Oh, I didn't mean it like that. I just mean I have a few friends that are like, that's so stupid, that's so gay, that's so childish. And I think it's ridiculous because they haven't read any of it. I think it's a great story, doesn't matter who the characters are, but it's very well put together. Also I heard some guy on the radio reading important parts of the book, and mocking all the HP fans. I think that that is just ridiculous and mean. So what I meant is the people that go out of their way to say they hate it, and ruin it for everyone are the ones who are too cool to read it. Not that everyone who hasn't read it is too cool
Just to clarify

Hahah..I didn't take it any way. I just don't have interest in it so I havent seen the movies. I really don't read. I am too hyper and reading doesn't keep my attention.

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
Reading a book is one thing.....no problems with that....I still read comic books...
....now if you read the book while wearing a costume with a cape.......that is a whole different issue.....
...I am waiting for the movie.......ha ha
-
Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
When I brought my sister's book home, my mom skimmed through the last few chapters and then said she was satisfied now that she knew who dies. I'm tired of all this "Who's gonna die?" stuff. I just want to read a good book. All anyone cares about is who's going to die in this book. Its kind of annoying really.
If a customer spoils the book for me while I'm working, I will more than likely reach across the counter and strangle them or dump hot sauce in their latte.

I see no problem with dressing up for the book release. I for one, was dressed up as a Ravenclaw student while I worked at the bookstore during the release. I only dress up for Harry Potter if its a book release or movie release. I'm 20 and I still love to dress up. Nothing wrong with that. I had a long black cloak w/ hood. Hogwarts t-shirt, black pants, Ravenclaw scarf, and I even found a pen that was modeled to look like a wand from harry potter. People really liked my outfit.

Ummm....does that mean because I read my book wearing my Griffendor blanket and Harry Potter glasses that I have some sort of mental problem....:P

No cape? :( No issues with cosplay......I was just picking ;)
Where are the pictures? :D

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
Because I was working, nobody had time to take pictures of the party or my outfit. I wish I could have gotten some pictures though. One of my co-workers dressed as Snape. Melissa, our kids department lead dressed as the Fat Lady. It was awsome. Too bad its the last one. But of course, there are still the movies to be released. I can always dress up for the last two remaining movies.
Go Ravenclaw! (Sorry, big HP fan here. I was sorted into Ravenclaw despite my horrible GPA)

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
I thought I was getting the book on Saturday (preorder), but now I won't get it until this weekend, which is KILLING ME.
I've been hiding away from ANYONE I know who is reading it, as I want to be able to find out myself.
Damned Amazon.com and their slow shipping...
-
Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
Well Ive read it all- but of course, I would never spoil- and I LOVE it!! Its great, I would suggerst it to anyone :)
-
Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
I got it, and read it all already, specifically because I was afraid someone would spoil it for me.
Someone did get a little tiny spoiler to me, and I was mildly annoyed. I did NOT read the last book, so some stuff didn't make as much sense. So I got it today, and will read it too!
I enjoyed it and I hope everyone else enjoys it WITHOUT spoilers making through the defenses!!
And I love people dressing up! It's all good fun! Besides, how many folks think WE are all weirdos just for owning snakes?
I guess we'd ALL get into Slytherin!!

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
I think thats kind of neat. My Wife and boys do the same thing and have been doing so since the first book. Even though my boys are now 13 and 15, they still like to have Mom read it to them. It's a nice way to spend time with the family. Also, since my wife likes to buy things online instead of going out to stores, we don't even have the book yet since it's still being shipped. So, I agree, no spoilers please.

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
I've been avoiding HP people like the plague. I was even afraid to read this thread because I thought someone might have seen it and included a spoiler just to spite everyone. >_< I'm actually taking a break from reading it right now. I just cant sit and read in one long block. I have to take it slow and enjoy it.
All of my friends are HP fanatics, so we all respect each other's reading paces and wait to talk about the book until we've all had a chance to laugh, cry, and let it sink in. :)
I didnt really have any interest in the books when they first came out. It was my mom who picked up the first one for herself and then decided it was something we could all do together. So every night we'd sit down and read two chapters or so. We were I think almost to the end of the second book when my mom passed away. I was 14 at the time, and my brother and sister (twins) were both 9. It was a completely unexpected death, and naturally we were all devastated. I've continued reading them religiously ever since because they remind me of her, and hearing her read out loud to us. Plus, I figure she'd like to know what happens. So I always read them and make sure to tell her. She really liked the series...
 :aww:

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
I see a lot of people read out loud to their families. My fiance and I were considering reading outloud to each other, but I have a problem with reading outloud. Its not that I'm too shy to read outloud, its just that I never learned to read outloud. Even the simplest words I stumble over, yet when I read to myself I read pretty fast. I'm not sure why I can't read outloud, but we have decided to form our own little two person book club. We will take turns picking out a book for the two of us to read. Should be fun. I'm up to page 410 in HP7 now.

please don't use the term "gay" as it is offensive to some people - aleesha
I was going to PM you Aleesha, since you seem to be the only one offended. But if no one else could tell, I was using it to prove a point, the point being what people have been telling me about Harry Potter.
-
Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
qiksilver, might I point out that using the term gay in any derogatory manner is offensive to me and possibly many others here on BP. I request that you do not use the term again.
Now back to Harry Potter. I'm up to 472. I'm getting to a really good part. I'm so excited. I'm taking a little break before getting lunch and start reading it again. I can't wait to find out the outcome of the Harry vs Voldemort struggle. :sabduel:

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
I got the book, and avoided the internet yesterday so I could finish it! Yes, I'm a big loser. I thought it was pretty well done, although I got bored with parts of it.
I usually finish books pretty fast. I like to read, and it's so much more relaxing than ... oh let's say ... unpacking boxes....

Hey Mike, We did discuss this in pm to each other. I told you that using that term hurts (yes hurts... not hurted (past tense) but hurts as in present tense!) some of our members... and I even gave you a link to the thread and the area where members are sharing how upsetting it is to them for people to use this term. So I strongly doubt I was the only one offended.
I understand that you are saying you were repeating what others have said, but if they said it's a *insert inappropriate words/term here* book... would you have said that in the thread? No, you would have said something else to get the point across and so in this case... changing the word "gay" to "immature, adolescent or silly" would have worked just fine.
now... back to Harry Potter folks!

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
Haha I avoided the news the internet and public in general until I finished the book. No way was I gonna let the final one get ruined for me.
Altho I did find when I closed the book for the last time that the realization of "this is the final book, no more new books" I was kind of saddened. They could do 10 more books and I'd follow right behind it all.

So you decided to make a wonderful impression by coming on a forum you haven't been to and explicitly doing what the OP requested everyone NOT do. Brilliant.

Re: On Harry Potter (NO Spoilers!!!)
Glad I saw no spoilers. I'm on 535 now. I'm going to stay up as much as possible tonight to finish. My friend told me that when she finished the book she closed the cover, set it down, and let everything sink in and then went to her sister for a hug.
It is sad its the last one. I wish she'd write more. Maybe not after Harry Potter but before his time. Maybe his parents or something. *shrug* I'd read it no matter what it was about as long as it took place in the world of Harry Potter.

Oh Man:eek: Go to work for 8 hrs and look at the crap that has hit the fan!!! Just have to hate immature little brats who think it is fun and cool to spoil other peoples fun. Grow up little one....One day may you have your bad attitude turned toward you by someone else...."curse, curse, curse"...And I am an avid Harry Potter fan and do know how to curse you:P I am soooo glad I did not have the pleasure of reading the book spoiled for me and I hope no one else who has not read it had their fun ruined either...as I said early in this thread I will not even get the book until the end of next week.....Pleasant reading to all of you who are currently reading the final book:)
