I'd buy it straight from the source! http://www.hatchrite.com/

Or if you're going to Daytona, I'm sure they'll have it there (they did last year).

OK, looks like you have to get it from a retailer. Zoo Creations is owned by Kevin McCurley and Kara Glasgow - that's who I'd buy it from.

matt at pangea usually ships the day or the day after you order, depending on what time you place the order. i've never gotten an incorrect order from him. :)

This stuff is the real deal then, I'm guessing? Its not just some hyped up, overpriced vermiculite mixture is it?

Depends what you consider real deal. In my opinion, if someone can't mix vermiculite, one of the more simple parts of the breeding/incubation process, it doesn't bode well for their success in the more difficult parts. I prefer to gain experience through doing it the first time and learning how to do it properly (doesn't just apply to Ball Pythons).

I have heard nothing but good things about Hatchrite and if Kevin and Kara, Matt from Pangea and other respected breeders in the reptile world endorse it, I'm positive it gets the job done. However, its extremely expensive compared to vermiculite and not for me, but again, its just my opinion.

I've hatched ball pythons and colubrids with Hatchrite, perfectly clean stuff and it's awesome. No mixing, no making mistakes, no worries at all from my experience with it. :)

I've never tried hatchrite...Would be too expensive...

I prefer Vermiculite and Water...I've hatched out Hundreds of snakes using this stuff without any problems...

You can get a 16lb bag at your local gardening store for around 10-15 dollars.

Re: where do you get hatchrite?
i have to say that i wouldn't use hatchrite for snake eggs because of the cost. i'm trying it with my gecko eggs this season and so far i like it a lot, but it's really not that much different than what i had when i mixed my own perlite last season. hatchrite is fluffier and lighter feeling, but it also seems to lose moisture more quickly.

So basically if you breed snakes you must hide that fact on here?
Seems this man comes here gives helpful advice and knowing he has been breeding for years should help support the advice he is giving.
I didn't read anywhere that he was trying to make a sell.
I don't believe he sells vermiculite so it was helpful advice that this guy does not need to buy expensive hatchrite that vermiculite works great also.
He seemed to be helping a fellow breeder when you start flaming him on a thread thats not even one you started.

I agree! Breeders shouldn't be afraid of giving solid advice on this site. Back off jglass38, we don't need that kind of attitude around here!

My advice is that I think that both vermiculite with water as well as hatchrite are super cool!

WOW did i start a selling war...got to love it. so Jon i know hatchrite is expensive and yes Jamie it should be one of the more simple parts of breeding, but i ask you a question, if it was your first clutch would you try to mix your own not knowing if you added to much water or to little since you have never had any hands on before? i have read the directions but those dont always work ( ask Meme about her trip to 8ball ( yes i know those were driving directions work with me) so Jamie would you like to show me how to make the correct mixture? i will buy the materials and bring them to you and we can do a workshop.

edit: and forgot to add only expecting one clutch if she goes, she has fooled me before this year

I mixed it for my first clutch and it worked out fine. My question would be, if you don't do it this year, how will you be any more comfortable doing it next year? I would be happy to help as best I can to get the mixture right for you. Its not very difficult at all and as long as its not too wet, you can't go wrong. Its probably a good idea to get a small bag of coarse vermiculite and make up a couple batches (make sure you don't buy the stuff from Lowes or HD, it is way too fine). Feel free to call me any time to talk about it!

ok just re-read what i wrote...didnt mean to come off as much as an (blank) as i did sorry. the adding the water part is what freaks me out. i am willing to pay the extra few dollars for hatchrite with only one clutch but i do need to learn how to mix it. can you give me the exact name of what i should pick up? i will pick some up and do some test runs

You want to get coarse cut vermiculite. You can probably find it at any garden store. It will look more like this:

http://www.reptiletubs.com/vermiculite.jpg (Picture from Eric at www.reptiletubs.com)

    than this:

    http://www.richters.com/OnlineSeminars/seeding/verm.jpg

I tried to use the fine stuff this year from Home Depot (lack of preparation) and wasn't happy with it. It doesn't hold the water as well and you end up with a wetter (always bad) mixture using the same amount of water as with the coarse.

EDIT: I noticed when I look at the pictures side by side, its not as evident as it should be. Just make sure you buy coarse vermiculite. Do a search online and you can find it. www.reptiletubs.com has small bags too as do some other reptile supply places.
