The age old battle: Metallica vs Megadeth
So its been a battle for a long time. Who's better? Metallica or Megadeth? Now, most people would say "METALLICA DUUUDE!" Yes, I was really into both when I was 11 and getting into heavier music. However, just from personal taste and respect, I'd have to go with Megadeth. Why? Well, if it weren't for Dave Mustaine (and his drinking problem) the first 2 Metallica albums wouldn't have had the fury and heaviness.

When Dave left or was kicked out of Metallica, Dave's plan was to start his own band and use the songs he co-wrote with Metallica for the first Megadeth album. Instead, Metallica used them and were highly respected. Yet Mustaine went and wrote all new songs, was the main writer and musician of Megadeth and still Mustaine never really got the respect he so rightfully deserved. IMO Mustaine as a musician and writer was beyond Metallica and the rest of the "Big four" (Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax)

In the long run, out of the big four, Megadeth even though had some not so good albums still never faded from being a metal band. Unlike Metallica who went to become a sad joke from the first 4 album which are milestones no doubt to the pathetic albums such as "The Black Album", "Load", "Re-Load" and the nu-metalcore pop album "St. Anger".

So, who do you think is the better and respectable band?

I have to say Metallica, although I personally feel that ..And Justice for All was the beginning of the end. I was hella disappointed when they was trynna say that St. Anger was supposed to bring back memories of Kill em All; I don't recal hearing a single solo in the album. The production was horrible... etc.

However, the first 3, maybe 4 albums they had were straight classics in my opinion. Dave Mustaine's one hell of a musician, but I gotta go with Metallica on this one. Wish they'd make some kind of music instead of some kind of monster tho... :headbang:

There is NO contest here. But I happen to love "Black" AND "Load". And I have never loved any Megadeth album.

I own several Metallica CD's, and can't even name a Megadeth song. Metallica all the way for me.

well i guess since dave mustaine wrote a good portion of the first two metallica records i have to give it to him as a single musician, and song wrighter. Plus anyone who sings through his teeth is freekin bad ass. After what m-tallica pulled on us with the last 17+ years of crap I have no faith even working with rick ruben they will ever put out anything i would buy or steal for that mater. I do consider the first 4 metallica albums landmark ,timeless, and historic pieces of art that hold up as well today as they did in the 80s. I hate to say it but metallica died with cliff. He was powerful enough to carry over to Justice and still make it a good record. Mustaine is a great guitar player (highly under rated) imho, and always put together great bands around him. I guess since i can still listen to some megadeth, in the long run megadeth wins............... LISTEN TO MASTODON!!!!!!

Eh, I like em both, but they did kinda die out a while back. Metallica is very overrated skill-wise in my opinion, take a look at some guitar tabs and you'll see what I mean. ;)

Megadeth all the way!!! Metallica is just too boring for me now. I've been in love with Megadeth for almost 4 years and just cant seem to stop listening to there albums. By the way, anyone who hasnt checked out United Abominations (there newest album) really should. In my opinion, its one of there best, if not the best, and is way better than anything Metallica good ever right. especially nowadays. Dave rules!

The new album is really good. I've always wondered if Dave would have released the first Megadeth album with the tunes from Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning, who would be the bigger band?

cum on metallica is so challegend they couldn't come up with new album titles and had to use the title juvinle as it was reloaded. So straved for attetion and pennies they had to fight napstar. A good album or two in a style of music that's main claim to fame is how loud and or fast you can play your guitar give me a break still think it's funny they lost the first hard rock music award.

Yup. Mustaine and Burton (RIP) were the only musicians in Metallica...

Dave gave Metallica that great thrash sound they had on the early albums, while Cliff was truly the best (and worst) thing that ever happened to them.

Cliff in Megadeth... NOW that would have been metal.

The only thing Metallica had going for them at all (after Cliff and Dave) was Hetfield's voice (which was best on ...and justice for all and master of puppets), and even that sucks now too.

So I would say Metallica's first four albums > Megadeth > everything else > sucktallica (their name after ...and justice for all)

    I heard about that Daniel...

Anyway both of these bands are pretty much before my time seeing as I was raised on Country music, so they're not really my thing, but I do appreciate what they and other groundbreaking bands have done to change the world of music.

What's sad is how bad Slayer has become ever since Kerry has been the main write for the band now. It's always been about Jeff IMO. And when it comes to great playing I still think Forbidden (old school bay area thrash) blows 'Tallica out of the water.

I've never heard a more incorrect statement. The overwhelming majority of songs were written by Ulrich and Hetfield. Metallica wouldn't even exist without Hetfield's voice.

What? Mustaine didn't even play for any of the albums. He co-wrote 6 total songs, most of which appeared on Kill'em All. There's no question he had some influence, but the Metallica sound was all Ulrich and Hetfield :).

Totally agree... I think had that been a possibility Megadeth may have gotten bigger than Metallica.

I agree again... thrash metal singer that can't even scream. Of course, they haven't even been metal in years.

in my humble opinion, even though i am a metallica fan, they would have been nothing without dave mustaine. Metallica's first two albums (with mustaine) were their best, after that it was a slow and steady decline. im gonna have to give this one to megadeth for the simple fact that they have never abandoned their roots...their METAL roots!

Yet the 6 songs Mustains co-wrote are the best tracks. Including my personal fave "Ride The Lightning".

Well that's a matter of opinion, although I would agree Ride The Lightning is one of their best. But handing him the title of "making Metallica" is silly... to be honest, I think their best album was Master of Puppets. I also like Black, but I don't consider it thrash metal either :).

Megadeth all the way. Megadeth never cut their hair and went pop. And I am pretty disappointed in how they treated Dave Mustaine. I think that he has more metal in his pinkie than Metallica has in its whole band.

MOP was OK with about 4-5 songs I dug but Ride The Lightning was their best. Still a lot of Dave's fury but a tad more direction but not too much direction in the wrong way.

i use to like Metallica more then Megadeth but with they way they sue everyone and anyone for useing or even saying there name with out there permission just upsets me to no end. i mean when your at there level you should be honored when a high school group uses your name as a way to pay homage(SP) to you and your band and then the way they as a band did Megadeth was just wrong.

Musically, I like both. I love both! Overall Metallica has more good songs and albums. St. Anger is the only Metallica album to truly suck.

The first two or three Megadeth albums were just speed fests to show they could play fast. Rust in Peace was their first really good album and considered highly influencial. Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia were great albums too. Then it just went down hill. Megadeth is also an unstable band. It's just Dave and whoever he likes at the moment.

I hate Metallica's (read: Lars) attitude now. Load and Reload weren't bad. They were different. When the napster stuff happened I lost a lot of repect for them. Lars showed he was a tool. I was reakky pissed at them for forcing Jason to leave. That said, I have seen their recent shows on the net and they still know how to put on a show even though they are all old and ugly (except Kurt who somehow doesn't age).

I have huge repect for Dave though.

The first Metallica album was a speed fest. Megadeth's "Peace Sells" all though fast, had a lot of slow parts and lotsa songs started out with an accoustic. And the song "Peace Sells" at the time was lyrically far beyond ANY metal band was writing and showed you Dave had a brain. Both 'Tallica and Megdeth's 3rd albums were both fast and heavy. Also, Dave's writing was going beyond was most bands were doing. As for the 4th album's from both, Rust In Peace was way better.
My theory though on band's first album of the 90's goes as follows: It was their last great album or their first bad album. The Black Album and Countdown to me werent that great from either band. Load and Reload were just terrible! As for Dave changing musicians, yeah, he did but so did Chuck Schuldiner from Death and Chuck was a leader in the extreme music scene and was and still is highly respected!
