Baby Ball Pythons - Het For Spider - Only $89.99
Yep. That's what the sign on the tank said at Slither and Swim petstore in West Haven CT today.
I stopped in after work to get a few feeders and they had a green sign on the BP tank that said "Special - baby ball pythons $89.99 - het for spider".
I pointed out to the people there that spiders are dominant and there is no normal looking ball that could be a het for the trait. I explained they were misrepresented and the sign needs to be taken off the tank or changed to get rid of the het for spider part.
They told me they ARE het for spider and gave me a disgusted look. I said they are NOT het for spider since there is NO SUCH THING. I was then told that they bought them as het for spider and that is what they are going to sell them for. They are not changing the sign. :D
What a rip off.
They are totally misrepresenting these snakes and this is not the first time. Last year I pointed out that their $399.99 baby albino burms were not labyrinth albino burms like they had them advertised as.
I am so ticked right now. They jacked up the price (the "regular ones" are $49.99) by claiming they are something they are not. Someone who doesn't know any better is going to end up buying these thinking they are hets.

Have a little chat with your Better Business Bureau. Selling a normal snake that cannot be possibly het for a trait like spider just so you can jack up the price is fraud and misrepresentation. They likely were taken advantage of by a supplier but that's their problem, they shouldn't be passing on that mistake to unsuspecting customers and especially not when they've been notified of their mistake.

BBB or report it to whoever you can up there, it is basically fraud. It sounds like they know they are not het for spider to me... it's people like this that make the whole ball game (so to speak) so frustrating!

False advertising is illegal in all 50 states...take them to court...they should probably be shut down anyway

Re: Baby Ball Pythons - Het For Spider - Only $89.99
The buyers should research better before they buy too. The whole "buyer Beware" routine.
That said... it's FRAUD. If they sold a necklace as 18karat gold and it was base metal with glitter on it they'd be JUST as liable.
I'd believe that they think YOU are wrong, since the supplier probaly told them they were het for spider, and they'll believe the "bigger" guy(supplier wise). Just to give them benefit of a doubt.
Still doesn't mean it's not FRAUD. Illegil. No good. I'd call up the police department and ask them what you could do about it, other than calling the BBB.
(I actually was thinking.. why would HE try to say there's "het for spider"? He's always so sensable!!.. when I saw the title of the thread! Sorry! I should have known better!)

I think they know they are not het and it's the ol, "someone else sold them to us as this so we are going sell to the public as that" excuse... passing the buck!

I bought some Vision cages off a guy once and he was trying to tell me his BP's were het for pastel. He seemed pretty freaky so i didn't even say anything. I think he was trying to impress me. Some people are just ignorant, they probably believe they are right. Instead of researching and learning they assume knowledge, happens all the time. How often do newbies come on this site and give info they want to be true but have nothing to back it up. Some think just because they work in a pet store or because they own a snake they are automatic experts. The world is full of them. Life is a big lesson only many people skip class and purchase a cap and gown. I love to learn new info from those who know more than me and in return share it with those who know less.

Do you have the store manager's name and the store phone number? I have some double het reduced pattern high-gold morphs for sale at a nice wholesale price if they buy in 100 lots. I'd gladly give you a finders fee! :D

Ohh.. and I almost forgot.. one has a rat bite scar that makes it "pied-like" but I'd let it go for a grand or two.

The theory some say is spider to spider makes an animal that will throw all or a higher % of spiders when bred to normals, but I don't think that is proven or accepted yet. I still say they are dominant until the big dogs prove otherwise. :colbert:

Re: Baby Ball Pythons - Het For Spider - Only $89.99
A lot of you mentioned calling the local BBB or police.......I like the calling the BBB" idea........still I wonder what are the chances of the BBB even listening when you start rattling off genetic terminology regarding snakes? Most people are pretty ignorant of the basic facts of genetics and most people are prejudice against reptiles, so would the BBB even listen?
I thinking that the best you could expect is that the BBB would have a complaint on file about the pet store.....but I don't think they would do much about it other than put the file in their public records.

Re: Baby Ball Pythons - Het For Spider - Only $89.99
Other than the BBB, you could tell your local herp club. I'm sure they'd have resources and contacts to try to get the issue resolved.

Until it is proven that a spider bred to a normal will consistently produce all spider babies clutch after clutch OR a super spider visual form is produced, then they are not co-dominant.
As of now, they are a dominant morph only.
Only if they meet the above criteria would they be considered co-dominant.
You don't happen to work at Slither and Swim....................do you?:D

Only if a a visual super form is produced would they be considered co-dominant. An animal homozygous for the spider gene that looks like any other (het) spider would be classified as a dominant mutation. Complete dominance is by definition when the heterozygous genotype (Ss) looks the same as the homozygous dominant (SS) genotype.

Which, is unlikely to ever happen, given that no one has produced a homozygous Spider to this point. Given what you said, n morph that is homozygous fatal would be considered dominant, correct?

How would you tell if you have a homozygous spider? You would have to breed to spiders together and then breed all of the babies to normals and hope to get all spiders? That would take a ton of time...probably why it hasnt been done.

Ummm... huh :D? You breed a Spider to a normal. If it's homozygous, you'll produce ALL Spiders. If it's not, you'll end up with normals and Spiders. To date, no one has produced a known homozygous Spider.
