Wsidom Teeth
So I just got told Im gonna have to get all 4 wisdom teeth pulled. They arent even through the gum yet, so theylll preetty much dig in to my gums, then pull the teeth out! Ouch! Im so blown about this, Im not really scared, but doesnt this happen when your older, like 18? Im 14! Share any stories you may have about wisdom teeth pulling, might as well hear all the things that can go wrong or how bad it will hurt :taz:

Re: Wsidom Teeth
Sometimes they go ahead and remove the wisdom teeth before they've grown in and become a problem for your other teeth...
They aren't fun to get removed, I'll tell you that. When I had mine removed, my cheeks swelled up and were bruised for a little over a week. :O
Anyway, good luck! :)

Re: Wsidom Teeth
I only had 3! But I just had them removed a week ago. Trust me get them pulled before they grow out, they can be the cause of damage in more areas than your mouth. And then just eat lots of ice cream :)

Re: Wsidom Teeth
I had that done a few months ago. If they are still in the gums they will surgically remove them. You will be put completely under. It wasn't that bad. I was down and out for a day. Just have to be careful wit the foods you eat for a while and definetly follow their care instructions. If you don't flush the sockets and pack them properly you could get dry socket.
I did get sick from the pain killers they gave me so I quit taking them. The only thing I took the whole time was ibuprofen 600 mg. I felt only slight discomfort.
You'll be fine.

Re: Wsidom Teeth
not bad at all...they put me on the nitrous and the next thing I knew, i was at home waking up with a nice big bottle of pain pills at my side....never hurt a bit :D

Re: Wisdom Teeth
Everyone told me the process was really easy and painless... psssh! Liars! Lol... I don't know if I had a bad experience or what, but I had to have the exact same thing done: they actually put me out for the process.
I don't remember falling asleep, but I woke up sobbing. Don't know why, but I cried the whole way home. Cried for another hour, then went back to sleep. That may have been the drugs wearing off... but I didn't eat for the rest of the week because I hurt so bad.
The nastiest part, to me, was anytime I DID eat anything, I had to clean out the little pits in my gum by shooting water into them. UGH! It HURT! And it was a nuisance and gross! Lol... Get them all done and overwith, cause I'd not want to go through that again.
EDIT: And now I feel like a wuss, ya'll. :P

Re: Wsidom Teeth
I hope they knock me out, lol. Jeez, seems like its just a crap shoot on either painless or painful! :colbert: dont like that...

Re: Wsidom Teeth
A couple years ago I had all four on my wisdom teeth removed and a cyst removed (got hit with a soccer ball pretty hard to the face). I was very nervous about the whole thing, when I went in I sat in the chair, the doc came in and gave me an IV, next thing I know Im waking up. The first day I was fine but the second day there was some pain, but not much.
-
Re: Wsidom Teeth
Well, I had all four removed at 19...had to be surgical, they were impacted.
Definitely the sooner the better, if they are a problem. The longer you wait the more the roots dig in.
Mine was -not- that bad...I was knocked completely out, and next thing I remember I was drooling chocolate ice cream down my chin. The most painful part was my temporo-mandibular joint...I guess they had to really pry my mouth open, because it hurt to move my jaw for the next couple of weeks. The sockets themselves were sore but not unbearable...I ate soup for a few days and then soft food. Opening and closing my mouth hurt a lot more than the actual extraction sites.
I had no complications, and the bottle of pain pills they sent home went unused.

WOW, I wish mine would have gone so ood. I got mine pulled about 12 years ago in Boot Camp. I was face first in the dirt doing push-ups about 4 hours after getting them pulled.

I heard you "Devil Dogs" had your pain receptors removed when you did your first MEPS call. :D
You know: no pain receptors and a permanent implant that was a sand flea replant :D:D:D:D

Re: Wsidom Teeth
Lynne, that sounds very much like a reaction to the sedative used on you. My older sister is much like that whenever she's knocked out, wakes up sobbing like a baby. I unfortunately always wake up from a general, fighting and kicking (I'm never a popular patient...thank goodness I've rarely had surgery LOL).
Hon, I'm sorry you have to deal with this at 14 but best they come out before they become impacted. I needed mine out by 18 and kept putting it off until they erupted my gums and wedged up against my molars. I got awful infections and it was just dumb to keep putting it off like that. I finally had them out under a general in the hospital.
I won't lie to you, it's not fun, it's a hassle and can be painful but it's a necessary procedure. Plan a diet afterwards of soft foods, nothing hot nor cold, basically lukewarm. Follow all directions given to you for after care to the letter. If you have any known drug reactions to painkillers or anyone in your family does, let your doctor know before the procedure. If you find yourself reacting to the pain meds afterwards, immediately let the doctor know so your script can be adjusted.
Afterwards rest, take your meds and let your mom and dad spoil you rotten for awhile. No strenuous activities especially any that lower your head below your heart. I didn't listen to that one and popped the stitches in my lower gums...not fun....learned my lesson about listening to ALL aftercare instructions.

Re: Wsidom Teeth
Ouch, I think its gonna be wierd to have stiches in my mouth    Thanks Franky! I hate when people sugar coat things. They say, it wont hurt then youre crying, Id rather know what is coming and man up and take it!

Re: Wsidom Teeth
Well I've always felt personally, or with my own kids, it's best to be prepared and not be lied to when it comes to stuff. As well I think if you know why something must be done and that it might not be nice, but it will be over with and needs done...well you just can deal with it better. Fear and lack of knowledge seems to be only something that would make any experience all that much worse.
When Mikey had to get shots before kindergarten we just explained to him that it might pinch a bit but that the needle was putting invisible good soldiers into him to help fight off the invisible bad soliders that bring disease. He was the only kid at the clinic who was excited about getting his needle LOL.
You'll do fine and you won't have further problems down the road with these teeth. Now go make a list of all your favorite foods that aren't hard to eat and don't need to be hot or cold. Then make with the cute kid facing this bravely thing and your parents will be putty in your hands LOL.

Re: Wsidom Teeth
ohh, wow, i remember those days.
I am in the airforce, and in order to deploy, we have to remove the wisdom teeth. Lucky me, when i got to my dentist, they told me i had five wisdom teath(who ever said milk was good for you?). But to tell you the truth, the whole process was painless and i kinda liked the feeling the nitrous gave me :rolleye2: .
even better, do you know the green bag looking hair cover nurses wear? well i got to keep one of them :D

Re: Wsidom Teeth
This EXACT same thing happened to me when I was 14, they weren't even through the gums, but I still got all 4 out. I just wanted to say, it really was the funnest week ever. The operation was painless and my recovery was quick and all I got to do for a week was sit at home watching movies and eating pudding, it was just awesome.

Re: Wsidom Teeth
LOL guys. And I get to miss football practice

Re: Wsidom Teeth
I just had mine taken out this spring. Same deal all 4. Better to have them out before they cause issues or pain. I waited and waited to the point where I could feel them pushing against my other teeth. I was sorta nervous as I've never had surgery or even broken a bone in my life! They put me out and I don't remember much about that day and a little about the next LOL.

Re: Wsidom Teeth
Oh I see you already got the "tug at the parent's heartstrings" act down VERY well LOL.
Just as well you are 14. The younger you are the less you have a tendency to bleed, you tend to clot faster and heal much faster than us "oldsters" so that works to your advantage. Besides which....it's worth it for all that pudding! :D
Puddin for breakfast...
Puddin for lunch....
Puddin for dinner....
And lots of Verners gingerale. My American husband long ago informed me that apparently one cannot possibly come back from any illness without the guzzling of huge quantities of cold Verners!
-
Re: Wsidom Teeth
I don't know how people can drink that Verners...my dad loves it and just the fizzle...from smelling it the first time (ya I know that's weird) made me gag! Something about it is just not right LOL!
-
Re: Wsidom Teeth
I'm with you there Heath! I can't stand the smell or taste of Verners! What a way to ruin a good glass of icey gingerale!
-
Re: Wsidom Teeth
I hate that stuff!!!! I like Canada Dry or any normal ginger ale...

Re: Wsidom Teeth
I had to have a molar pulled, almost the same thing...And they said it wouldn't hurt, because I was getting a sedative(sp), but boy were they wrong...I couldn't feel most of the pain, but the pulling and preasure on your other teeth killed me. Ask for gas!! When I had surgurey for a tooth that wouldn't come in, that was under the one that they pulled, they used gas, and like Nate said, laying at home, with Vicoden and a chocolate frosty from Wendys.
Good luck!

When I had mine done (all four at once and none erupted through the gum yet), I had an IV in and they put me under general anesthesia (they put me to sleep). So, I basically blacked out in the chair and woke up all woozy with a mouth full of gauze and the inside of my mouth tasting like rancid meat.
They gave me some Vicoden and I basically slept for a few days. The first day, you CANNOT spit or rinse your mouth really--and that was awful. The wounds ooze blood and you have to change the gauze, but the blood sitting in your mouth combined with no teeth brushing gives you rancid meat-breath and it tastes terrible. I couldn't spit but had to often hang over the sink with my mouth open and let the spit/blood ooze out of my mouth--charming, right? After that, it wasn't too bad--just a little tender inside the mouth.
One thing, though--my JAW was very tight-feeling and sore for a couple of WEEKS (yes, weeks) after the surgery. I never fully appreciated how many little intricate muscle systems work to move a jaw until I could FEEL every single one of them working :) So, chewing might be a bit awkward for a few days or a few weeks. I survived, though.
As a note, I was about 18 when I had it done. 14 does seem a little young, but if your dentist/dental surgeon thinks that you should, then you probably should.
