    Emergency Help Needed!!!!!!
4 weeks ago I lost one of my largest bp's and couldnt find him. Well today I found him the hard way. I turned on my oven and heard a sizzling sound I shut it off right away and opened the bottom drawer and my bp came crawling out. he is pretty badly burned on his stomach not through or charred just really red. His cloacla (sp) is sticking out and burned and his right side of his head is kind of bad not really burned. What should I do? I think euthanizing him is best but whats the best way without taking him to the vet? the nearest herp vet is 5 hours away. I need some advice asap. thanks.

Holy :cens0r: that is terrible!!! I am ssooooo sorry for the snake and you...

The best advice I can give is iodine/betadine and then neosporin, although someone here might have a better solution for burns.

The members here told me that ball pythons can heal from amazing things - and I have seen it here on the site and myself with one of my own snakes that got mauled by a rat. Pictures might help to determine it, but don't euthanize him yet! Hang in there, and hopefully you will get some more helpful responses soon

Killing that animal is a last resort!!!!!!

Get it to a vet NOW!!!

Your vet can be the judge of that. It might pull through :D

Snakes are fradgile and hearty at the same time. You'd be shocked what good treatment and a couple of sheds will do.Best of luck.

Just a though make sure the vet treats Herps. Most everyday vets don't.

    Best of luck.

make an appointment for as early as possible tomorrow. it's not like you could get to denver tonight before the vets there close anyhow unless it's an emergency clinic.

Did you tell them it's an emergency? If so it's kinda crappy that they said to wait 'til tomorrow...

Exactly... no sense in making that drive unless absolutely necessary. I still say call back and make sure they can't squeeze you in for an emergency though.

Good, I'm very glad to see that. I think a responsible vet should always look at emergency cases, even if it means they're a few minutes late for their round of golf...

This is really good news...as a matter of learning and future reference you might consider taking pictures. This way you can monitor the healing process and see how quickly he recoops from these injuries. It will also serve as a strong reminder to make sure he cannot get out again.

Should you choose to post those pictures it could help others as well :)

yeah the vet was cool about it it was the receptionist that gave me the problem. I am hoping that he pulls through he is pretty alert but he cant move his back side at all but his is moving his head around a little.

He got out while he was under my sisters care I was on vacation. I will try to get some pics. all I have is my camera phone.

    Re: Emergency Help Needed!!!!!!
I hope the snake pulls through. This is a really good lesson folks about advocating for care. I know as a pet owner and as a mother of four, you can't let receptionist, nurses or techs stand between you and the care those that depend on you need in an emergency situation. Do as this person did and insist on speaking to the vet/doctor and if you aren't allowed to, simply show up. It's amazing how fast an appointment suddenly opens up when a determined parent or pet owner is standing there with a sick kid or a dying animal and saying "I simply won't leave until someone helps me". Doesn't mean you have to be nasty, cuss or be rude...just be determined and firm in that you need emergency help and you need it right now (and don't forget a very big thank you afterwards). :)

he is still doing ok so far. still moving around as much as he is able to. I provided water for him. one of his eyes is sunk into his head and he still flicks his tongue but he cant close his mouth. he does have one bleeding wound. I am going to head to the vet in about 5 min. see if he cant do anything sooner.

    Re: Emergency Help Needed!!!!!!
Any vet that is open should see emergencies; that's just part of the job. We'll work in non-emergency walk-ins too, if the folks don't mind waiting until we've seen any conflicting pre-scheduled appointments.

For something like that, I would personally beat any receptionist at our clinic who turned away that kind of case if we had the ability to provide care. No animal should ever go overnight in that much pain if there is help to be had.

Next time, just haul your butt down there...they can't turn away a critical case that's sitting in their lobby.

    Re: Emergency Help Needed!!!!!!
Good news and Bad news. He gave him some kind of meds for the pain. He has a 45% chance of living and like 2 or 3% chance of fully recovering. He covered him in some cream for burns and said his one eye is gone.He has a lot of burned off skin still on him but the doc said to give it time and it will fall off. the burns basicly cooked him around his tail area he said. and around his mouth he said doesnt look good. he said it might heal but it still might be tough for him to eat. he told me he might not make it overnight but if he does he will most likely survive. the best part of all he only charged $40 for everything and told me he wanted to see him in a week.

I got up this morning and he was even worse he would only move his head for me and so I took him back to the vets office and the vet took a look and said he has to much nerve damage and he would have to be put down :( :crying: . so I figure it was best for the snake and I both so the deed was done :crying: . He was the first animal I have ever had to put down. I will get some pics of what he looked like. I will be picking him up in an hour cause I didnt want to sit around waiting and keeping him on my mind. He will get a proper burial instead of being trashed or whatever vet offices do to them. what a day. :(

That's so sad.. I'm sorry for your loss.

Word to the wise moving forward: if you're missing a reptile, check your stove before turning it on! Especially if you have a gas stove, which has a pilot light providing a constant source of heat...

That was the thing it was a gas stove and I checked it the day before because I found some shed under my kitchen sink. I stuck my hand everywere it could fit in stove and used a flash light and everything. I checked it yesterday before I even turned it on and didnt find him.

Thanks for the help you guys have provided and everything. It wont stop me though from keeping snakes or reptiles in general. It was a very hard lesson learned though, and I hope nobody else has to go through what I have gone through.

You also have an option of having him cremated and his ashes put in a wooden bos it will cost around $100 though.

I am so sorry for your loss. Unfortunatly part of having animals is having to say good bye sometimes. It is always more traumatic when it is a horrible accident like what you have experienced. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May the pain pass quickly and happier days follow soon. poor fellow was probably looking for a warm hiding spot. You did the right thing and I commend you for your efforts!

I'm so sorry to read about TC but I think you did right by him. You got him to a vet as fast as possible, gave him a chance but in the end made the most humane and giving decision to end his suffering. Thank you for sharing this information, you may well have helped to save another snake from this sad fate.

If you'd like to share some pictures of him during happier times, I know we'd all love to see them.
