MAn vs wild tv show.
:O he just bit the head off a snake then ate its squirming body poor little thing.
It looked like either a garter snake or a baby king snake. poor little thing. :(

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
On the latest episode (this past Friday) he was in Australia and caught a large Olive Python. He carried it (alive) with him, over a river, till he was ready to eat it. Then he swung it around in the air and smacked it on a rock. Next shot him cooking and eating it.
I felt terrible for the snake but love the show.

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
While I can understand the concern, especially on a herp loving forum like this - let's not forget that these examples are not senseless killings, but rather killings for survival. The whole premise of the show is how to survive if you were to find yourself stranded in such a place.

Just to clarify I am not concerned...I love the show. It reminds me of the show "Fear Factor" where they ate disgusting stuff...now my whole family waits till Friday nights to watch this new season to see what he will eat next.
He drinks his own urine on this past Friday's show as well. :O

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
I am not a fan of the show... he is far too callous about killing animals on that show.
If you like that type of show try watching survivorman. He doesnt have the luxury of having camera men, so I think it is better anyway. They just drop him off in the middle of no where by himself with some camera gear and give him a week to find civilization. When he kills an animal he always makes a speech about how he doesnt like to take an animals life but in a situation like this you might need to...
I understand the need to eat obviously, but survivorman just seems to be a lot more respectful about it. He also kills them more humanely then man vs wild...

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
I take it this is Bear Grylls we are talking about. If so, whenever it was aired over here in the UK it was titled Born Survivor. Look out for the episode when he's stranded in the African savannah. He makes a tasty meal out of a freshly killed and devoured Zebra carcass and gets a tasty refreshing drink from some elephant dung. Excellent television but hopefully i never find myself in such dire straits

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
I love the show also I love both survivor man and man vs wild. And i am not too concerned about the killing of the snake It was just a sort of shock.

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
I actually don't read it as being callous about it, just very matter of fact. Let's be honest if you were out in the middle of nowhere trying to survive, I really doubt you'd be making pretty speaches over your "dinner". I sure know I'd be a lot more concerned with getting needed protein and calories (though having to eat slugs...I'd probably expire first LOL).

I think the last thing i would be worrying about when stranded in some of the most inhospitable and unforgiving places in the world is how humanely i can kill an animal which is ultimately only a food item at that time. It's more a case of, find prey kill by whatever means necessary and get it down your neck.
I haven't seen survivorman but i don't understand why he has to make a speech about how to humanely kill an animal and the reasons why he's doing it. When faced with life or death situations your brain converts back to its most primitive form and thats basic survival skills. The last thing you want to start doing is trying to reason with yourself for killing some animal that is basically going to help you survive a little bit longer

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
i agree with you Jo if you out there and need something to eat you will anything you can find and your not going to worry about the way you kill it you just want to eat and live.

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
To be both fair and clear though, I do believe when it comes to things like sport hunting than one must be above and beyond everything, humane and respectful of the natural world in how one kills. This, however, isn't survival hunting. I've lived in some pretty remote places...in the far north of Ontario where the roads end and in the Canadian Yukon. Had I ever been lost in those places, sorry but I'd have done whatever it took to get back out in one piece and worried about my moral character at a later date. :)

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
Do you see the everglades episode? He caught a gator, and said: These are protected....too bad, because he sure looks tasty. I lmao'd

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
I don't really like watching him eat that kind of stuff...but I can kinda understand. I did see one episode (I don't know which one...I started in the middle of it) where he found a rattle snake and was going to catch it and eat it. But after he followed it and looked at it, he told what kind of rattlesnake it was, and said that it was protected. He did the same kinda thing... "He would be good food, but I guess I'll go hungery tonight" Of course, when you look at the killing of the animals in a life or death situation, even if the animal is protected, it's going to get eaten if that's all that's around. I guess with him being on TV, he can't just kill protected species for the show. It's a good show, but I don't watch it very often b/c I'm not real comfortable watching him killing those animals.

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
Everytime it comes on I watch it!
I have learned alot from it in case I am ever dropped off in the middle of a desert, or marshlands or well...anywhere!
However, I would prolly die of hunger cause I can not see myself eating any of the things he has ate!
bugs, worms, snakes...don't seem like they would be very tastey!

I totally agree. I havent seen any of the episodes from season #2 yet, but I loved season 1. In season 1 in the deserted island episode, he saw a green sea turtle and mentioned that he would only kill it if he truly was starving since the species is endangered. He never kills endangered species on the show.

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
I love Man vs. Wild, I watched a few episodes of survivorman and could never get into it, it could be because the host is for sure hotter on Man vs. Wild :X I just never liked the guy on survivorman for some reason :(
Caught an episode of Man vs. Wild a while back and have been hooked ever since...

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
Ive talked to quite a few people on hiking/backpacking forums and almost everyone says the stuff he does on Man vs Wild will actually kill you if you try this if your actually lost. Wish they would bring Survivorman back.:)

How is the host still alive? I've yet to see him do anything that would cause death if done correctly.

mmhmm I mean he has the advantage because he knows he's going to be facing hell, so trains for some part of what's to come atleast and I would hope anyone that gets lost in the conditions he does is also fit and has studied up on the location and survival tips like he does with each location, I just love how he lives like the people who have survived on the land in that location (native americans etc.) it's always interesting to see the diffrent ways each group of people live/lived off the land. And I love how he tells stories of those who have attempted to do what he is (jumping from a cliff etc. etc.) in the same area and what they did that almost killed them or did infact kill them, there isnt one epidsode that I dont watch that I dont learn something interesting that I hope I'll never have to use of course.
And yeah he has a camera crew, but they cant have anything to do with him so I dont know how that makes the other show better because he mans his own camera, I did feel bad for the other host (survivorman) when he would have to treck up to set the cam up and then walk all the way back, I think Man vs. Wild is atleast more realistic in that sense, being if you were lost and burning cals in 130 degrees the last thing you would be thinking about is walking a mile to set up a camera.
God I felt bad for him when he was in Australia and it was 130 degrees with 100% humidty, what hell that had to be hu?

Hes got Military training plus (IMHO) a camera crew there just encase anything happens. With the episode (dont remember which one) where he scales up the side of a cliff. Only one wrong step will send you falling, with the everglades episode, when he uses the parachute wire to climb down the cliff, again only one wrong move will kill you. To me its unnecessary to do those types of things, to each his own I guess.

I agree. I'm not a big fan of Bear as I think he panders more to the ratings and sensationalism of the show than actual survival. I am an avid backpacker, and a lot of the stuff he does in his show is just plain stupid and will get you killed. For example, I remember one show in which he floated down a river in the Sierras for quite a while to save a little bit of time hiking. You would have a much greater risk of dying from hypothermia or hitting a rock or getting stuck in a hole than you would benefit by saving a an hour or two hiking. It turns out later that he wore a life jacket that they didn't reveal to the viewers, and even then I would still call it a stupid move especially to show the public as an accepted survival technique.
Oh, and don't get me started about when he wasted several hours trying to tame and mount a wild horse on that same episode.
That's just a couple of examples, but there are similar events in every episode.
Bear does provide some decent information, but as far as a true survival show Les from Survivorman has much more valuable information for the everyday person that might find themselves stuck in a survival situation.

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
Both of the snake killings made me sad, but hell, I woulda done it if I absolutely had to. :O

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
I love Man vs Wild.
Edit: I agree with some aspects of it. But the majority of the :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r: he does on the show I wouldn't attempt in my wildest dreams. Like when he climbs down mountain faces.................lol. Hey if I had the opportunity to get a ride on a horse then I would go for it. If you can do that then that could save your life. It'd be like driving a car...goin 35 mph all the way, lol.
I do like the way he's active in finding things and food to eat. He doesn't really waste too much time. He always refers to real life situations that have actually happened and I think thats good too. I like Les Stroud too. His is more realistic in the things that normal people could actually do. Bear was in the military and has climbed to the summit of Everest and things like that and is a pro at survival.

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
I was under the impression that this show is now cancelled because it was not real.
Anyone seen the one where he's trying to capture the "wild" horse? How many wild horses are shoed?

Re: MAn vs wild tv show.
My whole family loves that show. My kids sometimes have a difficult time when they see him killing and eating snakes or scorpions because they feel sorry for them (because we keep both as "pets") but they also know that, that is not something to do just for the heck of it. They know that the only time that is necessary is if you *don't* have any other food.
